Wasim Akram questions ‘game awareness’ of Pakistan batters against India

NEW YORK: Legendary pacer Wasim Akram expressed his disappointment over Pakistan’s performance during the blockbuster ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash against arch-rivals India on Sunday.

Set to chase 120 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan only managed 113 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

This was Pakistan’s second loss in the tournament as they previously lost to co-hosts United States of America (USA) in the Super Over.

Akram, while speaking to an Indian channel, did not mince his words in criticising the national team’s performance.

“Pakistani players think that if they don’t perform well, the coaches will be sacked, and nothing will happen to them. It is time to keep the coaches and change the entire team,” Akram said.

Wasim Akram also questioned the game awareness of experienced batters Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman.

“Iftikhar Ahmed knows only one shot on the leg side. He has been a part of the team for years but doesn’t know how to bat. I can’t go and tell Fakhar Zaman about the game awareness,” he said.

“They have been playing cricket for 10 years, and I can’t teach them. Rizwan has no game awareness. He should have known that Bumrah was given the ball to take wickets and that the wise thing would have been to play his deliveries cautiously. But Rizwan went for a big shot and lost his wicket,” he added.

Pakistan had a cautious start to the pursuit as their decorated opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan added 26 runs to the total before the former fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah in the fifth over after scoring 13.

Rizwan then put together an important partnership with Usman Khan as the duo added 31 runs to the total, taking Pakistan’s total to 57 at the halfway mark.

After Usman’s dismissal, Rizwan was involved in yet another crucial partnership for Pakistan when he put together 26 runs for the third wicket with Fakhar Zaman.

However, both batters perished in quick succession as Pakistan slipped to 80/4 in 14.1 overs. The back-to-back dismissal halted the flow of runs for the Green Shirts and the new pair of Imad Wasim and Iftikhar Ahmed found it tough to score freely.

Iftikhar perished on the last delivery of the penultimate over after scoring a nine-ball five while Imad followed on the next delivery, walking back after a scratchy 15 which came off 23 deliveries.

Naseem Shah tried to pull off the impossible for Pakistan with his 10-run cameo but Arshdeep Singh held his nerves under immense pressure to steer India to a hard-fought victory.

Pakistan will play their next match against Canada on June 11.

Sandeep Lamichhane to join Nepal T20 World Cup squad in West Indies

Sandeep Lamichhane will join Nepal’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad in the West Indies after missing matches in the United States because his visa was denied, the cricket association said Monday.

Nepal had originally wanted to select former skipper Lamichhane, but his US visa was denied twice despite intense lobbying.

“Nepali player Sandeep Lamichhane will leave for the West Indies for the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup and join the Nepali national cricket team,” association secretary Paras Khadka said in a statement.

“I am now joining the national team for the last two matches in the West Indies and looking forward to fulfilling my dreams and the dream of all cricket lovers,” Lamichhane posted on social media.

“To all our cricket fans and people back home everywhere who prayed for me, I will forever be grateful for your blessings.”

His social media posts with the announcement were welcomed by fans and filled with congratulatory messages.

Nepal lost to the Netherlands by six wickets in their World Cup opener.

They will play Sri Lanka on Wednesday in Florida before group matches in the West Indies against South Africa and Bangladesh.

Cricket does not enjoy the same attention in Nepal as it does elsewhere in South Asia.

But the sport has been growing in popularity, with Nepal given ODI status by the world governing body the ICC in 2018.

Lamichhane was a major part of the rise as the most sought-after Nepali cricketer in lucrative T20 leagues around the world.

The bowler’s big break came when he was snapped up for the Indian Premier League, the world’s richest cricket tournament, in 2018.

India come from behind to down Pakistan in blockbuster clash

NEW YORK: Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack decimated Pakistan’s batting unit and powered India to a narrow six-run victory in the blockbuster ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash here at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Set to chase 120, Pakistan only managed 113 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

But Usman (13) was trapped lbw by Axar Patel on the first delivery of the 11th over as India forced a comeback.

Rizwan was then involved in yet another crucial partnership for Pakistan when he put together 26 runs for the third wicket with Fakhar Zaman.

The duo of Fakhar and Rizwan, however, failed to continue and perished in quick succession as Pakistan slipped to 80/4 in 14.1 overs.

Tailender tried to pull off the impossible for Pakistan with his 10-run cameo but Arshdeep Singh held his nerves under immense pressure to steer India to a hard-fought victory.

Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for India for his 3/14 in four overs, followed by Hardik Pandya, who took two wickets.

Patel and Singh, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Sent into bat first, India’s strong unit unfolded on a paltry 119 in 19 overs despite Rishabh Pant’s 42-run knock.

India had a decent start to their innings when Rohit Sharma scored eight off Shaheen Shah Afridi’s first over but the returning rain halted their momentum.

Fortunately for cricket fans, it was a passing shower and the action resumed after a brief delay and Naseem Shah bowled from Pakistan from the other end.

The right-arm pacer brought major breakthrough for the Green Shirts as he dismissed Virat Kohli (4) with just 12 runs on the board.

Shaheen doubled the delight for Pakistan in the next over when he avenged Sharma for a first-over six by dismissing him on a similar stroke. Sharma made 12 off 13 deliveries.

Returning wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant then took the reigns of India’s batting charge. He put together a crucial partnership with Axar Patel to anchor the innings.

Pant and Patel added 39 runs for the third wicket before Patel was cleaned up by Naseem in the eighth over.

Rishabh Pant then put together a one-sided partnership with Suryakumar Yadav.

The fourth-wicket stand, which yielded 31 runs, lasted with Yadav’s dismissal in the 12th over. The top-ranked T20I batter could score seven off eight.

Yadav’s dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse as India lost three more wickets in quick succession including their mainstay Pant, who fell prey to Mohammad Amir in the 15th over.

Pant remained the top-scorer for India with 42 off 31 deliveries, laced up with six boundaries.

Pakistan pacers, fuelled with momentum, soon rattled India’s toothless batting tail and booked them on a below-par total.

Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf picked up three wickets each for Pakistan, followed by Mohammad Amir, who bagged two, while Shaheen Shah Afridi chipped in with a wicket.

India are placed second in Group A standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with two points after one match. Whereas, Pakistan are fourth with zero points.

Aakash Chopra warns India of ‘wounded’ Pakistan threat

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has warned India ahead of their blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan and India will lock horns for the eighth time in a T20 World Cup when they square off at the newly-built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9.

The two teams boast contrasting momentums in the ongoing tournament as India eased past Ireland by eight wickets in the campaign opener while Pakistan succumbed to a humiliating defeat against the USA.

However, Aakash Chopra believes that Pakistan is an unpredictable team and is more dangerous when wounded.

“There will be pressure (on both teams). Pakistan are generally a dangerous side when they’re wounded, and that’s exactly how they’re right now after losing to the USA. If they lose to India, their campaign will be as good as over. You’ve got to be really careful,” Chopra told IANS.

The player-turned-commentator also acknowledged the importance of the toss, considering the pitch conditions in New York.

“The toss will be very crucial on this (New York) surface, but I still feel that India should start as favourites because our team is a lot better than theirs,” Chopra added.

For the unversed, out of seven matches played thus far between the arch-rivals, India emerged victorious six times while Pakistan tasted triumph only once.

T20 World Cup 2024: Chris Gayle predicts winner of Pakistan-India clash

Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle has predicted the winner of the much-anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India, scheduled on June 9.

Gayle handpicked India to win the match against Pakistan, considering the recent form of both teams. However, he also stated that anything can happen in a high-octane clash.

“India are in the driver’s seat, definitely a more relaxed seat. But this is India vs Pakistan at a World Cup, so you can take nothing for granted,” Chris Gayle told ICC.

“Their (Pakistan) backs are up against the wall and coming off a loss like that straight into playing a team like India, who traditionally have the upper hand in these games, is a huge challenge.”

The two-time T20 World Cup winner also expressed shock over USA’s upset victory over the Green Shirts.

“Like the rest of the cricketing world, I was gripped by the USA’s victory over Pakistan. It is a huge result which is not only incredible for them but massive for cricket as a whole.

“You always expect a few upsets at World Cups and having started well by beating Canada, USA put Pakistan under the pump for pretty much the whole game. I think it marks the day the World Cup really started.”
