Persistent rain washes out Sri Lanka-Nepal T20 World Cup 2024 clash

LAUDERHILL: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash between Sri Lanka and Nepal has been abandoned due to persistent rain here on Tuesday.

According to the details, it has been raining in Lauderhill, Florida since the morning and continued during the scheduled match timings, resulting in it being abandoned without a ball bowled.

Consequently, both teams earned their first point in the tournament after they lost their previous matches.

Nepal succumbed to a six-wicket defeat against the Netherlands in their first game in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Nepal bowlers forced the Netherlands to make hard yards with a tight bowling display to chase a modest 107-run total, however, the Dutch batters held on to their nerves to chase the target with just eight balls to spare.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka had a dismal start to their World Cup campaign as they were bowled out for a meagre 77 against South Africa after opting to bat first. South Africa chased the target with 22 balls to spare after losing four wickets.

In their second match, Sri Lanka set Bangladesh to chase 125, which was successfully chased by the latter with an over to spare after a thrilling match.

Pakistan edge past Canada to stay alive in T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK: A combined bowling attack, followed by Mohammad Rizwan’s half-century propelled Pakistan to a must-win victory over Canada in the 22nd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Tuesday.

Set to chase 107, Pakistan amassed the total for the loss of three wickets and 15 balls to spare, courtesy of an anchoring second-wicket partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Pakistan’s new opening pair of Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan failed to give them a decent start as the left-handed batter perished in the fifth over with just 20 runs on the board.

Ayub scored a scratchy six off 12 deliveries.

Babar then joined Rizwan in the middle and the duo anchored the run chase with a gutsy partnership.

They added 63 runs for the second wicket before Babar fell prey to Dilon Heyliger in the 15th over.

He scored a run-a-ball 33 with the help of one four and a six.

Rizwan partnered briefly with Fakhar Zaman, who scored just four and perished on the second delivery of the 18th over with just three more required.

Usman Khan then hit the winning runs for Pakistan when he guided one towards the midwicket region for a couple.

Mohammad Rizwan remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with an unbeaten 53 off as many deliveries, hitting three boundaries and a six.

Dilon Heyliger led the bowling charge for Canada with 2/18 while Jeremy Gordon made one scalp.

Sent into bat first, Canada only managed to register 106/7 on the board despite Aaron Johnson’s half-century.

Canada had a briefly flying start to their innings as Johnson smashed Shaheen Afridi for back-to-back fours to kick of the proceedings.

However, the associate nation could not carry on the momentum and lost two wickets in quick succession to slip to 29/1 in 5.1 overs.

Canada kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Aaron Johnson stood his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking singlehandedly.

The right-handed opener soon brought up his fighting half-century in a dominant fashion when he smacked Imad Wasim for a six over long-off in the 13th over.

Johnson, however, perished in the next over as he was cleaned up by Naseem Shah’s searing delivery.

Aaron Johnson remained the top-scorer for Canada with a 44-ball 52 which featured four fours and as many sixes.

Canadian captain Saad Bin Zafar then put together a scratchy seventh-wicket partnership with Kaleem Sana before falling victim to Mohammad Amir in the 17th over. He scored 10 off 21 deliveries.

Sana and Dilon Heyliger batted cautiously at the backend and added 19 runs amid their unbeaten eighth-wicket partnership to take Canada past the 100-run mark.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Amir and Haris Rauf bagged two wickets each while Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah contributed with a wicket apiece.

The seven-wicket victory propelled Pakistan to third in Group A standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with two points in three matches while Canada slipped to fourth due to an inferior net run rate.

READ: “Won’t be easy for Pakistan to beat Canada,” says Aakash Chopra

“Won’t be easy for Pakistan to beat Canada,” says Aakash Chopra

Former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator Aakash Chopra asserted that it would be tough for Pakistan to beat Canada as the two teams are set to lock horns in an important ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash asserted that Canada possess a quality fast bowling attack which can make things difficult for under pressure Pakistan.

“You might be thinking about Pakistan’s qualification chances. They are not too far behind in net run rate and since these games are being played on such grounds, no team will be able to catch up,” stated Chopra.

“It’s difficult to beat Canada because they beat Ireland on the same ground. They have decent fast bowling and you also get a left-arm spinner in Saad Bin Zafar,” he added.

The former cricketer further revealed that he met numerous Pakistan cricket fans following their national team’s narrow defeat against India and they shared that they have been “humiliated”.

Aakash Chopra also questioned the selection process of the Pakistan cricket team.

“Pakistan’s chances are not yet over although whichever people I met, in Manhattan and at the ground, everyone said they had been humiliated. The situation is very bad and the fans’ anger is legit. More than the players, you should be angry with the way Pakistan cricket runs, that which people you select,” said Chopra.

“If you felt that after selecting this team, especially this batting, you are making a world-beating team, it’s T20, things can and might change, but it doesn’t look like that after seeing the team. The batting does not have the might at all, how do you do that? That’s Pakistan cricket for you,” he concluded.

For the unversed, Pakistan had a disastrous start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as the former champions succumbed to an upset loss against the USA in the campaign opener before falling to a six-run defeat against arch-rivals India in a blockbuster clash on Sunday.

The back-to-back defeats put Pakistan on the verge of an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 and they now need to beat Canada to stay alive.

On the contrary, Canada, third in Group A standings of the T20 World Cup 2024, have two points after two matches as they recovered from a thumping defeat against the United States of America (USA) in the curtain raiser to register a shocking win over Ireland.

Canada’s captain Saad Bin Zafar is determined to put struggling Pakistan under pressure in their upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash, scheduled at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York today.

Meanwhile, Canada’s captain Saad Bin Zafar shared that the players are in good mood following his team’s historic victory over Ireland.

“Everybody’s in a positive mood. Our last game went really well,” said Saad as quoted by The Canadian Press. “It instilled a belief in us that if we play good cricket on the day, we can take down any opponent.”

Saad acknowledged Pakistan as an experienced but highlighted the team’s recent shortcomings. He further shared his plans to put the Green Shirts under pressure as “anything is possible”.

“I know that we are coming up against quite a high-ranked and well-experienced team in Pakistan but the reality is lately they haven’t been playing the good brand of cricket that they’re known for,” stated Saad.

“They are under the pump. They have lost two games. So, if we’re able to play good cricket on the day and we’re able to put some good pressure early on in the game, anything is possible,” he concluded.

Matthew Wade reprimanded for argument with umpire during England clash

Australia’s wicketkeeper batter Matthew Wade has escaped a fine for his heated argument with the on-field umpire during the match against England, however, the International Cricket Council (ICC) handed him an official reprimand on Monday.

Wade was reprimanded over the Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct in the 18th over of Australia’s innings.

The left-handed batter played a delivery from Adil Rashid back to the bowler, expecting the umpire to call it a ‘dead ball.’ However, the umpire did not make the call upon which Wade got furious and argued with umpire Nitin Menon over the decision.

“The wicket-keeper batter was found in breach of Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match,” ICC said in a press release.

“In addition, one demerit point has been added to Wade’s disciplinary record. It was his first offence in a 24-month period.

“On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Joel Wilson, along with third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madangopal levelled the charge.

“There was no need of a formal hearing as Wade admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Wade carried his bat all the way through and returned unbeaten on 17 off 10 deliveries to help Australia post 201-7.

In response, England could only manage 165/6 in the allotted 20 overs despite a strong start.

Klaasen, Maharaj help South Africa edge past Bangladesh in a thriller

NEW YORK: Heinrich Klaasen’s 46-run knock, followed by Keshav Maharaj’s last-over heroice helped South Africa register a narrow four-run victory over Bangladesh in a thrilling ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash here on Monday.

With this victory, South Africa booked their place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, having six points from three games.

Chasing a modest target of 114, Bangladesh managed only 109 courtesy of Maharaj’s double-wicket last over.

Bangladesh lost the opening batter Tanzid Hasan in the second over with nine runs on the board.

Najmul Hossain Shanto then added 20 runs from 25 balls with Litton Das (9) for the second wicket before Maharaj struck to remove the latter.

Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje dismissed Shakib Al Hasan (3) and Shanto in consecutive overs to reduce Bangladesh to 50-4 in 9.5 overs. Shanto scored a scratchy 23-ball 14.

Towhid Hridoy and Mahmdullah then attempted to bring Bangladesh back into the match with a 44-run partnership from 45 balls.

With 20 required off 18 balls, Bangladesh looked like favourites to win the game, however, South African bowlers pulled things to clinch a thrilling victory.

Kagiso Rabada dismissed Hridoy on the first ball of the 18th over and gave away only two runs in the over, leaving Bangladesh to chase 18 off 12.

Hridoy top-scored for Bangladesh with a 37-run knock from 34 balls, laced with two boundaries and two sixes.

Ottneil Baartman gave seven runs in the penultimate over and left 11 runs to defend in the last over.

Maharaj brilliantly defended the target, giving away only six runs and taking two wickets to steer his side to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

The left-arm spinner topped the bowling chart for South Africa with figures of 3-27, while Rabada and Nortje claimed two wickets.

South Africa opted to bat first, however, the decision backfired as Bangladesh reduced the batting side to 23-4 in the fifth over, with pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib taking three early wickets.

Klaasen and David Miller (29) then joined hands to help South Africa recover with a 79-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Klaasen played a gritty knock of 46 runs from 44 balls with the help of three sixes and two boundaries before Taskin Ahmed castled him in the 18th over.

Except for Klaasen, Miller, and Quinton de Kock (18), no other batter managed to reach double figures as South Africa set Bangladesh to chase 114.

Sakib led the bowling charts for Bangladesh with figures of 3-18, while Ahmed took two wickets.

Shahid Afridi expresses disappointment after Pakistan’s defeat against India

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has reacted over the Green Shirts’ disappointing loss against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in New York.

The former all-rounder took to his YouTube channel and criticised Pakistan’s batting performance as they failed to chase a meagre 120-run target.

“We [Pakistan] just needed to score 120 runs [to win] on the pitch where India was 35-40 runs short [in the first innings] but with the disciplined bowling of their bowlers, we failed to score even 120 runs. It was a game of 120 runs on 120 balls,” Afridi said.

“We always blame the bowlers for not restricting teams on small totals because that is how our mindset has been set that we just don’t want to score runs.

“We failed to score such a total with such a strong batting line-up. I have no words. All I have is disappointment.”

Set to chase 120 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan only managed 113 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Pakistan had a cautious start to the pursuit as their decorated opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan added 26 runs to the total before the former fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah in the fifth over after scoring 13.

Rizwan then put together an important partnership with Usman Khan as the duo added 31 runs to the total, taking Pakistan’s total to 57 at the halfway mark.

After Usman’s dismissal, Rizwan was involved in yet another crucial partnership for Pakistan when he put together 26 runs for the third wicket with Fakhar Zaman.

However, both batters perished in quick succession as Pakistan slipped to 80/4 in 14.1 overs. The back-to-back dismissal halted the flow of runs for the Green Shirts and the new pair of Imad Wasim and Iftikhar Ahmed found it tough to score freely.

Iftikhar perished on the last delivery of the penultimate over after scoring a nine-ball five while Imad followed on the next delivery, walking back after a scratchy 15 which came off 23 deliveries.

Naseem Shah tried to pull off the impossible for Pakistan with his 10-run cameo but Arshdeep Singh held his nerves under immense pressure to steer India to a hard-fought victory.

This was Pakistan’s second loss in the tournament as they previously lost to co-hosts United States of America (USA) in the Super Over.
