Babar Azam returns to Pakistan from USA

Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam returned to Pakistan earlier this morning after a disastrous ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the United States of America (USA).

He reached Lahore from New York after a brief layover in Dubai.

The star batter did not return to the country with the team after getting knocked out from the mega-event in order to spend time with his family in the USA.

He is expected to meet the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi and discuss the reasons for the team’s dismal performance in the tournament.

It is worth mentioning here that Babar Azam has been under hot water following the national men’s team’s early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan had a disastrous start to their campaign as they suffered a shock loss against the co-host United States of America (USA) after a Super Over.

The 2009 champions then succumbed to a gut-wrenching defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India at a jam-packed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9.

The back-to-back defeats put Pakistan on the verge of an early exit and despite their victories over Canada and Ireland, they failed to reach the Super Eights stage.

The right-handed batter, who holds the record for most sixes in T20I cricket, extended his lead and became the first batter to cross the 200-sixes landmark.

He now leads the list with 203 sixes, followed by New Zealand’s Martin Guptill with 173 sixes.

Under Sharma’s leadership, India qualified for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Australia by 24 runs.

Chasing a daunting 206-run total, Australia could accumulate 181/7 in their quota of 20 overs despite Travis Head’s half-century. Head remained the top-scorer for Australia with 76 off 43 deliveries, hitting nine fours and four sixes.

Afghanistan edge past Bangladesh to qualify for semi-final as Australia crash out

KINGSTOWN: Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq picked four wickets each to steer Afghanistan to a narrow win over Bangladesh and qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals here at Arnos Vale Ground on Monday.

Defending a modest 115-run total in a rain-hit clash, Afghanistan bundled Bangladesh for 105 in 17.5 overs, despite Litton Das’ unbeaten half-century.

Bangladesh needed to chase the target in 12.1 overs to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Otherwise, Australia would have qualified if Bangladesh failed to chase within the specified overs.

Das gave Bangladesh a good start as he struck 13 runs off Naveen-ul-Haq in the first over, however, the bowler made a brilliant comeback in the next over, picking two wickets in two balls.

Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Tanzid Hasan (0) in the second over before Naveen-ul-Haq removed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (5) and Shakib Al Hasan on consecutive deliveries.

With Bangladesh reeling at 31-3 in 3.2 overs, rain halted the play for 20 minutes.

After the rain break, Das and Soumya Sarkar (10) attempted to force Bangladesh’s comeback with a 25-run partnership but Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan rained on their parade as he got rid of Sarkar.

Towhid Hridoy struck 14 off 9 with two boundaries off Mohammad Nabi before he also fell prey to Rashid Khan.

Das waged a lone battle as no Bangladesh batter could pose much threat to Afghanistan.

Rashid Khan removed Mahmdullah (6) and Rishad Hossain (0) before a brief rain interruption, resulting in the target being reduced to 114 in 19 overs according to the Duckworth Lewis Stern method (DLS).

Das completed his half-century in 41 balls with a four off Noor Ahmed, however, wickets kept tumbling from the other end and ultimately Bangladesh bundled for 105 with Naveen-ul-Haq getting the last wickets on back-to-back deliveries.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan returned with bowling figures of 4-26 and 4-23 respectively. Meanwhile, Farooqi and Naib bagged one wicket each.

Afghanistan opted to bat first but could not get the desired start against Bangladesh’s economical bowling.

The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran remained silent in the first 10 overs as they managed to score 58 runs with two fours and one six only.

However, the building pressure prompted Zadran to go for a big shot against Rishad Hossain only to be caught by Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

The right-handed batter scored a scratchy 18 off 29 with one boundary.

With no boundaries after the 7th over, Gurbaz finally hit two fours against Hossain in the 14th to break free, but he fell to the same bowler on the first ball of his next over.

Gurbaz top-scored with a cautious 43-run knock from 55 balls with three boundaries and one six. Gulbadin Naib also fell in the same over courtesy of a brilliant catch by Soumya Sarkar.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan then played a 10-ball cameo to score 19 runs with the help of three sixes, including two in the last over to help his team finish at 115-5 in 20 overs.

Hossain returned with bowling figures of 3-26, while Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed managed one wicket each.

Virat Kohli bags unwanted T20 World Cup record with duck against Australia

Star India batter Virat Kohli’s poor form continued as he was dismissed for a duck during their Super 8 fixture against Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Monday.

After being put to bat first, Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma opened the inning for India, however, their partnership was a very short one as the right-handed batter was dismissed in the second over of the inning.

Virat Kohli attempted a pull shot on the fourth delivery of Jos Hazlewood’s second over, but mistimed the shot. Tim David took a brilliant catch running backwards and ended the batter’s stay at the crease with a five-ball duck.

Earlier, he failed to open his account against the United States of America (USA) when he fell to Saurabh Netravalkar during their group stage game.

With this duck, Kohli has now been dismissed twice in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 without disturbing the scorecard.

He is the second Indian player to have been dismissed on a duck twice in a World Cup edition.

The first Indian player was former pacer Ashish Nehra who scored two ducks in the 2010 T20 World Cup.

Kohli has had a forgettable tournament as he has scored just 66 runs in six innings with an average of just 11.

While Virat Kohli was quick to return to the pavilion during their game against Australia, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma launched a counterattack and hit Australia’s bowlers all around the park.

He smashed 92 runs off 41 balls with the help of eight sixes and seven fours as India registered a massive total of 205/5 against Australia.

India edge past Australia to book T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final spot

GROS ISLET: Rohit Sharma’s swashbuckling 92, followed by a combined bowling effort led India to beat Australia and qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals here at Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Chasing a daunting 206-run total, Australia could accumulate 181/7 in their quota of 20 overs despite Travis Head’s half-century.

Australia had a shaky start to the pursuit as they lost David Warner (6) in the first over with just six runs on the board.

Following the early hiccup, Mitchell Marsh joined forces with Travis Head and the duo launched a counterattack.

They raised 81 runs in just 41 deliveries before Marsh fell victim to Kuldeep Yadav as Axar Patel took a blinder just inside the square leg boundary.

Marsh made important contribution for Australia with a 28-ball 37 which included three fours and two sixes.

Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell then put together a quick partnership for the third wicket, adding 41 runs to the total until Kuldeep castled the latter on the first delivery of the 14th over.

Maxwell made 20 in 12 balls, laced up with two fours and a six.

Australia then lost another wicket, exactly an over later, when Marcus Stoinis (2) fell prey to Axar Patel while attempting to play a reverse sweep.

The 2021 champions suffered a massive setback to their run-chase when their mainstay Head was outclassed by Jasprit Bumrah’s slower delivery in the 17th over with 56 still required.

Head remained the top-scorer for Australia with 76 off 43 deliveries, hitting nine fours and four sixes.

His dismissal halted the flow of runs for Australia and they lost two more wickets in the next over, allowing India to seize control.

Australia eventually succumbed to a 24-run defeat which dented their semi-final hopes.

Arshdeep Singh led the bowling charge for India with three wickets, followed by Kuldeep with two while Bumrah and Axar chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Put into bat first, India registered 205/5 on the board, courtesy of Rohit Sharma’s baton charge.

Rohit, unfazed by his opening partner Virat Kohi’s early demise, dominated the Australian bowlers from the word go.

India had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost Virat Kohli (0) in the second over with just six runs on the board.

Meanwhile, Rohit, unfazed by his opening partner’s dismissal, denied Australia to attain momentum and smashed Mitchell Starc for 29 runs in the third over.

He continued to dominate the Australian bowlers in a one-sided second-wicket partnership with Rishabh Pant (15), which yielded 87 runs off just 38 deliveries.

Rohit was then involved in yet another notable partnership for India when he added 45 runs for the third wicket with Suryakumar Yadav before Starc finally got rid of him in the 12th over to provide Australia a much-needed breakthrough.

He remained the top-scorer for India with a 41-ball 92, peppered with seven fours and eight sixes.

Yadav and Shivam Dube then knitted a brisk 32-run partnership to keep India on the track.

The top-ranked T20I batter walked back in the 15th over after scoring a blistering 31 off 16 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.

Dube was then joined by Hardik Pandya in the middle and together they raised 35 runs for the fifth wicket until the former perished in the penultimate over after scoring 28 off 22.

Pandya bolstered India’s total in the death overs against Australia with 27 not out. His 17-ball cameo featured one four and two sixes.

Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc bagged two wickets each for Australia while Josh Hazlewood picked one.

The 24-run victory propelled India into the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals as they topped Group 1 of the Super Eights stage with six points in three matches while Australia remained second with two points in as many matches.

Usman Khawaja comments on Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan captain

Australia’s left-handed opener Usman Khawaja shared his opinion on Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan’s white-ball captain after the former champions’ dismal run at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Khawaja, while addressing the media, at an event in Melbourne on Monday, threw his weight behind Babar to continue leading the Green Shirts in white-ball cricket.

“It’s Babar Azam’s decision to captain, if he can, he should,” stated Usman Khawaja.

The Pakistan-born Australian cricketer also pointed out the lack of stability in Pakistan Cricket, stating such uncertainty makes it difficult for the players to perform.

“When I look from the outside, changes are constant in the Pakistan cricket. Selection committee, staff and players keep changing,” said Khawaja.

“Such a situation is difficult because stability is very important. When there is no stability, it is difficult for players to perform. Pakistan cricket team never sees stability,” he added.

Michael Vaughan labels Afghanistan ‘second best Asian team’

Former England captain and renowned commentator Michael Vaughan made a massive claim as he called Afghanistan the second-best Asian team following the side’s astonishing victory over Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Vaughan lauded the Afghanistan cricket team, stating that it has extremely skilful players, who were led brilliantly by star spinner Rashid Khan.

“Great win for Afghanistan .. they have a genuine chance now of reaching the final. They will fancy beating any of the teams in the other group in Trinidad with their bowling attack,” wrote Vaughan.

“It’s no surprise anymore that Afghanistan produce performances like we have just witnessed .. Extremely skillful set of players & brilliantly led by [Rashid Khan],” he added.

Michael Vaughan then acknowledged a user’s remarks, who said Afghanistan is the second-best team in Asia, but the former cricketer specified the claim to white-ball cricket.

Afghanistan, on Saturday, created history, when they registered a comfortable 21-run victory over one of the most dominant forces in the world, Australia.

The victory also revived Afghanistan’s chances to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 as they now need to win their last Super Eights fixture against Bangladesh and hope India beat Australia.

Put into bat first, Afghanistan registered a formidable total of 148/6 in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of a solid start provided by the openers.

Both Afghan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran scored half-centuries while the rest made modest contributions.

In response, Australia were bundled out on a paltry 127 and thus succumbed to a gut-wrenching defeat.

Glenn Maxwell waged a lone battle for the 2021 champions with a gutsy half-century but his efforts were not enough to steer his side to victory.

Rain likely to play spoilsport in crucial India-Australia Super Eights fixture

SAINT LUCIA: The crucial ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eights clash between India and Australia, scheduled here at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, is likely to be affected by rain.

According to AccuWeather, there is a high probability of rain during the match hours.

The high-stakes match between India and Australia will commence at 10:30 AM (local time). Meanwhile, there is as high as a 51 per cent chance of rain during the scheduled time of the match.

For the unversed, if the rain washes out the entirety of the match, India will qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 as both teams will share a point apiece.

The abandonment will consolidate India’s command at the summit of Group 1 with five points in three matches while Australia would remain second with three points.

Australia will then be dependent on the result of the last Group 1 fixture between Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

If Bangladesh beat Afghanistan, Australia would go through but if Afghanistan manage to win then it would mark the end of Australia’s campaign in the ongoing global event as they would go past Australia in the standings.

After the shock loss against Afghanistan, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh termed their match against India a “must-win game” and asserted that the pressure would bring the best out of his players.

“First things first, (we have to) recover. We have a lot of belief in our group. We are a very good cricket team. Yes, tonight we had an off night but I guess there’s also a positive in the fact that in 36 hours we go again. It’s a big game, it will be against India obviously and it’s a must-win game,” stated Marsh during the post-match press conference.

“I think if you look back at the short history of this team, I know for a fact that it brings out the best in our guys, so the boys will certainly be up and about for it.

“We’ve got a good bunch of people and I believe our best is up there with the best. So, we need to bring that on whatever day it is, in a couple of days’ time and move forward pretty quickly.”
