Babar Azam goes extra mile to reclaim his form ahead of semi-final

SYDNEY: Pakistan captain Babar Azam participated in the optional training session ahead of his team’s scheduled semi-final clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against New Zealand.

According to the details, the rest of the national team preferred to rest before the all-important semi-final against New Zealand, scheduled for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Babar, who is going through a rough patch, practised alone in the nets to regain his form.

The right-handed batter trained for a gruelling one and a half hours, while team mentor Matthew Hayden accompanied him.

It is pertinent to mention that Babar could manage to score 39 runs in five innings at a dismal average of 7.8 and a strike rate of 48.03.

Pakistan to face New Zealand in semi-final as India thrash Zimbabwe

MELBOURNE: Indian opener KL Rahul and top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav powered their side to a massive 186/5 before bowlers displayed a combined effort to decimate the Zimbabwean batting order and handed their side a comprehensive 71-run victory in the last Super 12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Following India’s triumph over Zimbabwe, Pakistan will now face New Zealand in the first semi-final on Wednesday, while India will take on England in the second semi-final on Thursday.

Set to chase 187, the Zimbabwean batting lineup failed completely and could amass 115 runs before being bundled out in the 18th over.

Experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl put up a brief fight with their valiant knocks of 34 and 35 respectively, while the rest of the Zimbabwean batters had no answers to the Indian bowling attack.

Skipper Craig Ervine could accumulate 13 runs, while the rest of the Zimbabwean batters failed to amass the double figures.

Ravichandran Ashwin led the bowling attack for India with 3/22, while Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami bagged two wickets each.

Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

After opting to bat first, India succeeded in posting a mammoth 186/5 in their last Super 12s fixture at the back of Rahul and Kumar’s fifties.

The men in blue had a rather unwanted start to their innings as they lost their captain Rohit Sharma (15) cheaply for a mere 27 runs in the fourth over.

India’s top batter Virat Kohli then anchored the innings alongside Rahul and carried the total to 87 in the 12th over before the former perished after scoring 26 off 25.

Following Kohli’s dismissal, Rahul too, could not hold on for long and fell briefly after amassing his half-century. He scored 51 off 35 with the help of three boundaries and as many sixes.

Replacing Dinesh Karthik in the Playing XI, Rishabh Pant, failed to make an impact with the bat against Zimbabwe and could score a mere three runs in five balls before walking back to the dugout in the 14th over.

Following Pant’s departure, Kumar and Hardik Pandya took the charge and took Zimbabwean bowlers to cleaners as they added 65 runs in just 35 balls to power India to a massive total.

Kumar was the main aggressor of the vital fifth wicket stand, while Pandya, who was rotating the strike fell in the final over after scoring a run-a-ball 18.

The top-ranked batter Kumar top scored for India with a blistering 61 off 25 balls, laced with six boundaries and four sixes.

For Zimbabwe, Sean Williams bagged two wickets for just nine runs, while Sikandar Raza, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava struck out a batter each.

Kohli accused of ‘fake fielding’ during Bangladesh-India T20 WC match

ADELAIDE: Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan has claimed that the on-field umpires had missed an incident of “fake fielding” from Indian player Virat Kohli, which could have resulted in five potentially crucial penalty runs for the Bengal Tigers.

The claim came after Bangladesh were denied five crucial runs in a five-run loss to India on Wednesday night in an important encounter of the T20 World Cup at Adelaide, Oval.

The incident took place in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s chase when Litton Das was playing confidently. Virat Kohli could be seen pretending to field a throw from an outfielder while Bangladesh batters were running between wickets – an apparent attempt to deceive Das into thinking the ball wasn’t going to his end.

The act of Kohli went unnoticed in the field as the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Chris Brown didn’t take action, and the Bangladesh batters – Najmul Hossain Shanto was the other – didn’t point it out.

Nurul Hasan mentioned the incident while talking to reporters after the game.

Hasan claimed the umpires were informed about the incident, but no action was taken. With Bangladesh eventually losing by five runs, fans were left fuming that Kohli’s actions went unnoticed and five penalty runs weren’t awarded.

ICC’s rule

The ICC moved to outlaw ‘fake fielding’ some years ago, with a five-run penalty to be incurred by the fielding team.

ICC rules state: “It is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball.”

Virat Kohli becomes highest run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups

ADELAIDE: India’s veteran batter Virat Kohli has outrun Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-scorer in the history of ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

Jayawardene had occupied the record for almost eight years as the right-handed batter topped the chart in the 2014 edition with a total of 1016 runs.

Kohli, however, on Wednesday, broke the record amid his side’s fourth Super 12s fixture against Bangladesh. The right-handed batter amassed the milestone with an astounding batting average of 80 and a decent strike rate of 130.

In the seventh over of India’s innings against Bangladesh, Kohli flicked Taskin Ahmed at mid-wicket for a single, giving him the run that put him above Jayawardene.

Kohli just took 23 innings to become the highest run-scorer in the tournament history and has scored 12 half-centuries, while Jayawardene played 31 innings to set the record.

The Sri Lankan batter, however, faced fewer balls (754) than Kohli (773).

Kohli is currently unbeaten at 31 off 27 deliveries, with his side scoring 119/3 in 14 overs.

T20 WC: Netherlands dominate Zimbabwe to seal first Super 12s win

ADELAIDE: Dutch pacers wreaked havoc on the batting line before Max O’Dowd blasted a scintillating half-century, aiding the Netherlands to gain their first points in the Super 12s as they seal a comprehensive five-wicket win over Zimbabwe, here on Wednesday.

The Dutch side dominated the opponents throughout the game as the bowlers ran through the Zimbabwean batters to bundle them out for a meagre 117-run total despite a valiant resistance by Sikandar Raza in the middle.

The Netherlands chased down the target with two overs to spare on the back of a solid 73-run partnership for the second wicket between opener Dowd and Tom Cooper.

Dowd top-scored for the side with a cautious knock of 47-ball 52 laced with eight fours and a six while Cooper contributed 32 off 29.

The duo was sailing the Netherlands comfortably to the finishing line as they took the scoreboard to 90/1 before Luke Jongwe and Richard Ngarava struck two back-to-back wickets in the 13th and 14th overs, dismissing Cooper and no 4 batter Collin Ackermann, respectively.

The Netherlands, eventually, lost two more wickets, set batsman Dowd and skipper Scott Edwards, before Bas de Leede finished the proceedings on the final of the 18th over with a boundary.

Earlier, Zimbabwe had a dismal turn with the bat as Raza top-scored for the side with a defiant knock of 24-ball 40 amid complete batting chaos as nine of the Zimbabwean batters failed to make it into double figures.

Paul van Meekeren and Brandon Glover stormed through the top order as they stuck the batting side to 20/3 in the powerplay.

Following the early chaos, Raza joined no 3 batters, Sean Williams, for the only noteworthy partnership of the innings as they gathered 48 runs for the fourth wicket before the left-handed batter was dismissed by Meekeren in the 12th over.

Williams managed 28 off 23 laced with three fours before he departed which triggered another collapse within the Zimbabwe batting order as they lost the rest of the six wickets for the addition of mere 39 runs.

For the Netherlands, Meekeren was the pick of the bowlers as he returned excellent figures of 3/29 in his four overs quota, while Glover, Logan van Beek and Bas de Leede took two wickets apiece. Medium pacer Fred Klaassen also had a scalp to his credit.

WATCH: Gutted Shadab Khan cries after Zimbabwe upset Pakistan

PERTH: An emotional video of all-rounder Shadab Khan has been making rounds on social media platforms following Pakistan’s upset defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12s fixture on Thursday.

In the video, the Pakistan all-rounder can be seen down on his knees and crying at the upset defeat against Zimbabwe.

One of the team’s supporting staff can also be seen tapping on Shadab’s shoulder and consoling him.

Shadab played a crucial role for Pakistan to restrict Zimbabwe to a paltry total as he picked up three wickets and conceded only 23 runs.

The right-handed batter then came out to bat at number five when Pakistan were 36/3 in the eighth over and needed a further 95 runs in 74 balls.

He then stitched an important 52-run partnership with Iftikhar Ahmed before falling to Sikandar Raza in the 14th over, while attempting to hit back-to-back sixes.

His dismissal triggered a frustrating batting collapse and Pakistan, consequently, fell just one run short to endure an upset defeat in the ongoing mega event.
