South Africa hit by double injury blow ahead of third India ODI

South Africa faced a significant setback in their campaign in India as Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi were both ruled out of the decisive third ODI in Visakhapatnam on Saturday due to injuries.

Burger, who impressed earlier in the series, pulled up with a hamstring issue during the second ODI in Raipur and could not complete his spell.

De Zorzi, meanwhile, strained his right hamstring late in South Africa’s chase, retiring hurt on 17 after the 45th over.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that scans revealed injuries serious enough to sideline both players from the series finale.

Adding to their concerns, CSA further announced that de Zorzi will miss the upcoming five-match T20I series against India as well.

He will return home immediately, with no replacement named.

There was another setback for the visitors as young fast bowler Kwena Maphaka was withdrawn from the T20I squad after failing to progress as expected in the final stages of his rehabilitation from a left hamstring injury.

Lutho Sipamla has been drafted in as his replacement.

Despite the disruptions, South Africa will hope their reshuffled squad can regroup quickly as they head into a crucial phase of the tour.

Key South Africa batter ruled out of remaining England ODIs

South Africa opener Tony de Zorzi has been sidelined from the ongoing ODI series against England after picking up a left hamstring injury during the opening match in Leeds.

The 28-year-old sustained the injury while making a diving stop to deny Jos Buttler a boundary on Tuesday.

Though his effort saved runs, de Zorzi was left in visible discomfort and had to leave the field. Team management later confirmed he would only bat if required.

With South Africa chasing a modest 132-run target, the left-hander was not needed in their seven-wicket win.

He will now return home for scans to assess the severity of the injury.

Tony de Zorzi had come in place of Matthew Breetzke, who was sidelined with a hamstring issue of his own. However, Breetzke has since recovered and is expected to reclaim his spot.

South Africa have not named a replacement for de Zorzi, with the rest of the squad remaining unchanged.

The Proteas lead the three-match series 1-0 after their dominant display in the first ODI. The second match will be played at Lord’s on Thursday.

De Zorzi, Stubbs tons steer South Africa to 307-2 against Bangladesh

Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs put South Africa in command on 307-2 and left Bangladesh floundering after day one of the second and final Test in Chattogram on Tuesday.

Both men made their maiden hundreds in a second-wicket partnership of 201 after the visitors won the toss and chose to take first use of a good batting pitch as they eye a series sweep.

Tony de Zorzi was unbeaten at stumps on 141, with 10 fours and three sixes, and will resume alongside David Bedingham on 18.

Stubbs played a more conservative innings and hit the mark on his 194th ball by cutting Mominul Haque to the covers for a single.

Taijul Islam was the only bowler to make a dent, first in the morning session by removing Aiden Markram when the stand-in skipper went for a big shot and holed out to Mominul Haque at mid-on for 33.

He bowled Tristan Stubbs after tea for 106 when the batsman tried a back-foot punch to the leg side but missed the lowering delivery, which crashed into his stumps.

Bangladesh, desperate to take a wicket, have lost two of their three reviews for the innings.

They unsuccessfully appealed for lbw against De Zorzi off a delivery pitched outside leg and again for a caught behind when Stubbs tried to cut Taijul away but missed.

South Africa made two changes to the side that won in Mirpur as they look to seal the series.

In came Senuran Muthusamy, an all-rounder who can bowl left-arm spin, and fast bowler Dane Paterson in place of Matthew Breetzke and Dane Piedt.

Bangladesh made three changes, bringing in batsman Zakir Hasan, fast bowler Nahid Rana and wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam Ankon for a debut.

Jaker Ali, who made his debut in the first match, is out after suffering a concussion while Nayeem Hasan and wicketkeeper Litton Das were also omitted.

South Africa won the opening Test against Bangladesh inside four days with fast bowler Kagiso Rabada taking 6-46 in the second innings.

Bangladesh have played 24 Tests in Chattogram but won only two with seven drawn.
