USA’s Aaron Jones creates history during T20 World Cup win over Canada

DALLAS: USA batter Aaron Jones lit the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and achieved a unique feat with a fiery 94-run knock in the opening match against Canada, leading his side to a thumping victory here at Grand Prairie Stadium on Saturday.

During his unbeaten innings of 94 off 40, he smashed 10 sixes, becoming the only second batter to hit 10 or more sixes in a T20 World Cup match after West Indies legend Chris Gayle.

The West Indian struck ten sixes against South Africa during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

Meanwhile, Gayle also holds the record for most sixes in a T20 World Cup game as he struck 11 sixes in the 2016 edition against England.

USA’s Ali Khan sends warning after Bangladesh series win

HOUSTON: The United States of America (USA) pacer Ali Khan stated that his team will “eat whoever comes in their way” in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The USA shocked the world when they beat a balanced Bangladesh side in the first two T20Is of the ongoing three-match series a few days before the commencement of this year’s mega event.

Bangladesh needed 12 runs in the final over of the second T20I to keep the series alive but Ali Khan displayed nerves of steel and steered the hosts to a historic victory.

Speaking to the media after the victory, Ali stated that the team is hungry. He also termed the USA a balanced side, asserting it can make a difference at the T20 World Cup 2024.

“We are hungry, we’re just hungry. And we’re gonna try to eat whoever comes in our way. Especially, this is the time where we can make some changes and try to adjust what we can small little things,” Ali said after the match.

“But I think the team looks really balanced. All the guys are hungry, as I said, and we are really looking forward to the World Cup, and I’m sure USA will be there to do an upset.”

He dismissed the notion that the USA’s victory against Bangladesh was a fluke by reiterating their back-to-back victories over the Asian side.

“It’s massive because as I said, we need to put USA out there on the world cricket map, and this is a pure example. It’s not just that we earned it,” said Ali.

“Sometimes you get a win against a big side, they say, Oh, it’s a fluke. But beating them twice, back-to-back, winning the series, it’s not a fluke and that means we have talent, we have skills, and we have the ability if we have given the opportunities.”

For the unversed, co-host USA are placed in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 alongside Pakistan, India, Canada and Ireland.

Shakib Al Hasan terms USA series loss a ‘wake-up call’ for Bangladesh

HOUSTON: Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan opened up about the reasons for his side’s shocking series loss against the United States of America (USA) on Thursday.

The USA defeated Bangladesh in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Prairie View Cricket Complex to register their first T20I series win over a Test-playing nation.

Shakib Al Hasan, while talking to the media after the match, stated that the team could not get enough practice due to rain and limited facilities at the venue.

“If we take this as a preparation series for the World Cup, in that case, we should have a lot more batting and bowling sessions and there should have been more facilities that we didn’t get at all,” said the former captain.

“For one day there was rain and we could not do anything on that day, while there are four grounds but we could train on only three pitches which I don’t think is ideal. And I think these things could have been better.”

However, Shakib praised the USA team for their efforts and expressed disappointment over the crushing series loss.

“Certainly it is disappointing and we didn’t expect it but we must give credit to the US team for the way they have played,” he added.

The all-rounder admitted that the Bangladesh side did not play at their best and termed the series loss against the USA a wake-up call ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

“I think no one expected that we would lose two games. Any match you lose as a team is disappointing. But having said that we have to play the World Cup and this series might be a wake-up call for us as we haven’t played the way we want to play,” Shakib concluded.

Anderson, Singh star as USA stun Bangladesh in series opener

HOUSTON: Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh powered United States of America (USA) to hand Bangladesh a shocking five-wicket loss in the first of the three-match T20I series at Prairie View Cricket Complex on Tuesday.

This marked the inaugural international match between the two nations, serving as a crucial opportunity for them to gear up for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the USA and West Indies from June 1.

The hosts invited Bangladesh to bat first and restricted them to 153/6, thanks to Steven Taylor’s brilliant spell, during which he claimed two wickets for nine runs.

Bangladesh at one point were 68-4 in 11.2 overs, however, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah helped the team recover with a 67-run stand from 47 balls.

Hridoy top-scored with 58 off 47, featuring four boundaries and two sixes, while Mahmudullah scored 31 runs from 22 balls.

The USA team began their pursuit with a conservative approach, however, the bowlers from Bangladesh consistently applied pressure, causing the required run rate to rise. Consequently, the home team found themselves at 94-5 inside 15 overs.

With 60 required off 31, Anderson and Singh joined hands and snatched the game from the claws of Bangladesh.

Together they raised an unbeaten 62-run partnership from 28 balls and finished the game with three balls to spare.

Anderson scored 34 off 25 with two sixes, while Singh scored 33 from 13 balls, featuring three sixes and two fours.

“It’s a great feeling,” Singh said after the match.

“I was backing myself and the main aspect of the game was to stay in the game till the last. It came down to our best efforts in the last over and I think that was our plan,” he said.

“Definitely Corey [Anderson] brings a lot of experience. He himself played a lot of big tournaments, big games. He knows how to finish games and how to stay calm under pressure, finish till the last ball…we all look up to him,” he said.

The second T20I will be played at the same venue on May 23.

Bangladesh announce squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the squad in the mega-event while Taskin Ahmed will serve as his deputy.

Ahmed is currently sidelined due to a side strain he suffered during the recent series against Zimbabwe and will not be taking part in the three-match T20I series against the USA leading up to the T20 World Cup.

However, it is expected that he will recover in time for the tournament.

The Bangladesh squad also features veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is set to make his record-ninth appearance in the T20 World Cup.

He and India’s captain Rohit Sharma are the only two players to have participated in every T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition in 2007.

Meanwhile, pacer Mohammad Saifuddin was dropped and instead, young pacer Tanzim Hasan made the cut for the World Cup.

Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf of Bangladesh clarified that both players were assessed during the Zimbabwe series. Saifuddin failed to impress selectors due to a lack of yorkers in the death overs.

“We wanted to observe and analyse Saifuddin’s performance in the Zimbabwe series. But when we considered what the team needs at the moment, Tanzim was ahead of Saifuddin. It was a close call between the two,” Ashraf said.

“We saw Tanzim against Sri Lanka. His dedication and hunger kept him ahead. He is also a good fielder. We didn’t see enough yorkers in the death overs from Saifuddin.”

Bangladesh are placed in Group D of the T20 World Cup 2024 alongside Sri Lanka, South Africa, Netherlands and Nepal.

They will kick start their campaign on June 7 against Sri Lanka in Dallas.
