Farhan, bowlers power Pakistan to victory over Sri Lanka

DAMBULLA: Clinical bowling performance, backed by Sahibzada Farhan’s half-century, helped Pakistan down Sri Lanka by six wickets in the T20I series opener here at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The Green Shirts chased down a mere 128-run target on four wickets with 20 balls to spare.

Sahibzada Farhan’s and Saim Ayub’s brisk opening stand of 59 runs in 5.5 overs made the contest one sided affair.

The duo came with an aggressive approach, particularly Farhan, who accumulated 12 from Nuwan Thushara’s opening over.

The pair kept the charge, with Saim and Farhan taking down Maheesh Theekshana and Thushara with nine and 19 runs from the second and third over.

Saim was eventually bowled by Theekshana for 24 from 18, which included three fours and a six. Farhan remained firm, stitching a 35-run partnership with skipper Salman Ali Agha.

The scorecard read 94 in 10.2 overs when Agha was caught after making 16 from 11 deliveries.

Sri Lanka tried to hold things back, but it was too little too late as Farhan and Fakhar Zaman were removed in quick time.

Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with 51 from 36, striking two maximums and four boundaries, while Fakhar managed only five from 10 balls.

At 106-4 in 13.2 overs, Pakistan’s chase was steadied by an unbeaten 23-run partnership between Shadab Khan and Usman Khan, which saw the visitors reach the target comfortably.

Shadab scored 18 off 12 balls with the aid of three boundaries. Usman scored an unbeaten seven from 13 deliveries.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dhananjaya de Silva scalped one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Pacer Salman Mirza led the bowling attack, while spinners Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan provided strong support as Pakistan skittled Sri Lanka for a below-par 128 run total in 19.2 overs.

Pakistan pacers mounted pressure on the home side batters right from the onset as openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara were sent back in 3.2 overs.

Nissanka made 12, whereas Mishara could not open his account.

As a result, Sri Lanka were in early trouble with 15-2 with Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis at the crease.

The duo tried to stablize the innings with a brief 22-run stand before both getting dismissed in a span of two deliveries.

Returning Shadab Khan made an immediate impact with the ball, trapping Mendis lbw for 14 while De Silva was caught behind for 10.

With quick wickets, the Islanders were again in recovery mode as Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage tried to arrest the slide with a 34-run partnership.

The pair eventually eased their side’s trouble as the scorecard read 72-5 in 11.3 overs.

But it was Abrar Ahmed this time, who made the crucial breakthrough with Asalanka’s wicket. The former captain scored 18 off 15 balls with the aid of a single boundary.

Meanwhile, Liyanage held the innings with a string of partnerships down the order. He first stitched a 38-run partnership with Wanindu Hasaranga, which was followed by another 17-run stand with skipper Dasun Shanaka, briefly stabilizing their innings.

Hasaranga scored 18, whereas Shanaka could add only 12, leaving Liyanage to shoulder the responsibility as wickets continued to fall around him.

Abrar Ahmed eventually got the better of Janith Liyanage, who top-scored with 40 from 31 balls with the help of two fours and a six.

Sri Lanka’s innings then folded quickly, with the last three wickets falling in the space of one run as they were bundled out cheaply for 128.

For Pakistan, Salman Mirza and Abrar Ahmed shared six wickets between them. Returning Shadab Khan and Mohammad Wasim were equally supportive with two wickets to their names.

DAMBULLA: The stage is set for the first T20I of the three-match series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Wednesday at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium (RDICS), kicking off the cricketing year 2026.

Concerns had emerged over the Dambulla weather after persistent rain on Tuesday forced Pakistan to cancel their training session, casting doubts over whether showers could interfere with the series opener.

The stadium was fully covered as captains Salman Ali Agha and Dasun Shanaka unveiled the series trophy ahead of the match.

Weather forecasts, however, suggest a largely playable day in Dambulla.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 22°C, with a RealFeel of 21°C. Humidity is high at 73%, giving the air a slightly heavy feel, but no rain is expected.

Northeasterly winds at 13 km/h, gusting up to 32 km/h, could influence some bowling and fielding moments.

The remaining two T20Is of the series are scheduled at the same venue on January 9 and 11.

Historically, Pakistan leads the head-to-head record, having won 16 of 27 T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Mustafizur Rahman registers for PSL 11 after IPL snub

Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has signed up for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 following his release from the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The left-arm pacer’s registration was confirmed by the league through its official social media platforms, where a banner featuring Mustafizur was shared to welcome him to what the PSL termed the “new era” of the tournament.

“Batters better shake carefully… its going to Fizz in the #NewEra. Mustafizur Rahman joins HBL PSL 11!” the league captioned the post.

The post highlighted his vast international experience, which includes 15 Tests, 116 ODIs and 126 T20Is for Bangladesh.

Mustafizur’s move to the PSL comes in the backdrop of a turbulent few days for the bowler, who was recently released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2026 season.

The decision was reportedly taken on directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), sparking controversy in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) responded strongly to the development, with the country’s youth and sports adviser Asif Nazrul stating on Sunday that the board would seek an explanation over Mustafizur’s sudden exclusion from the IPL.

The issue has since escalated beyond cricket, with the BCB announcing that Bangladesh’s men’s team will not travel to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, citing security concerns.

Adding to the strained situation, Bangladesh’s government earlier this week announced a ban on the broadcast and coverage of the IPL within the country.

Steve Smith shatters multiple records with Sydney Ashes century

SYDNEY: Australia’s modern-day great Steve Smith produced another masterclass at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), breaking multiple records with an unbeaten century in the fifth Ashes Test against England.

Leading the side in Pat Cummins’ absence, Smith struck his first hundred of the series and remained unbeaten on 129 at stumps on day three, guiding Australia to 518 for 7 in reply to England’s 384.

The hosts ended the day with a commanding 134-run lead as Smith once again dictated terms in cricket’s oldest rivalry.

With this knock, Smith moved past England legend Jack Hobbs to become the second-highest run-scorer in Ashes history, taking his tally to 3682 runs, now trailing only Sir Don Bradman’s seemingly untouchable mark of 5028.

  • Alan Border (AUS) – 3222 runs in 42 matches

It also lifted him to second place on the list of most Ashes centuries, with 13 hundreds, again behind only Bradman, who scored 19.

The century was Smith’s 18th as captain, six of which have come against England, the most by any skipper against a single opponent.

Shaheen Afridi starts rehab at NCA ahead of T20 World Cup: reports

LAHORE: Ace pacer Shaheen Afridi has started his rehabilitation programme here at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after suffering a knee injury during the Big Bash League (BBL) 15.

Shaheen was ruled out of BBL 15 after a knee injury sustained on Saturday, 27 December, during Brisbane Heat’s clash against Adelaide Strikers.

The left-arm pacer limped off while pointing to his right knee during the 14th over.

Eventually, he was ruled out and thanked fans for supporting him through his short stint.

“I’m massively thankful to the Brisbane Heat team and fans for showering me with immense love and support,” he wrote on his X post.

“Due to an unexpected injury, I have been called back by the PCB and will have to take a rehab. Hopefully, I will be back in the fields soon. Meanwhile, I will be cheering for the amazing team.”

According to reports, Afridi’s rehabilitation programme will also include regular assessments to monitor his recovery and ensure he regains full fitness ahead of the mega event.

For those unaware, Shaheen, along with Babar Azam, was not included in the squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka due to their commitment to the BBL 15.

It is pertinent to mention that the severity of Shaheen’s injury could potentially hinder his participation in the T20 World Cup 2026, which will commence on 7 February.

Earlier today, Brisbane Heat announced pacer Zaman Khan as Shaheen’s replacement.

The 24-year-old right-arm pacer has received clearance from the BBL Technical Committee and is set to be available for the Heat’s fixture against Sydney Thunder at the Gabba on Saturday.

The match will see Zaman come up against his former franchise, having previously represented the Thunder during BBL 13.

Known for his distinctive slingy action and effectiveness at the death, Zaman featured in four matches for Sydney Thunder, claiming eight wickets at an impressive average of 16.38.

Brisbane Heat head coach Johan Botha expressed confidence that Zaman’s inclusion would add a cutting edge to the bowling unit as the tournament reaches a crucial phase.

“He’s a genuine wicket-taker up front, but he can also control an over with his variations and pace,” Botha said.

“He complements our attack nicely and gives us additional options in the key bowling periods. Zaman was a handful when he first came on the scene and has continued to evolve his game,” he concluded.

Travis Head hits back for Australia after England post 384

SYDNEY: An imperious Joe Root hit a magnificent 160 to drive England to 384 in the fifth and final Ashes Test on Monday before Travis Head let rip to haul Australia back into the contest with a quick unbeaten 91.

Root’s superb innings, his 41st ton to match Ricky Ponting, was only ended courtesy of a brilliant caught-and-bowled by Michael Neser, who finished with 4-60.

Australia were left to negotiate the final session of day two at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground, which they did for the loss of Jake Weatherald (21) and Marnus Labuschagne (48).

By stumps, the hosts had raced to 166-2 with nightwatchman Neser on one alongside Head.

Weatherald, who needed a big score to stave off the critics, again failed to live up to expectations since making his debut at the first Test in Perth.

He was dropped twice in the space of three balls, by Root and then Ben Duckett, before Ben Stokes trapped him lbw.

But Head, who, like Root, has slammed two centuries in the ongoing Ashes, was in the zone.

He clattered three boundaries off the second over from Matthew Potts, in the side for the injured Gus Atkinson, and there was no let-up, blitzing a quickfire 50 off 55 balls.

Labuschagne was also in good touch, stroking seven boundaries before thick-edging Stokes to Jacob Bethell at gully.

Australia lead the series 3-1 and have already retained the Ashes, with England desperate for another win after victory at the previous Test in Melbourne.

England resumed at 211-3 but lost Harry Brook (84), Stokes (0) and Jamie Smith (46) before lunch.

Will Jacks (27), Brydon Carse (1) and Josh Tongue (0), along with Root, departed in the second session.

The day belonged to Root, who started on 72 and reached an almost chanceless century off 146 balls to reaffirm his status as an all-time great.

The 35-year-old had begun the series under pressure after failing to make a hundred in Australia over three previous Ashes tours.

He snapped the drought with an unbeaten 138 in the day-night Test at Brisbane, and his exploits in Sydney drew him level third with Australia’s Ponting on the all-time century-makers’ list, with 41.

Only India’s Sachin Tendulkar (51) and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (45) have scored more Test centuries.

Root and Brook came together with England in trouble at 57-3 on Sunday, with both eyeing big centuries on an ideal batting deck.

But Brook only lasted five balls on Monday, adding six to his overnight 78 before dabbing at a Scott Boland delivery and edging into the safe hands of Steve Smith at slip.

It ended a 169-run partnership, not just England’s best of the series but the biggest by either team, surpassing Head and Alex Carey’s 162 in Adelaide.

Stokes only survived 11 balls before getting the faintest of edges off Mitchell Starc to Carey.

Jamie Smith lived dangerously and was fortunate to survive after chipping Cameron Green to Labuschagne at cover on 22. He began walking off, but replays showed Green overstepped, and it was a no-ball.

He added another 24 before medium-pacer Labuschagne bagged him in his first over.

The run rate slowed significantly after lunch when the new ball was taken, but Root persisted, passing 150 for a 17th time, just one behind the legendary Don Bradman and three short of Tendulkar.

He and Jacks put on 52 for the seventh wicket until Jacks sent a leading edge to Green in the gully off Neser. Root was the ninth man out, and Tongue followed without any addition to the score.

BPL: Rossington, bowlers take Chattogram Royals to top of table

SYLHET: A clinical bowling display backed by Adam Rossington’s and Mohammad Naim half-centuries powered Chattogram Royals to a nine wicket win over Sylhet Titans in the 11th match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025-26 here at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Royals chased down a mere target of 127 with ease in 16 overs, losing only wicket in the process.

Mohammad Naim and Adam Rossington made the contest one sided affair with a monumental 115-run partnership for the opening wicket.

The pair took full advantage of fielding restrictions, managing to put 52 in first six overs.

But, it was the middle phase of the innings in which both batters took Sylhet Titans bowlers to the cleaners. After a solid powerplay, Rossington and Naim scored 78 in the middled phase of the innings.

Naim who made 52 off 37, striking four boundaries and three sixes, perished on the fourth ball of the 13th over.

Meanwhile, Adam Rossington remained unbeaten on 73 off just 53 balls with the aid of eight fours and two sixes.

For Sylhet Titans, Rahatul Ferdous took one wicket.

Earlier, put in to bat first, Sylhet Titans could not get going and eventually ended their innings on 126 for 7 in 20 overs.

Chattogram Royals bowlers put pressure from the start as half of Sylhet side was sent back in first five overs.

As a result, they were reduced to 34-5 with Azmatullah Omarzai and Parvez Hossain Emon on the crease.

The duo stablized the innings with 43-run partnership which provided them some respite.

Emon made 17 whereas Azmatullah Omarzai remained the top-scorer with 44 from 41 balls with the help of a maximum and four boundaries.

For Royals, Mirza Baig and Mahedi Hasan scalped two apiece. Aamer Jamal, Mukidul Islam and Shoriful Islam also took one each.

With this win, Chattogram Royals are now at top position, with three wins out of four games.
