‘Opportunity for new players to show talent’ Babar on Shaheen’s absence

ROTTERDAM: Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam urged the new players in the team to showcase their talent and deliver performances in the absence of the team’s main strike Shaheen Shah Afridi from Asia Cup 2022 and the upcoming T20I home series against England.

“We will definitely miss Shaheen for his outstanding performances and contributions to the team but it’s an opportunity for newcomers to show their skills and talent,”  said Babar.

Shaheen Afridi has been ruled out of the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup as he has been recovering from a knee ligament injury. Fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain will replace the left-arm pacer for the tournament.

While commenting on the team’s performance after they whitewashed the Netherlands in the recently concluded three-match ODI series, the skipper stated that as a captain his plan was to bat in difficult conditions and then the bowlers defend the target.

“The wicket was difficult early on and bowlers were getting help due to moisture and seaming conditions but our batters did well,” he said.

Babar lauded the young pacer Naseem Shah for his sensational bowling as he grabbed five wickets and played an instrumental role in the team’s victory in the last match.

“I’m giving the hundred per cent credit to the fast bowlers, spinners and fielders for the win, especially the way Naseem Shah bowled with the new ball and the way he finished in the death overs, it was outstanding,” he added.

Furthermore, the skipper hailed the Netherlands team and their cricket board and expressed gratitude to the fans for coming out in numbers from different countries and showing their support for the team.

Fakhar, bowlers power Pakistan to edge past Netherlands in first ODI

ROTTERDAM: Pakistan right-arm pacers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf stunned the Dutch batting line-up after left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman led the way with an astonishing century as the Green Shirts beat Netherlands by 16 runs in the first ODI.

Set to chase 315, the hosts fell 16 runs short despite half-centuries from Vikramjit Singh, Tom Cooper, and Scott Edwards.

The hosts were off to a dismal start to their run chase as the side lost two wickets at a combined score of 24 in the fifth over as Max O’Dowd and Wesley Baressi fell cheaply.

Right-handed batter Bas de Leede then joined hands with Singh for a brief third-wicket partnership that propelled the Netherlands to 62 in the 13th over before the former perished after being trapped in his legs by Mohammad Wasim Jr for 16.

Cooper then joined Singh in the middle which sparked a magnificent partnership for the hosts as the dependable pair added 97 runs for the fourth wicket and tested the Pakistan bowling attack.

The partnership, however, could not flourish for more as Haris struck again to provide a much-need breakthrough to Pakistan. The right-handed batter scored 65 off 54 deliveries including six boundaries and two sixes.

Meanwhile, Singh also perished briefly after Cooper’s dismissal as left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz trapped him in front for 65. He faced 98 deliveries and smashed five boundaries.

Following the departure of the set batters, Pakistan bowlers quickly dominated the Dutch batting attack and halted the flow of runs for the home side. Netherlands skipper Edwards displayed character as he scored an unbeaten and valiant 71 off a mere 60 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and a six.

His heroic knock too, could not power the Netherlands over the line as the home side fell 16 runs short in the run chase and hence allowing Pakistan to start their series on a winning note.

Haris and Naseem were the picks of the bowlers for Pakistan as the right-arm pacers bagged three wickets each, while Nawaz and Wasim Jr managed to make one scalp each.

Pakistan, after winning the toss, opted to bat first against the hosts and were halted by a poor start as the touring side lost their opener Imam-ul-Haq in the sixth over at a mere score of 10.

Following his departure, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam anchored the innings for Pakistan as the pair added 168 runs for the second wicket. Fakhar led the charge with a century, while Babar remained unable to convert his fifty into a ton.

The right-handed batter lost his wicket in the 35th over while looking to shift the momentum and pace up his slow knock. However, while attempting to slog the ball, Babar miscued it to mid-off and walked back to the pavilion after scoring 74 off 85 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and a six.

Pakistan’s top-scorer for the first ODI, Fakhar, on the other hand, amassed his century but fell briefly after reaching it as he was run out a couple of overs later. The left-handed batter scored a run-a-ball 109 with the help of 12 boundaries and a six.

Fakhar’s dismissal sparked a frustrating collapse for the touring side as Pakistan lose three wickets in quick succession as wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, and Nawaz perished after scoring cheaply.

Following the collapse, leg-spinning all-rounder Shadab Khan stood up for his team and smashed a quickfire 48 off 28 balls including four boundaries and two sixes, while the debutant Agha Salman offered a helping hand with a valiant knock of 27 off 16 deliveries.

Both batters remained unbeaten as Pakistan finished at 314-6 in the allotted 50 overs.

For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede and Logan van Beek bagged two wickets each, while Vivian Kingma made one scalp.

The action-filled series is being telecasted live on Pakistan’s first HD Sports channel – A Sports and will be simultaneously streamed on the digital platform of ARY Digital Network – ARY ZAP in crystal clear HD quality.

Shaheen Afridi to miss first two ODIs against Netherlands: PCB

ROTTERDAM: Pakistan ace-pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi is set to miss the first two matches of the upcoming ODI series against the Netherlands, confirmed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday.

According to the PCB, the left-arm pacer has been ruled out of the first two games as he is currently undergoing rehabilitation after he pulled a knee injury during the Sri Lanka tour.

Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Babar Azam has the opportunity to set another record for himself as a century in the forthcoming ODI series will make him the first Pakistan captain to score 10 tons.

Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, needs to score 18 runs in the upcoming series to complete one thousand runs in ODI cricket.

Earlier Babar, in a press conference ahead of the team’s departure for the Netherlands also hinted at Shaheen’s possible absence as he revealed that the left-arm pacer will be rested at least for the first two ODIs, while at the same time expressing his desire for Shaheen to regain his fitness before Asia Cup 2022.

“We’re looking long-term at his fitness and health. We want him to play a game against the Netherlands if he’s fit and be ready for the Asia Cup,” Babar said.

“We have eleven trump cards. Each of them can be a matchwinner on their day. I have faith in every one of them, whether batters or bowlers,” he maintained.

Despite a knee injury, Shaheen was named for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Besides Shaheen, Pakistan all-format captain Babar also opened up on the ouster of the right-arm pacer Hasan Ali by stating that the latter has a chance to regain his form by playing domestic cricket.

“Our fast-bowling bench strength is excellent. They’ve now got an opportunity to showcase their skills. This is how you expand your pool,” Babar asserted.

“Yes, he’s (Ali) not in form, but it’s not like he has to prove anything. Domestic cricket is coming up. He’ll play that and make a strong comeback hopefully,” he maintained.

It is pertinent to mention here that the three-match ODI series between Pakistan and Netherlands will kick start on August 16. Whereas, the Green Shirts will start their Asia Cup 2022 campaign on August 28 against India.

‘Babar can replace Root as No.1 Test batter’ Mahela Jayawardene

DUBAI: Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene made a major prediction regarding the top-ranked white ball batter Babar Azam and asserted that he can replace England’s Joe Root as the World No.1 Test batter.

Jayawardene, in the latest episode of ICC Review, backed the Pakistan captain in response to the host’s question about whether Babar can replace Root as the top-ranked Test batter.

“Tough one!” Jayawardena said. “I would say Babar Azam has an opportunity. He’s been consistent in all three formats and it shows in his rankings. He’s a naturally gifted player, plays in all conditions, he’s got the game to adapt as well.

It depends on the amount of cricket, who’s playing when, and how much but the Babar might be the guy.”

Babar is the only batter in the top three across all formats and recently revealed his goal to top the charts in each format. The right-handed batter is ranked first in both ODIs and T20Is, while is third in the longest format of the games. Jayawardene, on the other hand, expressed his belief in the ability of Pakistan and stated that the former can pull this off.

“T20Is and ODIs, it is a tough one to hold on to because there are a lot of good players who have to be consistent,” Jayawardena said.

“As long as he can be that, because he has a very good role to play in that Pakistan setup – they have batters to bat around him, so he can play his own game – he should be able to hold on to that and at the same time, push himself to get better.

“He batted well in Sri Lanka. I think Prabath (Jayasuriya) was his nemesis – he got him three times out of the four innings. That was a very good battle to watch. Babar got a really good hundred in the first Test match.

“He’s always going to push himself to get better. Seen in a couple of his interviews recently that it is his goal as well to be No 1 across the table. There’s no harm in challenging yourself to get there.

“Being the captain as well, he has taken responsibility and performed, which is great to see. (It’s) Not an easy thing to do.

“I would put my money on him at least for a little while to hold to all three but there are some good quality players around who will keep pushing him.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Root has the opportunity to solidify his hold his position as number one. Babar, however, will don the white jersey in Pakistan’s home assignment against England, later this year.

‘We want Shaheen to be completely fit before Asia Cup’ Babar Azam

LAHORE: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam backed the team’s main strike bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi during his recovery from a knee injury and wanted him to be completely fit before the Asia Cup 2022.

Speaking to a scheduled press conference ahead of the national team’s ODI tour of the Netherlands, Babar stated that Shaheen would be travelling with the team so they could assess his fitness as the left-arm pacer is currently undergoing rehabilitation after he pulled an injury during Sri Lanka tour.

“In order to evaluate his fitness, we are taking Shaheen along with the team as we want him to be completely fit before the Asia Cup, ” he said.

The skipper opined on out-of-form Hasan Ali’s exclusion from the national squad and expressed confidence that a strong performance in the domestic season would propel his return to the national side.

“Hasan Ali is a team-man. Obviously, he is out-of-form but he has already demonstrated the type of athlete he is. I am confident that he will make a comeback after the upcoming domestic season,” he added.

While responding to a question on all-rounder Imad Wasim’s inclusion in the team, Babar stated that since Mohammad Nawaz had been performing well in the limited overs format, he would be continuing with the team yet the doors were not closed for Imad as well.

Furthermore, Babar extended full confidence in the middle-order batters, expecting strong performances from Khushdil Shah, Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali in the absence of experienced Shoaib Malik and Mohamad Hafeez.

Moreover, the national team skipper lauded the Pakistani athletes Arshad Nadeem and Nooh Dastgir Butt for winning the gold medals in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games and urged proper training facilities for the national athletes.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will play a three-match away ODI series against the Netherlands from August 16 to 21. The side will depart for Amsterdam in the wee hours of Friday, August 12.

Yadav fails to dethrone Babar from top slot in T20I rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam retained the top spot in the T20I batters’ list as India’s Suryakumar Yadav failed to dethrone the Pakistan skipper despite his astonishing recent surge in T20I rankings.

According to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) latest released rankings Babar maintained the No.1 position in the T20I rankings. At the same time, Yadav lingered on the second with a difference of 13 rating points as he missed the final T20I match of the series against West Indies.

Meanwhile, Indian batter Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant made significant strides in the rankings following India’s 4-1 win in the five-match T20I series against West Indies. Iyer jumped six spots to 19th while Pant moved seven places to 59th.

Earlier, Yadav jumped three spots to displace Pakistan’s wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan from the second position while posing a threat to Babar’s top rank as well.

The tense contest between Babar and Yadav for the top position will make the blockbuster Asia Cup 2022 clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on August 28 even more exciting for cricket fans in both countries.

‘If I was teaching any young boy cover drive, I’d say watch Babar’ Nasser

KARACHI: Former England captain and renowned commentator Nasser Hussain heaped praises on Pakistan’s all-format captain and top-ranked white-ball player Babar Azam, stating he would tell the youngsters to watch him play cover drives.

Nasser, in an interview, responded to the host’s question regarding which international cricketers, the youngsters should emulate playing cover drives and said he would tell them to watch Babar and some other international players including India’s KL Rahul.

“I’ve named Ian Bell, in Women’s game Lenning and Wolvaardt. Absolutely beautiful and it’s even more pleasing [to] the eye because it is a touch game. KL Rahul, for someone that plays a lot of white-ball cricket, I watch him a lot,” Nasser stated.

“Kane Williamson, again, someone who plays it right underneath him. I don’t think there’s any cricketer in the history of the game that’s played the ball later than Williamson. Joe Root, his cover and that open face that gets going through the ball,” he continued.

The former England captain then made a special mention for Babar and apologized to Indian fans for rating him above Virat Kohli, before declaring that if he were teaching any young boy, he would have him watch Babar’s cover drive.

“I’m going to be biased. Sorry Indian fans but I’m gonna go with Babar Azam. I nearly went Kohli because I think Kohli is slightly different. Kohli has a bit more of a flick of the wrist of it. Babar Azam has just a lovely little [touch],” Nasser shared.

“If I was teaching any young girl to watch, I’d ask her to watch Meg Lanning. I’m teaching any young boy to watch a cover drive. I would say watch Babar,” he maintained.

Yadav’s surge in T20I rankings poses threat to Babar’s top slot

DUBAI: Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav leapt forward to claim the second spot in the latest ICC T20I rankings putting Pakitan’s skipper Babar Azam’s top position in danger.

According to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) latest released rankings, Yadav jumped three spots to second in the list of T20I batters on the back of his fine form with Babar just two rating points ahead of him.

The 31-year-old’s sublime form in the T20Is has also bolstered his chances to dethrone Babar from his spot as India still have two matches left of their ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies.

Whereas, Babar will only get a chance to feature in T20Is with the onset of the Asia Cup later this month.

Yadav’s sudden rise in the top ranks is attributed to his outstanding recent performances which included a blistering century against England in Nottingham last month followed by a phenomenal run in India’s current tour of West Indies where he has amassed 111 runs so far at a strike rate in excess of 168.
