Babar Azam named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August 2023

DUBAI: Pakistan captain Babar Azam has earned the reward for his exceptional performance last month and has been crowned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August 2023.

Babar Azam won the coveted award for the third time by overcoming teammate Shadab Khan and West Indies hard-hitter Nicholas Pooran and has expressed his jubilation upon winning the honour.

“I am delighted to be named ICC Player of the Month for August 2023,” Babar said.

“The past month has been extraordinary for my team and I as we have put some terrific performances. With the Asia Cup coming to Pakistan after such a long time, it was great to play in front of the passionate and cricket-loving crowds of Multan and Lahore. That I scored my second ODI score of 150-plus in front of my own people in Multan doubled the joy.

“I am looking forward to making the most of the form as we head into an exciting phase of cricket with the backend of the Asia Cup nearing and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup around the corner. My team and I are eager to bring joy and happiness to the millions of Pakistan fans.”

Babar Azam enjoyed an excellent run of form in the ODI format last month and has maintained his top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Batter Rankings.

He scored two fifties in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka before notching a stunning 151 off 131 balls against Nepal in the opening game of the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023.

During this innings, the Pakistan skipper achieved a historic milestone, becoming the fastest player in the game’s history to reach 19 ODI centuries.

This century marked his 31st century across all formats for Pakistan, placing him on par with legends Javed Miandad and Saeed Anwar.

He now stands just behind Younis Khan (41), Mohammad Yousuf (39), and Inzamam-ul-Haq (35) in terms of centuries for Pakistan.

He also stands behind only Saeed Anwar (20) in terms of most ODI centuries for Pakistan.

Fakhar reacts hilariously after winning ICC Player of the Month

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman shared a hilarious response after he was named the ICC Player of the Month for April 2023 on Tuesday.

The left-hander won the ICC Player of the Month award for his outstanding performances in Pakistan’s recent home series against New Zealand.

Fakhar overcame the tough competition from emerging New Zealand batter Mark Chapman and Sri Lanka spin wizard Prabath Jayasuriya to clinch the award.

The 33-year-old, however, was in a state of disbelief after winning the award since it was a neck-and-neck race between him and Kiwi batter Chapman, who remained the leading run-getter in the T20I series during New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan.

Jis tareeqay se Chapman bhai ne hame T20I me koota tha, mujhe to laga usko hi mile ga,” Fakhar wrote on Twitter

(The way Chapman thrashed us in the T20I series, I thought he would win this award)

“But grateful to all the voters and fans for rooting out for me,” he added.

New Zealand’s Chapman scored 290 runs in five T20I games in Pakistan, including two fifties and a match-winning century.

He scored an unbeaten 104 off 57 deliveries, laced up with 11 boundaries and four sixes to power the Blackcaps to a series-levelling victory in the final T20I.

Fakhar Zaman, on the other hand, scored back-to-back centuries in the first two ODIs between Pakistan and New Zealand and made his claim to the Player of the Series award and a host of individual records.

He became the fastest batter not just from the country but from Asia to complete 3000 ODI runs and just the fourth Pakistan batter after Saeed Anwar, Zaheer Abbas and Babar(twice) to hit three centuries in three straight games.

Fakhar Zaman played a marathon knock of 180 not out – the highest by any Pakistan batter in a successful run chase – in the second ODI in Rawalpindi to help the Green Shirts chase down their second-highest total in ODIs.

He displayed similar exploits in the first match at the same venue where he scored 117 to lead the way for Pakistan in their 289-run chase.

Following his run-scoring spree, Fakhar also moved to the no.2 spot behind skipper Babar Azam on the ICC ODI Men’s Players’ Rankings.

The left-hander started the month with a rapid 47 in the first T20I in Lahore against New Zealand, playing a part in the home side’s thumping 88-run victory.

“I really enjoyed scoring back-to-back centuries in Rawalpindi, but my favourite was the 180 not out in the second match.

DUBAI: Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for his stellar performances in March 2023.

Earlier, the talismanic all-rounder also finished both as the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker for Bangladesh during the ODI series against England. In his side’s only win of the series, Shakib starred with a 71-ball 75 and followed it up with a four-for to take the Player of the Match award.

He was already in his prime when Ireland visited Bangladesh, thus, the veteran played a match-winning 93 in the first ODI. Later in the second T20I of the series, he scored a 24-ball 38* and then went to pick up five wickets inside the Powerplay in a dominating all-round display.

In the 12 games played in March, Shakib amassed 353 runs and picked up 15 wickets.

After winning the award for the second time, Shakib thanked the panel that voted for him ahead of a pair of his competitors.

“I am honoured to win the award and would like to thank the expert panellists who have voted for me,” he said.

“This is a recognition I greatly value because there are so many special performances in a month from a number of amazing cricketers.

“If I was to pick my highlight from the past month, it has to be the T20 series sweep against England and, with the team continuing to perform beautifully as a unit in all departments, it is easier for me now to concentrate on my role and contribute.”
