Babar Azam goes extra mile to reclaim his form ahead of semi-final

SYDNEY: Pakistan captain Babar Azam participated in the optional training session ahead of his team’s scheduled semi-final clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against New Zealand.

According to the details, the rest of the national team preferred to rest before the all-important semi-final against New Zealand, scheduled for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Babar, who is going through a rough patch, practised alone in the nets to regain his form.

The right-handed batter trained for a gruelling one and a half hours, while team mentor Matthew Hayden accompanied him.

It is pertinent to mention that Babar could manage to score 39 runs in five innings at a dismal average of 7.8 and a strike rate of 48.03.

England edge Sri Lanka to book semi-final berth, Australia crash out

SYDNEY: England batters held their nerves calm to complete a tricky final-over run chase against the spirited Sri Lankan bowling attack and qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals.

With England booking their semi-final spot, the defending champions Australia failed to make it to the final four.

England were off to a flying start to their run chase as skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales laid a solid foundation with a magnificent 75-run partnership.

However, Wanindu Hasaranga’s twin strikes in his two consecutive overs halted England’s march to an easy victory as he removed both the openers.

Jos Buttler fell in the eighth over after scoring 28 off 23, while England’s top-scorer Hales narrowly missed his half-century and could score 47 off 30 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and a six.

Following their dismissals, England ran into a frustrating collapse as they lost four wickets in a span of 53 deliveries for the addition of just 47 runs.

Ben Stokes, however, held his ground firmly in the nervy chase and guided his team to win with a 42 from 36 that only included two fours but kept the score ticking over until Chris Woakes’ cut for four with two balls remaining.

Following a decent performance from their bowlers, one of the tournament’s favourites England would now need to chase down the 142-run target to make their way to the semi-finals.

After opting to bat first in their last fixture of the ongoing mega event, Sri Lankan openers – Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka – provided a decent start to lay the foundation for a competitive total as they added 39 runs at a rapid pace.

Amid the flying start, Mendis found it hard to charge on the English bowlers before falling short to Chris Woakes in the fourth over. He scored 18 off 14 balls.

Nissanka, on the other hand, batted brilliantly and went on to top score for his side with a magnificent half-century knock; scoring 67 off 45 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and five sixes.

Besides Nissanka, none of the Sri Lankan batters could make an impact against the strong English batting lineup and only Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a notable contribution of a run-a-ball 22.

Whereas, five of the Sri Lankan batters failed to amass double-figures and consequently, their side could score 141/8 in their quota of 20 overs.

Sri Lanka’s 141-run total is the lowest total by any team batting first at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Mark Wood led the bowling attack for England with three wickets despite going for 17 runs in his first over, while Sam Curran, Rashid Khan, Ben Stokes and Woakes struck out a batter each.

New Zealand qualify for the third consecutive T20 WC semi-final

ADELAIDE: Last year’s runner-up, New Zealand, have become the first team to make their way to the semi-finals of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

In their last Super 12s fixture against Ireland, the Blackcaps sealed a resounding 35-run victory despite a rapid start from the Irish openers in the run chase.

Following their comfortable victory, Australia then needed to produce alike performance in their fixture against Afghanistan up next, in order to keep up with New Zealand’s net run rate.

Consequently, the defending champions had to amass 185 runs against Afghanistan but they could manage to score 168/8 despite Glenn Maxwell’s quickfire half-century.

The Australian bowlers too failed to restrict the Afghan batting lineup to a paltry total and handed their team a narrow four-run triumph.

Following New Zealand’s qualification, the Kane Williamson-led side can finish no less than second in Group 1 but could slip a spot if England hammer Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Australia, on the other hand, now want Sri Lanka to beat England to book a semi-final spot, while only a victory by any margin can power Jos Buttler’s side into the final four.

Pakistan eye miraculous semi-final entry as they take on South Africa

SYDNEY: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has so far been a bumpy ride for Pakistan as the chances to progress into the final four looks bleak for them but a win against the only unbeaten side of the tournament – South Africa – today could keep them in contention for a semifinal spot.

Albeit the fact that the Babar Azam-led side would not be masters of their destiny even if the results of today’s match come in their favour yet a win over Proteas could help Pakistan maintain their perfect record against the side in the T20 World Cups.

So far, both teams have faced each other three times in T20 World Cups – 2009, 2010 and 2012 – and each time the Green Shirts came out victorious with the barest of the margins.

Proteas, however, have the perfect combination at their disposal to turn the tables around this time, especially facing their furious pace attack would be a major challenge for Pakistan’s top order.

Pakistan would still want their openers – Babar and Mohammad Rizwan – to fire in a must-win match and lay a solid foundation. South African all-rounder David Miller, on the other hand, is keen to exploit the team’s top-order woes to keep them under extreme pressure.

However, with Fakhar Zaman ruling out of the World Cup due to an injury, Pakistan captain Babar would again reshuffle his men to form a perfect combination.

As far as bowling is concern, both teams have immense strength in their bowling attack and have paid both of them well in the mega event thus far.
[totalpoll id=”242113″]

Both teams have won their last Super 12s matches but South Africa’s testing and challenging triumph against India can turn out to be a major morale booster for them, while the Green Shirts also got their first two points with a victory over the Netherlands.

The current situation of the Group 2 points table hints that if Pakistan win today they could drag the qualifications till the last round of the group matches whereas if Proteas defeat Pakistan they will confirm their spot in the final four.

India hold off Bangladesh in a rain-hit T20 WC thriller

ADELAIDE: Indian bowlers held their nerves calm to keep momentum-filled Bangladesh at bay and successfully defended the revised 151-run target to power their side to a much-needed victory in the rain-affected Super 12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Bangladesh opener Litton Das provided a flying start to his side in the run chase with his quickfire fifty.

Das’ fifty powered Bangladesh to 66/0 in seven overs when rain intervened and the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method revealed that the side was 17 runs ahead of the par score.

Luckily for India, the rain stopped and allowed the action to resume with the second innings reduced to 16 overs and the target was revised to 151.

The resumption of the action turned out to be lethal for Bangladesh as the side lost their key batter Das with just two deliveries into the eighth over.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a quickfire 60 off 27 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes.

Das’ dismissal triggered a frustrating collapse for Bangladesh as their batting lineup slipped to 108/6 in the 13th over with their captain Shakib Al Hasan also falling cheaply after scoring just 13.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper batter Nurul Hasan and tailender Taskin Ahmed put on an astounding partnership for the seventh wicket and kept Indian bowlers on their toes.

The duo, however, remained unable to power their side to glory and fell just five runs short as Bangladesh could get to 145/6 in 16 overs.

Nurul remained unbeaten with his gritty 25 off 14, while Taskin could score 12 not out.

Arshdeep Singh – who held his nerves calm to successfully defend 20 runs in the final over – and Hardik Pandya bagged two wickets each, while Mohammed Shami made one scalp.

India, batting first on the invitation of Bangladesh captain Shakib, posted a mammoth 184/6 at the back of Kohli and Rahul’s brilliance.

The men in blue had a dismal start to their innings as they lost their skipper Rohit Sharma (2) with just 11 runs on the board in the fourth over.

Following the horrific start, Kohli and Rahul stood up for the team and anchored the innings with a valiant 67-run partnership for the second wicket.

The second wicket stand proved vital for India as the duo added 67 runs in just six overs before the core aggressor Rahul fell to top-ranked T20I all-rounder Shakib.

The right-handed batter ended his poor form with a brilliant 50 off just 32 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and four sixes.

The new top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav then joined Kohli in the middle and added 38 runs for the third wicket.

Yadav dominated the quickfire stand with a brilliant cameo of 30 before Shakib castled him in the 15th over. He faced just 16 deliveries and smashed four boundaries.

Kohli, however, remained firm at the crease and stitched brief partnerships with Hardik Pandya (5), Dinesh Karthik (7) and Axar Patel (7) and took his side past the 150-run mark in 18 overs.

All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with a quickfire 13 off six at the death and put on an unbeaten 27-run partnership with Kohli in just nine deliveries.

Kohli remained the top scorer for India with 64 not out off 44 balls, laced with eight boundaries and a six.

Hasan Mahmud led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 3/47, while skipper Shakib bagged two wickets.

Virat Kohli becomes highest run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups

ADELAIDE: India’s veteran batter Virat Kohli has outrun Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-scorer in the history of ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

Jayawardene had occupied the record for almost eight years as the right-handed batter topped the chart in the 2014 edition with a total of 1016 runs.

Kohli, however, on Wednesday, broke the record amid his side’s fourth Super 12s fixture against Bangladesh. The right-handed batter amassed the milestone with an astounding batting average of 80 and a decent strike rate of 130.

In the seventh over of India’s innings against Bangladesh, Kohli flicked Taskin Ahmed at mid-wicket for a single, giving him the run that put him above Jayawardene.

Kohli just took 23 innings to become the highest run-scorer in the tournament history and has scored 12 half-centuries, while Jayawardene played 31 innings to set the record.

The Sri Lankan batter, however, faced fewer balls (754) than Kohli (773).

Kohli is currently unbeaten at 31 off 27 deliveries, with his side scoring 119/3 in 14 overs.
