Australia pick Singaporean cricketer Tim David in T20 World Cup squad

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia announced a 15-member squad on Thursday to defend the ICC T20 World Cup title with T20 specialist Tim David receiving a maiden call-up in the otherwise unchanged squad.

All-rounder Tim has already represented the associate member team Singapore in the T20Is and over the past two years, he has built a reputation as a match finisher in the franchise leagues including Pakistan Super League, Indian Premier League, Big Bash League and England’s T20 Blast.

Tim replaced the leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson, the only change Australia made in the team that won the T20 World Cup held last year in Dubai.

“Tim (David) continues to establish himself with some quality performances in leagues around the world, earning a place in the squad. He is a highly gifted, natural ball striker who will add extra batting depth to the group which has had a lot of success in T20 cricket,” said Australian Chair of Selectors George Bailey

Aaron Finch-led squad will first tour India for the three-match T20I series later this month before starting their home T20 World Cup campaign on October 22 when they face New Zealand in the opening game of the Super 12 round.

Meanwhile, middle-order batter Mitchell Marsh has also been included in the squad despite currently facing an ankle injury during the ongoing home ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Bailey confirmed that Marsh would be fit before the tour of India and would continue with his role at no.3 in the batting order.

Veteran opener David Warner, however, will not accompany the team during its overseas task with Cameron Green to replace him. Warner will join the team for the T20 World Cup.

Netherlands, Zimbabwe qualify for ICC T20 World Cup 2022

BULAWAYO: Netherlands and Zimbabwe have qualified for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022 after edging past Papa New Guinea (PNG) and the United States of America (USA) respectively in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B.

In the respective semi-finals of the qualifying event, the Netherlands sank the USA by seven wickets, while Zimbabwe thrashed PNG by 27 runs.

In the second semi-final, the USA were off to a decent start as the opening pair of in-form Steven Taylor and skipper Monank Patel laid a solid foundation with a 51-run stand.

The pair lit the hopes of their side to make their first global ICC tournament before Paul van Meekeren provided the first breakthrough to the Netherlands as he removed Taylor for 26 – his lowest total in the tournament.

Following Taylor’s dismissal, the side then ran into a frustrating collapse and soon bowled out for a mere 138 in the final over as the rest of the batters could not make significant contributions.

The USA skipper Monank Patel, however, remained the top-scorer for his side with a blistering knock of 32 runs off just 15 deliveries. Nisarg Patel, on the other hand, also chipped in with an important 28 down the order.

For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede and van Meekeren bagged two wickets each, while Logan van Beek and Shariz Ahmed made one scalp each.

In the run chase, the Netherlands were off to a shaky start as their opener Stephan Myburgh fell for a three-ball duck to Saurabh Netravalkar.

Max O’Dowd and de Leede then anchored the run chase after the early hiccup and batted sensibly to bolster their side to a comfortable position.

De Leede led the attack despite the Dutch losing two wickets in consecutive overs as he reached an important fifty from 33 balls. The right-handed batter then put on an unbeaten 77-run partnership with skipper Scott Edwards and assured his side the second consecutive T20 World Cup appearance.

Following his magnificent knock of 91 runs off just 67 deliveries, laced with a dozen boundaries including three sixes, the right-handed batter was adjudged as the player of the match.

In the first semi-final, Zimbabwe amassed a massive total of 199/5 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a combined effort by the batters.

Right-handed batter Wessly Madhevere top-scored for the side with a magnificent knock of 42 runs, while skipper Craig Ervine chipped in with an important 38.

For PNG, Sese Bau and Charles Amini claimed two wickets each, while Riley Hekure struck out a batter each.

Set to chase a mammoth 200, PNG fell short of 27 runs as they finished at 172/8 in 20 overs, despite a valiant knock from Tony Ura, who scored 66 off 35 deliveries.

Top-order batter Amini also chipped in with a 31-run knock, while the rest of the batters could not shine on the big stage and walked back to the pavilion after scoring cheaply.

For the hosts, Blessing Muzarabani led the way with two wickets, while Sean Williams, Luke Jongwe, Sikandar Raza, Madhevere, and Richard Ngarava made one scalp each.

Ireland beat Netherlands comfortably followed by Campher’s heroics

ABU DHABI: Paul Stirling (30) and Gareth Delany (44) comfortably chased the target for Ireland as they beat Netherlands comfortably by seven wickets in third match of T20 World Cup’s qualifying round.

Set to chase paltry 107 runs in 20 overs, Ireland’s opener Stirling partnered strongly with middle-order batter Delany to set the tone of the chase after they lost two quick wickets. Fred Klaassen, Brandon Glover, Pieter Seelaar bagged a wicket each for Netherlands.

Stirling struck a boundary and a six whereas Delany smashed five boundaries and two sixes during his stay at the crease.

Earlier, Curtis Campher bagged four back-to-back wickets in an over to register a record in T20 World Cup’s history and helped Ireland bowl out the Netherlands for 106.

After deciding to bat first, Netherlands lost their opener, Ben Cooper, on a run-out that put them under pressure. The Netherlands lost two quick wickets initially as Ireland started taking charge in third match.

Max O’Dowd and Bas de Leede tried to cope up with the pressure as they scored 23 runs together but Josh Little came up with power and bagged Leede in the fifth over to reduce the Netherlands to 22-1.

Dowd carried his momentum and alongside Colin Ackermann scored crucial 29 runs before Campher came and conquered the show. The right-arm medium pacer took four wickets in a row to rattle the opposition.

Further destruction was caused by Mark Adair who picked up three wickets to help Ireland keep their upper hand. Dowd fought hard and scored worthy 51 runs off 47 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Netherland’s skipper Pieter Seelaar added 21 runs to his team’s total.

Apart from Campher and Adair, Little bagged a wicket for Ireland.
