‘Doors are open for Sarfaraz, Amir, Imad,’ says Inzamam

LAHORE: Chief Selector of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team Inzamam-ul-Haq on Friday, clarified that Sarfaraz Ahmed, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir can be considered for selection when needed for the team.

Inzamam-ul-Haq announced announced a 15-member Pakistan squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India with the only major change being pace bowler Hasan Ali replacing injured Naseem Shah.

While many fans hoped to see Sarfaraz Ahmed, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir in the touring party for the World Cup, Inzamam-ul-Haq stated the clear criteria for selection.

“The doors of the Pakistan team are open for everyone, be it Sarfaraz Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir or even Shan Masood, they are all good players and have performed for Pakistan,” said Inzamam-ul-Haq.

“However, the criteria for selection is our domestic cricket, whoever wants to get selected needs to perform in domestic cricket to be in contention,” he further added.

“Mohammad Amir is a good cricketer but he is currently retired, but just like everyone else, doors are open for him,” he concluded.

The 15-member Pakistan team will kick off their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. Prior to that, they will play two warm-up matches against New Zealand and Australia on September 29 and October 3 respectively.

Inzamam-ul-Haq opens up on Hasan Ali selection in ICC World Cup 2023 squad

LAHORE: Inzamam-ul-Haq, the national chief selector announced a 15-member Pakistan squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, the notable selection, however, was the returning pace-bowler Hasan Ali.

Hasan Ali returned to the Pakistan ODI squad after one year, replacing injured fast bowler Naseem Shah, who injured his right shoulder during the Asia Cup 2023 match against India. He last played an ODI match against West Indies in June 2022, where he picked up two wickets.

The head of national selection committee, Inzamam-ul-Haq justified Hasan Ali’s selection on the basis of experience and injuries to other pace bowlers.

“We were forced to make one change [Hasan Ali] because of an unfortunate injury to Naseem Shah,” said Inzamam-ul-Haq. “Our fast bowlers are facing injuries, [Mohammad] Hasnain has an ankle injury and is out injured and so is Ihsanullah, so Hasan Ali has been included in the team on the basis of experience.”

He also explained the reason for Hasan Ali not replace Naseem Shah in Asia Cup 2023 instead of Zaman Khan.

“Hasan Ali was suffering from a finger injury at the time when Naseem Shah got injured in the Asia Cup,” Inzmam-ul-Haq explained.

Hasan Ali underwent surgery after he injured his finger while playing for Dambulla Aura in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) playoff game against Galle Titans last month. He picked up eight wickets at an astonishing average of 16.12 in the five games in the tournament.

Hasan Ali has represented Pakistan in 60 ODI games and picked 91 wickets, since his debut in 2016. He was also part of Pakistan’s squad in the ICC ODI World Cup 2019, as well as Pakistan’s successful Champions Trophy triumph under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed in 2017.

Hasan Ali named in Pakistan’s squad for ICC World Cup 2023

Inzamam-ul-Haq, the head of the national men’s selection committee, today announced Pakistan’s squad, featuring the returning pace bowler Hasan Ali, for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India, commencing on October 5.

Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam will lead the 15-member Pakistan squad in the mega-event, while all-rounder Shadab Khan will serve as his deputy.

Experienced pace bowler Hasan Ali returned to the Pakistan ODI squad after one year, replacing injured fast bowler Naseem Shah, who injured his right shoulder during the Asia Cup 2023 match against India.

“We were forced to make one change [Hasan Ali] because of an unfortunate injury to Naseem Shah. We had a few injury scares in the recent Asia Cup, but I am glad to share that all the players are fully fit and are eager to perform for their country in the all-important tournament,” chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq explained in the press conference.

Hasan Ali last played an ODI match against West Indies in June 2022, where he picked up two wickets. He has represented Pakistan in 60 ODI games and picked 91 wickets, since his debut in 2016. He was also part of Pakistan’s squad in the ICC ODI World Cup 2019.

Young pace bowler Zaman Khan and wicket-keeper Mohammad Haris, who were part of the Pakistan squad in Asia Cup 2023, are named as reserve players along with leg spinner Abrar Ahmed, who has represented Pakistan in six test matches.

Meanwhile, Tayyab Tahir and Faheem Ashraf from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad failed to make it into the ICC World Cup 2023 squad. Faheem Ashraf played three matches and picked up three wickets in the tournament, while Tayyab Tahir did not feature in any game.

Inzamam-ul-Haq also gave an update about pace bowler Haris Rauf’s recovery after getting injured during the match against India in the Asia Cup.

“I have received encouraging reports from our medical panel about Haris Rauf. He has started to (shadow) bowl at the National Cricket Academy and will be available for selection,” said Inzamam-ul-Haq.

The former captain showed faith in the current bunch of players and backed them to make the nation proud with their performance in the ICC World Cup 2023.

“This team has performed wonderfully well over the last couple of years and that is why we have shown faith in the same bunch,” he said.

“I have a firm belief that this squad can bring the World Cup trophy to Pakistan and make the whole nation proud with their incredible performances.”

The Green Shirts will kick off their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. Prior to that, they will play two warm-up matches against New Zealand and Australia on September 29 and October 3 respectively.

Pakistan’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad to be announced on Friday: PCB

LAHORE: The much-anticipated Pakistan squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 will be announced on Friday morning, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed.

In an official statement, the PCB revealed that the national men’s Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq met PCB management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf on Thursday afternoon and finalized the 15-member squad for the ICC World Cup 2023.

“Inzamam ul Haq, chief selector, who couldn’t make into the meeting yesterday due to a medical emergency but met Zaka Ashraf on Thursday afternoon to share his input,” PCB said in a statement.

“After the completion of the review, Inzamam has finalised the Pakistan squad for the ICC World Cup, which will be announced on Friday morning in a press conference scheduled to take place at 1115 am at Level 2, Far-End Building of Gaddafi Stadium,” the statement added.

The PCB also reviewed the national men’s team’s performance in the recently concluded ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023.

The PCB high-ups under the Chairman Management Committee Zaka Ashraf on Wednesday evening met with the National coaching staff headed by Mickey Arthur, captain Babar Azam, vice-captain Shadab Khan, and former captains Misbah ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez.

In the meeting, the complete men’s national coaching staff which includes head coach Grant Bradburn, batting coach Andrew Puttick, and bowling coach Morne Morkel were also invited to report on the team’s recent performance.

The review meeting was also attended by Dr Sohail Saleem to brief about players’ injuries and the way forward for players’ rehabilitation programs.

In a robust analysis, every aspect of recent team performance, player fitness, and future plans came into discussion with a view to bringing improvement to the side. There was an agreement on making a better approach and strategy on players’ workload. The importance of strengthening the bench was also emphasised.

Chairman Management Committee Zaka Ashraf: “The philosophy behind this review was to create an atmosphere of open discussion and develop consensus. The idea is to have everyone on board and debate about performances, identifying the problems and their solutions. We have to debate strengths and weaknesses so that we are clear about what and where we need to invest for the betterment of our team.

“Discussion revealed that the previous management had allowed a lot of players to play league cricket which caused them to fatigued ahead of their national duty. But going forward we have agreed to form a proactive approach to tackle players workload and give national duty a priority.

“I am glad we had a good positive review session and are on the same page. We are confident that the experience gained in the Asia Cup was a learning curve and will help prepare for the ICC Men’s World Cup.

“Our team is filled with talent, and we believe they have the capability to compete and win at the highest level. We have world-class batters and bowlers and are committed to providing them with the necessary support and resources to ensure they are well-equipped ahead of the mega event.”

Joe Root rested for remaining Ireland ODIs to prepare for ICC World Cup 2023

LONDON: England’s experienced batter Joe Root has been rested for the remaining matches of the ODI series against Ireland in a bid to prepare for the ICC World Cup 2023 in India, starting next month.

“In preparation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India starting next month, Yorkshire and England Men’s batter Joe Root is to be rested for the remaining matches in the Metro Bank ODI series against Ireland,” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

Following Joe Root’s exclusion for the remaining two ODIs against Ireland, the ECB added Somerset batter, Tom Kohler-Cadmore to bolster England’s squad.

Kohler-Cadmore is set to join the England squad in Nottingham following the conclusion of Somerset’s County Championship Division One match against Kent at Taunton, which is scheduled to finish on Friday.

The second ODI of the three-match series is slated to take place at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

For the unversed, Joe Root was added to the England squad for the first ODI against Ireland at his own request as he bid to rediscover his form in the 50-over format ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, he did not get the opportunity to boast his preparations as the first ODI between England and Ireland was washed out without a ball bowled.

Reports further suggested that the ECB also consider adding Jason Roy as Joe Root’s replacement but the right-handed opener turned down the opportunity to re-join England squad for the ODI series remainder.

Notably, Roy was dropped from England’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad despite being named in the provisional 15.

England-Ireland ODI Series schedule:

1st ODI: England v Ireland, Wednesday 20 September 2023, Headingley, Leeds (match abandoned)

2nd ODI: England v Ireland, Saturday 23 September 2023, Trent Bridge, Nottingham

3rd ODI: England v Ireland, Tuesday 26 September 2023, Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol

Pat Cummins considers India ODIs as key ICC World Cup 2023 preparation

Australian captain Pat Cummins said on Thursday that they are hoping to try different team combinations and players in the ODI series against India to prepare for the ICC World Cup 2023, starting next month.

He also said that he had fully recovered from a wrist injury and hoped to play all three one-day internationals against hosts India starting Friday.

While Cummins returns, Australia still won’t have the services of pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the first match in the northern Indian city of Mohali.

“I am feeling pretty good, pretty much 100 percent, and hope to play tomorrow and play all the games,” Cummins told journalists.

But the Australian pace spearhead said Starc, who is recovering from a groin injury, and Maxwell, from an ankle injury, won’t play “but will be available later in the series”.

Most of Australia’s top players are also key members of different franchises in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament, and Cummins said they “have pretty good information” about the local conditions.

“Hopefully we will get a few answers in the next few games,” Cummins said.

Australia, along with India and England, are seen as three top contenders going into the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

India have rested captain Rohit Sharma and batting superstar Virat Kohli for the first two ODIs and also hope to try different players before the tournament.

India will be led by KL Rahul in the absence of Sharma, who returns with other key players for the final match of the series.

South Africa’s pace duo ruled out of ICC World Cup 2023

South Africa suffered a major blow to their ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 campaign as pace bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala were ruled out of the tournament after failing to clear a fitness test.

Both pace bowlers were named in South Africa’s initial 15-member squad for World Cup 2023 in India and also featured in the recently concluded home ODI series against Australia. South Africa came from behind to win the series 3-2 after losing the first two games.

However, both players failed to play their part in South Africa’s series victory as Anrich Nortje played only one match and was ruled out after bowling five overs due to a back injury, while, Sisanda Magala managed to pick one wicket in four overs in the third ODI before being ruled out due to discomfort in his previously injured knee.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and pace bowler Lizaad Williams as replacements for the injured pacers.

Head coach of South Africa Rob Walter expressed his disappointment over Nortje and Magala missing out on the mega-event.

“It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich [Nortje] and Sisanda [Magala] to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup. Both are quality players that add immense value to the Proteas. We sympathize in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action,” said Rob Walter

“This provides an opportunity for Andile [Phehlukwayo] and Lizaad [Williams] on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia. They offer great skill sets and we’re excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year’s World Cup.”

South Africa will depart for India on September 23 and will kick off their World Cup 2023 campaign against Sri Lanka on 7 October at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

New Zealand to decide Tim Southee’s World Cup fate after surgery

New Zealand paceman Tim Southee’s participation in next month’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be decided after his surgery for a fractured and dislocated thumb, New Zealand Cricket said Wednesday.

Southee faces an operation on Thursday and his World Cup fate will be decided early next week, but New Zealand coach Gary Stead is hopeful the bowler can recover in time.

“We’ve got our fingers crossed the surgery goes well for Tim,” Stead said.

Tim Southee, New Zealand’s Test captain, will have pins or screws inserted in his thumb, Stead said.

“Providing the procedure is a success, it will be a matter of ensuring Tim can tolerate the pain and manage the actual wound when returning to train and play,” Stead added.

The Black Caps coach hopes Southee plays in their World Cup opener against England in Ahmedabad on October 5.

Tim Southee suffered the injury last Saturday while dropping a catch off England’s Joe Root in the final one-day international of the four-match series.

The New Zealander immediately looked to be in pain and left the field to go for a scan, failing to return.

The 34-year-old has taken 214 wickets in 157 ODIs.

“Tim’s obviously a hugely experienced and important figure in our team. We want to give him every chance to be part of this World Cup campaign,” Stead added.

New Zealand are bidding to reach a third straight final at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The last edition’s finalist New Zealand will travel to Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series, scheduled from September 21 to 26.

The Kiwis will be looking to win their first ODI series in Bangladesh in 15 years, having lost all seven matches to the hosts in the previous two series respectively in 2010 and 2013 but they will be without their key players including Tim Southee.

Bangladesh, who are yet to name their ICC Men’s World Cup squad, also rested key players including regular captain Shakib Al Hasan along with all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, and pace trio Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.

Bangladesh, New Zealand rest key players for ODI series ahead of World Cup

New Zealand and Bangladesh will both rest their captains and several other key players in their three-match ODI series starting Thursday ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Instead of Kane Williamson, Lockie Ferguson will lead the Kiwis, who included only five members of their World Cup squad for the series at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Tim Southee — who is to have a thumb operation — and Tom Latham are the highest-profile other Kiwi absentees.

But pacer Trent Boult, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, spinner Ish Sodhi, and batsman Will Young are included.

“This is a big series for us and a very challenging one,” Ferguson, who is on his maiden tour of Bangladesh, said Wednesday.

“From our point of view, it’s good build-up for a World Cup,” he added. “We know how strong Bangladesh are on their home conditions, so it’s a good challenge for us.”

The Kiwis will be looking to win their first ODI series in Bangladesh in 15 years, having lost all seven matches to the hosts in the previous two series respectively in 2010 and 2013.

Bangladesh spinners also tested New Zealand in a 3-2 win of a five-match series in 2021, but Ferguson said they were ready to face the challenge.

“But our batters have been preparing,” he said. “They’re used to spinning tracks, having played around the world.”

Bangladesh have yet to name their World Cup squad but rested regular captain Shakib Al Hasan along with all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, and pace trio Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.

Stand-in Bangladesh captain Liton Das said the series would be a great opportunity for his teammates to stake a claim to the World Cup squad.

“The players who will play have been out of international cricket for a long time,” he said. “Everyone has a chance.”

Bangladesh have recalled senior campaigner Mahmudullah Riyad for the series, with the right-hander last playing an ODI in March against England.

Veteran opening batsman Tamim Iqbal also returned after his retirement U-turn and injury layoff that forced him to miss the recent Asia Cup.

Bangladesh failed to reach the Asia Cup final but defeated ultimate winners India in their last match to finish the tournament on a high.

The second and third ODIs will be held at the same ground on September 23 and 26.

The series will be the last for both teams before the World Cup starts in India on October 5.

Bangladesh squad: Liton Das (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Anamul Haque, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah Riyad, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Zakir Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Khaled Ahmed.

New Zealand squad: Lockie Ferguson (capt), Finn Allen, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Chad Bowes, Dane Cleaver, Dean Foxcroft, Kyle Jamieson, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Will Young.
