Pacers, Sharma help India script triumphant start to T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK: A ferocious display of pace bowling, followed by captain Rohit Sharma’s half-century helped India register a dominant victory over Ireland in the eighth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Wednesday.

Chasing a small total of 97 runs, India achieved the target in 12.2 overs after losing two wickets, at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

They had a shaky start to the chase as Virat Kohli (1) fell in the third over with 22 runs on the board. However, captain Rohit Sharma, along with Rishabh Pant, dominated Ireland bowlers with a steady 54-run stand in 44 balls.

Sharma scored the bulk of runs, completing his half-century in the process before getting retired hurt. He scored 52 off 37 with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Suryakumar Yadav (2) replaced Sharma on the crease but soon fell prey to Ben White with India needing six runs to win. Pant then finished the game in style with a six off Barry McCarthy in the 13th over.

The left-hander scored an unbeaten 36 off 26, featuring five boundaries that included two sixes.

Meanwhile, Mark Adair and White claimed one wicket each for Ireland.

Ireland lost six wickets in quick succession, slipping from 27-2 to 50-8, losing six wickets.

Gareth Delany and Josh Little (14) then raised a partnership of 27 off 18 to delay the eventual disaster.

Delany got run out after scoring 26 runs from 14 balls, featuring two sixes and two fours, as Ireland’s innings wrapped up in 16 overs.

‘Instead of Twitter, focus on performing’ Smith advises Rahul Tewatia

KARACHI: Former South African captain Graeme Smith advised the Indian all-rounder Rahul Tewatia to focus more on performing instead of Twitter after the latter’s ‘Expectations hurt’ tweet on being left out of the Indian squad for the Ireland tour.

Tewatia, who expressed his disappointment on Twitter by writing ‘Expectations hurt’ on being left out of the Indian squad for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, has received an advice from the former South African captain Smith, who advised the former to focus more on performing.

“It’s very difficult in India as you guys have so much talent. And coach Rahul Dravid, and captain Rohit Sharma must have had picked their majority of guys anticipating the conditions in Australia. I would say instead of Twitter, focus, perform and next time your time comes make sure no one can leave you out,” Smith told Star Sports.

The 29-year-old all-rounder was picked for the England T20Is at home last year, but an injury prevented him from making his debut. Tewatia had a brilliant Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season as the left-handed batter scored 217 runs in 16 matches at a commendable strike rate of 147.61.

Following his brilliant run in the marquee event, the former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar had a contrasting opinion on Tewatia failing to make it into the squad and stated that his hard work should have been recognized.

“Rahul Tewatia should have been in [the] team for Ireland. The one man who should have been in the team was Iceman Rahul Tewatia. He was superb in IPL. He batted cleverly throughout the tournament,” Gavaskar stated.

“Someone who shows that kind of temperament should have been in the team at least as 16th member of the team. At least his hard work should have been recognized,” Gavaskar concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that India will be touring Ireland later this month to play two T20Is, scheduled on June 26 and 28. The all-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead the side for the first time.

Squad: Hardik Pandya (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik.

India push Ireland to a crushing defeat in the ICC U19 World Cup

TAROUBA: Indian bowlers wreaked havoc on Ireland’s batting line-up before the batters provided a solid start to the side as the men in blue defeated the latter by a massive margin of 174 runs in the ongoing ICC Under 19 World Cup.

Batting first, India posted a total of 307/5 in the allotted 50 overs, thanks to the combined batting effort from the side’s top order.

The openers provided a solid 164 runs stand for the first wicket as Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Harnoor Singh both batted brilliantly. Raghuvanshi scored 79, while Singh top-scored with a terrific 88. He faced 101 deliveries and smashed 12 boundaries.

Following their departure, Raj Bawa also batted magnificently; scoring 42 including two boundaries and a six.

Later, Rajvardhan Hangargekar’s onslaught powered the side to 307/5. Rajvardhan scored a quickfire 39 off just 17 deliveries, laced with one boundary and five sixes.

For Ireland, Muzamil Sherzad bagged three wickets, while Jamie Forbes and Matthew Humphreys claimed one wicket apiece.

Set to chase 308, the Irish batting line failed completely as none of their batters could make an impact with the bat. Ireland, in the end, bowled out for a skimpy 133; losing the match by 174 runs. Scott MacBeth top-scored with 32.

For India, Kaushal Tambe, Aneeshwar Gautam, and Garv Sangwana picked two wickets each, while Hangargekar, Ravi Kumar, and Vicky Ostwal struck out a batter each.

In another match of the ongoing U19 World Cup, Australia sealed a consolidating victory over Scotland, defeating the latter by seven wickets while chasing 237.

Batting first, Charlie Tear and Tomas Mackintosh scored half-centuries, but, were a touch too slow. Therefore, despite the valuable contributions, the side could only post 236/8 in the allotted overs. Both Tear and Mackintosh scored 54 each, while Oliver Davidson scored 33.

For Australia, William Salzmann and Aidan Cahill bagged two wickets each, while Isaac Higgins and Joshua Garner made one scalp each.

In response, Australia comfortably chased down the total in the 40th over with seven wickets in hand. Teague Wyllie scored an amazing unbeaten century; scoring 101 off 115 deliveries, laced with eight boundaries and two sixes. Cahill, on the other hand, was also impressive as the right-handed batter scored a terrific 72 off just 45 deliveries. He smoked seven boundaries and four sixes.
