Former India batter claims Bronco Test introduced to sideline Rohit Sharma

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has voiced concerns that the recently introduced Bronco Test could be a tactical move to edge ODI skipper Rohit Sharma out of the 50-over side.

The Bronco Test, a rugby-inspired fitness drill involving repeated shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 metres, has been added to the Indian team’s fitness protocols under strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux.

It is now in place alongside the Yo-Yo test, long regarded as the benchmark for player fitness.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who retired from Tests and T20Is earlier this year, has made it clear that he intends to continue in ODIs with an eye on the 2027 World Cup.

However, reports indicate that the Indian team management is keen on fast-tracking Shubman Gill as a long-term captain in the format.

Speaking to an Indian media outlet, Manoj Tiwary suggested that while Virat Kohli, who has also stepped away from Tests and T20Is, is likely to remain central to ODI plans until 2027, Rohit may face a different challenge.

“I think it will be very difficult to keep Virat Kohli out of the 2027 World Cup plans. But I doubt whether Rohit Sharma will be looked at in the same way,” Tiwary remarked.

He went on to claim that the timing of the Bronco Test’s introduction raises questions.

“I’m a very keen observer of what’s going on in Indian cricket. I believe this test was brought in with players like Rohit Sharma in mind,” he added.

“Someone, perhaps, doesn’t want him in the future scheme of things. That’s why it has been introduced now. Why not earlier, when the new coach started his tenure? Who brought it in, and why now?”

The former cricketer added that while the test aims to raise fitness standards, it could also act as a filter to push out senior names, drawing parallels with the Yo-Yo test, which became mandatory soon after India’s 2011 World Cup win.

Despite the speculation, Rohit’s ODI numbers remain formidable. In 273 matches, he has amassed 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties.

He also holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs, which was a breathtaking knock of 264.

Former India cricketer believes team atmosphere behind Virat Kohli’s Test exit

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary believes star batter Virat Kohli could have extended his Test career, citing the team’s environment as a reason for his early exit.

Kohli, who officially retired from Test cricket in May 2025, brought down the curtain on a stellar red-ball career with 123 Tests, 9230 runs, 30 centuries, and 31 fifties to his name.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most successful Test skippers, Virat Kohli led India to historic series wins, including a landmark triumph in Australia, a first by an Asian team.

Kohli’s Test retirement followed his T20I exit in 2024 after leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup, where they beat South Africa in the final.

Now, Tiwary has commented on the talismanic batter’s departure from five-day cricket, citing his fitness and the Indian team environment in an interview with a sports outlet.

“No way. So he could have easily played for another three years minimum and four years. It was very surprising and shocking for all the cricket fans, including me as well, because all we knew that he’s so physically fit and he was preparing himself for the England series,” he said.

“I don’t know what happened. What is the story behind the scenes? I think he was not feeling like he was wanted in Team India. Only he can say. I think he will not come out and ever say this thing in public forum because the human he has become, he has evolved as a human being,” he added.

The 39-year-old discussed the team’s atmosphere and the sudden changes that took place behind the scenes, which led to his unexpected decision.

“But as a cricket lover, things that are happening around Team India, the cricketers like us who know a little bit, we all know what’s happening behind the scenes. I think he did not like the atmosphere he was playing in, Manoj Tiwary concluded.
