Renowned climber Noel Hanna dies on Nepal peak

Renowned Northern Irish climber Noel Hanna has died in Nepal while descending from the top of the treacherous Annapurna mountain range, officials said Tuesday.

The 56-year-old adventurer was returning after a successful summit of the 8,091-metre (26,545-foot) peak when he died at Camp 4 on Monday night.

“His body has been brought down and flown to Kathmandu,” Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks told AFP from Annapurna base camp.

Hanna had summited Everest ten times and climbed the highest point on all seven continents.

In 2006, he climbed the world’s highest peak and then cycled from the route’s base camp to the sea in eastern India, reaching the Bay of Bengal after a marathon two-week bike ride.

Annapurna, the world’s tenth highest mountain, is avalanche-prone, technically difficult and has a higher death rate than Everest.

Rescuers and helicopters were busy on the mountain on Tuesday in efforts to locate three other Indian climbers.

Record-holding Indian climber Baljeet Kaur, 28, and compatriot Arjun Vajpai, 30, were both rescued after a search lasting hours, the tourism department said.

Another 34-year-old Indian climber, who fell into a crevasse on Monday, is yet to be found.

The spring Himalayan climbing season had a tragic start last week with the death of three Nepali climbers on Everest.

The trio were crossing the treacherous Khumbu icefall on Wednesday as part of a supply mission when a block of glacial ice fell and swept them into a deep crevasse.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks and welcomes hundreds of adventurers each spring climbing season, when temperatures are warm and winds are typically calm.

The government has issued more than 700 climbing permits for various Himalayan mountains this season, including 319 for Everest.

She was accompanied by her compatriot Shehroze Kashif — who claimed the title of being the youngest Pakistani to make the Annapurna summit  — and Nepalese sherpas.

According to the details, the two Pakistani mountaineers along with the Seven Summit Treks (SST) team successfully ascended the peak between 6:30 and 7:30 am on Monday. They had started their expedition for the summit on Sunday evening.

With her latest expedition, Naila became the first Pakistani woman to summit four peaks over 8000 metres.

‘I wanted to be a role model for my kids’ Kiani aims Nanga Parbat summit

LAHORE: Pakistan’s first female climber to summit Gasherbrum-I (8068 metres) – the 11th highest peak in the world – Naila Kiani disclosed her future plans as she targets Nanga Parbat for her next expedition after she had successfully climbed three mountains of over 8000 metres.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Naila stated that her plan was to summit every 8000er mountain in Pakistan meanwhile climbing the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, was also on her bucket list.

“My future plan is to summit each one of Pakistan’s 8000m peaks. My next target is Nanga Parbat,” she revealed.

While expounding on her K2 expedition, Naila claimed leaving her children behind at home was the most challenging part of her journey.

“My family supported me enormously during K2 and other summits. I wanted to be a role model for my family. I didn’t have funds for the summit,” she said. “I started my journey in June and leaving the kids at home was the most difficult part of my journey”

She further went on to say that expediting the world’s second highest peak was not an easy task as debris used to fall from the top while ascending the mountain and the summit grew even more gruesome after reaching the death zone (Bottleneck of K2).

“I was not a professional climber but when I saw the K2 for the first time, I grew interested in mountaineering,” told Naila, who is a banker by profession.

Furthermore, she lamented the government for not supporting her and other mountaineers of the country.

“If the government offers assistance then we can also make mountaineering a professional field in our country like Nepal,” she concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Naila is the first Pakistani woman to summit three mountains above 8000m in a record time. She reached the summit of Gasherbrum II, K2 and Gasherbrum I.
