Pakistan set unwanted Test record after defeat to Bangladesh

MIRPUR: Pakistan registered an unwanted record after a 104-run defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

Nahid Rana produced a sensational fast-bowling display to guide the home side to a commanding victory on the fifth and final day of the opening Test.

Rana completed a memorable five-wicket haul by dismissing Shaheen Shah Afridi for a 13-ball duck to wrap up Pakistan’s innings at 163 while defending a target of 268.

With this defeat, Pakistan became the second team after Zimbabwe to lose three consecutive Tests to Bangladesh. Last year, Bangladesh clean-swept Pakistan in a memorable triumph, sealing the series 2-0.

In addition to this, Shan Masood now has the joint second-most defeats as Test captain in Pakistan’s history, with 11 defeats in 15 matches. Misbah ul Haq, who led Pakistan in 56 Tests, is the only man to lose more Tests than Shan Masood.

Nahid finished as the standout performer for Bangladesh, while Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam claimed two wickets apiece. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also chipped in with one scalp.

Pakistan’s resistance was led by debutant Abdullah Fazal, who top-scored with 66, but the visitors suffered a dramatic collapse in the final session.

Senior batters Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan attempted to steady the innings with a brief partnership and looked set to drag Pakistan back into the contest.

However, Nahid Rana struck in consecutive overs to dismiss both batters after they scored 15 runs each, effectively ending Pakistan’s hopes of survival.

The visitors then lost their final three wickets for just 10 runs as Bangladesh sealed an emphatic victory.

The second Test will be played from 16 to 20 May at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Bangladesh name squad for second Test against Pakistan

SYLHET: Bangladesh have named an unchanged 15-member squad for the second Test against Pakistan, set to be played on May 16 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. 

Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to lead the side with Mehidy Hasan Miraz as his deputy for the series.

The squad also includes two uncapped players —Tanzid Hasan and Amite Hasan. Tanzid has played 34 ODIs and 45 T20Is, amassing more than 1900 runs while 24-year-old Amite Hasan is included for the first time in the national team.

The right-handed batter has so far managed to score 3650 runs in 49 first-class matches at an impressive average of 49.32.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bangladesh sealed a 104-run victory over Pakistan in the series opener, thanks to Nahid Rana’s five-wicket haul.

Chasing 268 on day five, Pakistan stumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 163.  Debutant Abdullah Fazal remained the top-scorer for Pakistan, managing 66 off 113 balls with the aid of 11 fours.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was awarded player of the match for his 101 and 87 in the first and second innings, respectively.

In the current World Test Championship (WTC) standings, Bangladesh are placed eighth, having registered one defeat and one draw from three matches. Pakistan, meanwhile, sit fifth with one win and two losses, holding 12 points.

Noman Ali breaks 130-year-old record during Bangladesh Test

MIRPUR: Pakistan veteran spinner Noman Ali shattered a 130-year-old record during the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The left-arm spinner achieved the feat after dismissing Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 24 in Bangladesh’s second innings to complete 100 wickets in Test cricket.

At the age of 39 years and 217 days, Noman became the oldest player in Test history to reach the milestone. In doing so, he surpassed former England spinner Bobby Peel, who had completed 100 Test wickets at the age of 39 years and 180 days back in 1896.

Noman’s journey in Test cricket has been one of the most remarkable late success stories in Pakistan cricket. The spinner from Sanghar made his Test debut in 2021 against South Africa in Karachi at the age of 34.

He enjoyed a memorable start to his Test career by taking two wickets in the first innings before returning with a five-wicket haul in the second innings, becoming the 12th Pakistani bowler to claim a five-for on debut.

Since then, Noman has represented Pakistan in 22 Test matches and now has 101 wickets at an average of 25.08. The experienced spinner has registered nine five-wicket hauls in the format, while also claiming 10 wickets in a match on three occasions.

He also became the 21st Pakistani bowler to complete 100 wickets in Test cricket.

Notably, Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket remains legendary pacer Wasim Akram with 414 wickets. Former fast bowlers Waqar Younis and Imran Khan follow with 373 and 362 wickets respectively.

Before the interval, Fazal and fellow debutant Azan Awais had added a valuable 54-run partnership after Lunch to revive Pakistan’s chase.

Azan, who had scored a century in the first innings, was dismissed for 15 by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood failed to make an impact and was trapped by Nahid Rana after scoring just two runs.

Agha then joined  Fazal, and they ensured that Pakistan went to Tea without any further damage.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan resumed the chase in the second session, needing 262 more runs with nine wickets in hand after losing Imam-ul-Haq early to Taskin Ahmed.

Bangladesh had declared their second innings at 240-9 after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front with a composed 87 off 150 deliveries.

For Pakistan, Hasan Ali and Noman Ali picked up three wickets each in Bangladesh’s second innings, while Shaheen Afridi claimed two scalps.

Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim added just six runs to his overnight score before Hasan Ali dismissed him for 22.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz chipped in with a brisk 24 off 27 balls, while the lower-order failed to offer significant resistance.

For Pakistan, Hasan Ali and Noman Ali claimed three wickets each to keep the target within reach. Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up two wickets, while veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas contributed with one scalp.

Rain washes out second session on Day 4 in Bangladesh-Pakistan Test

MIRPUR: Rain interrupted proceedings after Lunch on Day Four of the opening Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday, with the hosts recovering well from an early collapse before the weather halted play.

Bangladesh was at 93-2 in their second innings at lunch, extending their overall lead to 120 runs after Pakistan was bowled out for 386 on the third day.

However, the match could not resume after lunch due to persistent rain, which caused the entire second session to be washed out. As conditions did not improve, the umpires decided to take the tea interval during the rain delay.

Earlier, the hosts resumed the morning session on 7 without loss with a slender 34-run advantage, but Pakistan struck twice in quick succession to put Bangladesh under immediate pressure.

Veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas provided the first breakthrough by dismissing overnight batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy for five.

Soon after, Hasan Ali removed opener Shadman Islam, who managed 10 runs, reducing Bangladesh to 23-2 early in the session.

With Pakistan threatening to seize control, Bangladesh captain Shanto and experienced batter Mominul once again combined to stabilise the innings.

The pair, who had earlier stitched together a crucial 170-run stand in the first innings, continued their impressive understanding at the crease with another composed partnership.

They added an unbeaten 70 runs for the third wicket to guide Bangladesh safely to Lunch without any further setbacks. At the break, Mominul remained unbeaten on 37, while Shanto was batting on 34.

Earlier on the third day, Bangladesh wrapped up Pakistan’s first innings for 386, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz starring with the ball after claiming five wickets.

For Pakistan, debutant Azan Awais impressed with a brilliant century, top-scoring with 103 runs.

Shanto stands tall as Bangladesh dominate rain-hit Day 4 against Pakistan

MIRPUR: Najmul Hossain Shanto produced another composed innings under pressure as Bangladesh tightened their grip on the opening Test against Pakistan before bad light forced an early end to Day Four at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

The hosts finished the day at 152-3 in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 179 runs with one day remaining in the contest.

Bangladesh captain Shanto remained unbeaten on 58 at stumps, while veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim was accompanying him on 16 after the pair safely negotiated the closing stages.

The day, however, was heavily disrupted by weather as persistent rain wiped out the entire second session after Lunch.

Play had resumed briefly in the third session, where Bangladesh continued to frustrate Pakistan through the experienced duo of Shanto and Mominul Haque.

The pair extended their third-wicket stand to 105 runs, and both completed well-crafted half-centuries to put Bangladesh firmly in control.

Pakistan eventually found a breakthrough, thanks to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who dismissed Mominul for a patient 56 off 120 deliveries.

Following the dismissal, Mushfiqur joined his captain at the crease, and the duo ensured Bangladesh suffered no further damage before bad light ended proceedings early.

WATCH: Babar Azam returns to nets after injury blow

MIRPUR: Pakistan ace batter Babar Azam has returned to the nets after suffering a knee injury that ruled him out of the first Bangladesh Test.

On Sunday, the right-hander was seen practicing in the nets under the supervision of batting coach Asad Shafiq alongside the team physio and trainer. During the session, Babar also ran between the wickets.

Babar was ruled out of the opening Test against Bangladesh, which is underway at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

During Thursday’s national team training, Babar felt a sharp pain in his left knee. After informing the management, he underwent an MRI scan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the ace batter will not be part of the Playing XI due to a left-knee injury.

“Pakistan batter Babar Azam will not be available for the first Test match against Bangladesh due to a injury in left knee,” the press release statement said.

However, it was later revealed that Babar’s injury was not serious, and he has been rested from the ongoing series opener as a precautionary measure.

The second Test will be played from 16 to 20 May at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

In the current World Test Championship (WTC) standings, Bangladesh are placed eighth, having registered one defeat and one draw from two matches, with a win percentage of 16.67.

Azan Awais, Abdullah Fazal make debut history during Bangladesh Test

MIRPUR: Pakistan debutant pair Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal scripted history after posting a century partnership against Bangladesh in the first Test at the Shere-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The pair became only the third Pakistani duo to share a century stand on Test debut, putting together a 104-run partnership for the second wicket.

Fazal joined Awais when Pakistan were 106 -1 on day two. The pair batted with maturity and composure to keep the Bangladesh bowlers at bay.

Fazal made 60 off 120 balls with the help of seven fours and a six, while Awais scored 103 off 165 balls, including 14 fours.

For Pakistan, Khalid Ibadulla and Abdul Kadir hold the record for the highest partnership by a debutant pair, adding 249 runs against Australia in 1964.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz five-fer spins Bangladesh into lead

MIRPUR: Mehidy Hasan Miraz weaved spin magic as Bangladesh bowled out Pakistan for 386 in the final session on day three of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.

Bad light caused early stumps on day three as Bangladesh were 7-0 in 1.5 overs.

After tea, Pakistan managed to add only 37 to their total and lost four wickets after the rain-delayed post-tea session. The lower order collapse handed Bangladesh a 27-run lead, largely due to reckless shot selection by Pakistan batters.

The visitors resumed their innings on 349-6 with Noman Ali joining Salman Ali Agha. However, Nahid Rana ended the latter’s resistance, who had him caught at slip. Agha made 58 with the aid of a six and a four.

Noman and Shaheen added 19 to reduce the deficit, but Mehidy removed both batters in a short span to put Bangladesh on top position.

Hasan Ali (6) was the last batter to fall, attempting a slog against Taijul Islam and ended up losing his wicket.

Mehidy starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 5-102. Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam picked up two while Nahid Rana managed one.

Earlier, Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan’s 119-run partnership took Pakistan out of trouble against Bangladesh by Tea.

Pakistan were 349-6 in the second session, still trailing by 64 runs. Agha remained unbeaten on 55 while Mohammad Rizwan gave his wicket away on the stroke of session end.  The right-hander made 59 off 79, hitting eight boundaries before getting caught at mid-off.

The duo launched Pakistan’s recovery after Mehidy Hasan Miraz ran through the middle-order. Both batters came in when the side was in deep trouble at 230-5.

For Bangladesh, Miraz remained the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets, while Taijul Islam also chipped in with one wicket.

At lunch, Pakistan were in a hole as Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck thrice to jolt the visitors’ progress.

In reply to Bangladesh 413, Pakistan resumed on 179-1 with debutants Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazam batting steadily. However, Taskin Ahmed provided the home side a much-needed breakthrough in the form of Azan’s wicket.

The left-hander made 104 with the aid of 14 fours. Soon after, skipper Shan Masood went back, getting dismissed for nine. The woes were further compounded when Saud Shakeel (0) and Abdullah Fazal (60) perished, leaving Pakistan at 230-5.

After quick wickets, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha came to the fore, arresting the slide with an unbroken 21-run partnership at lunch.

Azan Awais enters record books with century on Test debut

MIRPUR: Pakistan opening batter Azan Awais on Sunday entered an elite list of players after scoring a century on his Test debut. 

The left-hander achieved the feat in the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. The 21-year-old brought up his century with a single in the 51st over of Pakistan’s innings.

The Sialkot-born batter resumed his innings from an overnight score of 85 on day two.

With this achievement, Azan became the 14th Pakistani player to reach the triple-figure mark on Test debut, joining a list that includes several notable players.

Khalid Ibadulla remained the first player to achieve a milestone on debut in the longest format for Pakistan, while Yasir Hameed remains the only player on the list to score a century in both innings of a debut Test.

Overall, he is the 120th batter in the history of Test cricket to score a century on debut in the longer format of the game.
