Zalmi hold nerve to claim Super Over victory against Qalandars

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi hung on for a Super Over victory over Lahore Qalandars in a dramatic finish to the last group match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7, here at Gaddafi Stadium.

Zalmi’s skipper Wahab Riaz led from the front and kept his nerve calm to bowl a magnificent super over. The left-arm pacer conceded only five runs and set Zalmi to chase a paltry total.

Later, Shoaib Malik smashed two consecutive boundaries on the first two balls of Shaheen Shah Afridi and took his side over the line comfortably in the end.

Earlier in the run chase, the Qalandars finished exactly at 158 in the allotted 20 overs, thanks to their skipper Shaheen, who scored a much-needed 39 runs off 20 balls, down the order to save the match for his side.

The left-handed batter smashed two boundaries and four sixes in the course of his stunning knock. Apart from Shaheen, Mohammad Hafeez chipped in with his valuable 49 off 44 balls, laced with three boundaries and a six while the rest of the batters could not contribute significantly in the run chase.

For the Zalmi, Wahab and Arshad Iqbal bagged two wickets each, while Amad Butt, Mohammad Umar, Khalid Usman, and Malik struck out a batter each.

After opting to bat first, the Zalmi managed to set a 159-runs target for the home side, thanks to the veteran Malik, who played a gritty knock of 32 runs.

Coming out to bat, the Zalmi’s openers Mohammad Haris and Hazratullah Zazai failed to provide a decent start to the side as the Qalandars’ speedster Haris Rauf broke the opening partnership in the second over; dismissing Haris for a mere six.

Zazai then put on a brief partnership with returning Kamran Akmal but the Afghan explosive batter could not get going for long as he walked back to the pavilion in the sixth over; scoring 20. Soon after, Kamran also perished as the debutant Fawad Ahmed castled him for 18.

Malik and Haider Ali then looked to rebuild the innings for the men in yellow. The pair appeared solid and recorded a magnificent 58-runs partnership but could not extend their stay at the crease till the death overs. Malik perished in the 14th while Haider made his way back in the 15th over.

In his 32-runs knock, Malik faced 28 deliveries and smashed one boundary and a six. Haider, on the other hand, followed back with his 25 off 22 balls, laced with two boundaries and a six.

Following their departure, the rest of the batters remained unable to go big in the death overs and as a result, the Zalmi finished at 158-7 in the allotted 20 overs. Hussain Talat remained unbeaten for his 17, while Khalid Usman also chipped in with his 11-ball 19.

For the Qalandars, Fawad bagged two wickets, while Shaheen, Haris, Mohammad Hafeez, and David Wiese made one scalp each.

PSL 7: Excitement builds up as two in-form teams lock horns in last group match

LAHORE: Two in-form teams of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7 – Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi, will lock horns today in the last league match, here at Gaddafi Stadium.

The two teams, which have already booked their place in the play-offs of the PSL 7, will be looking to take on each other before the league enters the final stage.

The Qalandars have enjoyed a delightful run throughout the marquee event as the side managed to win six out of their nine matches. The home side also broke the undefeated streak of the table-toppers Multan Sultans, which lost only one out of their 10 matches.

The Qalandars heavily rely on their in-form batter and the leading run-scorer of the PSL 7 – Fakhar Zaman, who is in red-hot form in this year’s mega event. However, Harry Brook’s century in their last match against Islamabad United proved that their middle-order can also chip in quite well.

The side is heavily laced with firepower in the bowling department; having the services of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Zaman Khan. Their leading spinner Rashid Khan, however, has bid farewell to the PSL 7; owing to his national duty.

Former PSL winners Zalmi, on the other hand, are peaking just at the right time in the PSL 7 after an unpleasant start in the early stages. The team won their last three games, allowing them to climb up to the third place from fifth place and qualify for the play-offs.

Zalmi’s young opening batter Mohammad Haris has been scoring crucial suns for the team for the last few matches now will be a valuable asset for the team. Veteran cricketer Shoaib Malik and Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting have also progressed well in the mega event; scoring valuable runs down the order for the team.

The 2017 champions also have a decent bowling attack – led by the skipper Wahab Riaz himself. Whereas, young pacer – Mohammad Umar has been decent with the ball in his last challenge, while Liam Livingstone and Usman Qadir can also be handy with the ball.

Rizwan stands out for Sultans as they beat United by six wickets

LAHORE: Mohammad Rizwan scored a gritty half-century to help Multan Sultans beat Islamabad United by six wickets and strengthen their top position in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7.

Set to chase a paltry 106, the table-toppers have had an unwanted start as the side lost four wickets for a mere 43.

Sultans’ skipper Rizwan alongside David Willey, however, then anchored the run chase with an unbeaten 68-runs partnership. Willey played a sensible knock of 28 runs off 32 balls, while Rizwan top-scored with his magnificent 51 off 42 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and a six off the final delivery of the match.

For the United, Liam Dawson provided a glimmer of hope; taking three quick wickets, while Zahid Mahmood picked up a wicket on his debut for the United.

After opting to bat first, the United batters could only manage to post 105/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Coming out to bat, the United’s openers  Nasir Nawaz and Mohammad Huraira failed to provide a delightful start to their side as Asif Afridi managed to break the opening pair in the third over and Huraira departed after scoring a mere two.

Following his departure, the side kept losing wickets at an alarming rate and went a little too defensive in the proceedings. None of the United batters could contribute significantly to pull their side out of the danger.

English batter Dawson chipped in a bit with his brief cameo of 22 runs off just 11 balls, while Mohammad Musa, down the order, top-scored for the side with an unbeaten 26 off 21 deliveries; smashing two boundaries and as many sixes.

For the Sultans, Asif and Imran Tahir bagged two wickets each, while Willey, Shahnawaz Dahani, and Tim David struck out a batter each.

Despite a humiliating defeat and having the same number of points as Quetta Gladiators, the United are through to the PSL 7 play-offs, thanks to a better net run rate.

Set to chase 167, the Kings fell short of 23 runs; handing a comprehensive victory by 23 runs to the Gladiators.

Kings’ openers – Babar Azam and Joe Clarke provided a solid start to the side; putting on a brilliant 87-runs partnership before Babar walked back to the pavilion in the 11th over. The top-ranked T20I batter scored 36 off 34 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, Sharjeel Khan joined Clarke in the middle and started to sail the ball all over the park but could not continue for long as he departed after scoring a quickfire 16 off just seven deliveries.

Following Sharjeel’s departure, the side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate as their top-scorer Clarke also perished after scoring 52 off 39 balls; smashing four boundaries and two sixes. As a result, the side finished at 143-8 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the Gladiators, Khurram starred; taking four wickets, while Naseem claimed two. Mohammad Irfan and Ashir Qureshi, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

After opting to bat first against the Kings, the Gladiators finished their first innings at 166-4 in the allotted 20 overs.

Coming out to bat, the Gladiators’ openers Jason Roy and Will Smeed failed to provide a delightful start to their side as Usman Shinwari managed to break the opening pair in the third over as Smeed departed after scoring 10.

With the side at 21-1 in three overs, Roy and James Vince provided an anchored partnership to settle things down for the Gladiators. The pair recorded a brilliant 90-runs partnership but remained a touch slow in the proceedings.

Vince, who was struggling to get going, looked to accelerate his innings but fell short to Lewis Gregory in the 13th over. The right-handed batter could score 29 off 24 balls with the help of three boundaries and a six.

His countryman, Roy on the other hand, kept going and went on to score his half-century while the side soon after lost another wicket as Umar Akmal walked back to the pavilion after scoring a mere two.

Kings’ bowlers then delivered tight bowling in the death overs as Roy and his newly joined partner Iftikhar Ahmed remained unable to go big and bolster the score. In the 19th over, Roy also made his way back to the pavilion after scoring 82 off 64 balls, laced with 11 boundaries, while Iftikhar remained unbeaten with his 21.

For the Kings, Imad Wasim, Mir Hamza, Gregory, and Shinwari bagged one wicket apiece.

‘Our PSL payments never got late’ Afridi defends PCB

KARACHI: Star all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi came in defense of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) against James Faulkner’s late payment allegations on Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7’s management.

Taking to Twitter, Afridi said Faulkner made ‘baseless allegations’ and tried to taint Pakistan’s brand.

“Disappointed with James Faulkner comments who reciprocated Pakistan’s hospitality & arrangements by leveling baseless allegations. We all have been treated with respect & never ever our payments have been delayed. No one should be allowed to taint Pakistan, Pakistan cricket, and the HBL PSL brand,” he wrote.

On early Saturday, Faulkner left for Australia citing late payments by the PSL 7 management. The Australian cricketer was due to complete the whole season for Quetta Gladiators. He reportedly destroyed the hotel’s property and also misbehaved with the airport staff before leaving.

Taking action against the cricketer, PCB banned him from future PSL events.

‘Faulkner will not be drafted in PSL in future’ PCB

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Quetta Gladiators have refuted baseless allegations regarding payments made by Australian cricketer James Faulkner.

In a press release, PCB explained the payment method and how many payments were made to Faulkner.

  • In December 2021, Mr James Faulkner’s agent confirmed the United Kingdom bank details to which his fee payments should be transferred. This was noted for action.

• In January 2022, for reasons best known to Mr Faulkner, his agent sent revised banking details of Mr Faulkner’s onshore account in Australia. However, the contracted 70 per cent of Mr Faulkner’s fee payment was transferred to his offshore UK bank account. The receipt of this payment was acknowledged by Mr Faulkner.

• Accordingly, payments due to Mr Faulkner as per his contract are fully up to date.

• The remaining 30 per cent of his contractual payment only becomes due 40 days after the completion of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022, which now remains a matter to be reviewed in line with his contract.

• In spite of the money being transferred and received in his account, Mr Faulkner continued to insist that a second duplicate payment of the same amount be made to his account in Australia. This meant Mr Faulkner would have been paid twice.

• He further threatened and refused to participate in his side’s match against Multan Sultans on Friday afternoon until his money demands were met.

• The PCB, as a responsible organisation, engaged with Mr Faulkner early Friday afternoon in an attempt to reason with him. Despite his reprehensible and insulting behavior during the conversation, Mr Faulkner was assured that all his grievances would be addressed. He refused to reconsider his decision to take the field in a crucial match for his side, let his team down and demanded that his travel arrangements be immediately made.

• During this time, the PCB was also in constant contact with his agent, who was regretful and apologetic.

• Prior to his departure on Saturday morning, Mr Faulkner caused deliberate damage to the hotel property and as a result had to pay damages to the hotel management. The PCB later also received reports and complaints from the immigration authorities that Mr Faulkner had acted inappropriately and abusively at the airport.

Taking action against the cricketer, PCB banned him from future PSL events.

Sultans crush Gladiators by biggest 117-margin in PSL’s history

LAHORE: Multan Sultans’ bowlers displayed combined effort after batters posted the second-highest Pakistan Super League (PSL) score; assisting their side to defeat Quetta Gladiators by the biggest runs margin of 117 runs in the league’s history.

Set to chase a mammoth 246 in the 25th match of the ongoing PSL 7, the Gladiators’ failed completely and could only manage to score 128; handing the biggest victory margin to the Sultans.

After starting poorly, the side kept losing wickets at a consistent rate in the run chase. Jason Roy and Umar Akmal, however, resisted a bit, while the rest of the batters remained clueless in front of Sultans’ bowling attack.

Roy scored a quick 38 top of the order, while Umar top-scored for his side with a brilliant 50 off just 23 balls; hitting two boundaries and six sixes.

Umar’s departure in the 10th over initiated another collapse and the Gladiators bowled out for a mere 128. The skipper – Sarfaraz Ahmed remained unbeaten with his 17.

For the Sultans, Asif Afridi, David Willey, Shahnawaz Dahani, and Khushdil Shah took two wickets each, while Imran Tahir made one scalp.

After opting to bat, Sultans set a huge target of 246 for the Gladiators, thanks to their skipper – Mohammad Rizwan and the top-order batter Rilee Rossouw, who played stunning knocks to bolster the side in the closing overs.

Earlier, Sultans’ openers – Rizwan and Shan Masood set the tone for the side; putting on a brilliant century-partnership for the first wicket. The duo appeared solid as both scored astonishing half-centuries.

Masood walked back to the pavilion in the 12th over after scoring 57 off 38 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six, while Rizwan stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Following Masood’s departure, Rossouw stood up for his team and played a blinder. The left-handed batter scored a quickfire 71 off a mere 26 balls; smashing nine boundaries and four sixes before falling short to Naseem Shah in the 19th over.

Rizwan, on the other hand, top-scored with his unbeaten 83 runs off just 54 balls with the help of 10 boundaries including three sixes.

For the Gladiators, the bowlers remained off-colour as they conceded a lot of runs and leaked 24 runs as extras. Returning pacer Mohammad Irfan, Ghulam Mudassar, and Naseem managed to make one scalp each.
