Gladiators to lock horns with table-toppers Sultans in a must-win game

LAHORE: In the 25th match of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7, the fifth-ranked Quetta Gladiators will lock horns with the table-toppers Multan Sultans in a do or die match.

On the double-header Friday, the Gladiators will be locking horns with the table-toppers of the ongoing PSL 7 – Sultans, in a must-win match as a defeat, may result in the elimination for the Gladiators.

The Gladiators, who suffered a frustrating defeat against Peshawar Zalmi in their last outing will be looking to regain their lost momentum. The 2019 champions heavily rely on their top order which features the likes of Jason Roy, James Vince, Will Smeed and in-form Ahsan Ali.

The side’s top-order, however, failed in their last fixture against Zalmi and only Smeed stood up for his team with a gritty knock.

The Gladiators’ middle-order also struggled to get going against Zalmi’s bowling attack and the side will be hoping to get back to the rhythm before the all-important face-off with the Sultans.

Sultans, on the other hand, are enjoying an astonishing run in the mega event. They are currently leading the points table with seven victories out of the eight matches.

Just like the Gladiators, the Sultans too rely on their openers which includes the in-form Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood.

The side, however, also possesses the firepower in their middle-order as Tim David, Khushdil Shah, and Rilee Rossouw can turn things around with their berserk hitting.

In the bowling department, the side has the services of the young Shahnawaz Dahani, alongside Rumman Raees, Blessing Muzarabani, and the veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

A victory against the Gladiators will help the Sultans to strengthen their top position on the points table as Lahore Qalandars close in with 10 points.

Azam’s heroics go in vain as Zalmi manage to beat United by 10 runs

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi’s skipper – Wahab Riaz held his nerve calm to dismiss the hero of Islamabad United Azam Khan in the 19th over; assisting his side to beat the latter by 10 runs in the 24th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7.

Set to chase 207, the United was peaking until the 19th over as the Zalmi skipper took the all-important wicket of Azam to turn the fortune in his side’s favour.

Came out to chase a mammoth, the United opener – Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided an astonishing start to his side. He scored a quickfire 46 off 19 balls with the help of five sixes and three boundaries.

His opening partner Mubasir Khan, however, contrasting but anchored innings as the side lost quick wickets as the number three batter Danish Aziz bagged a duck.

Mubasir too soon departed in the ninth over after scoring 21; causing his side to slip to 89-3. Following his dismissal, Azam stood up for his team and sailed the ball around the park.

The right-handed explosive batter appeared determined of guiding his side to the finishing but faltered in the 19th over; handing an easy catch to Ben Cutting at long-on boundary off Wahab’s length delivery.

The young batter smashed a terrific 85 off 45 balls, laced with six boundaries and seven sixes. The rest of the United batters, on the other hand, could not manage to contribute significantly and as a result, the side fell short of 10 runs; scoring 196/7 in the allotted overs.

For Zalmi, Salman Irshad bagged three wickets, while Wahab claimed two. Hussain Talat and Cutting, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

After opting to bat first, Zalmi’s opener – Mohammad Haris put on a show with his blistering knock. The young batter provided a flying start to his side; scoring his half-century off just 18 balls.

Haris’ heroics helped Zalmi amass the hundred in just eighth over. His opening partner from Afghanistan – Hazratullah Zazai, however, remained off-colour as he managed to score 13 on 12 balls.

Haris, on the other hand, stood firm and kept ticking the scoreboard. He scored a quickfire 70 off just 32 balls with the help of seven boundaries and five sixes before walking back to the pavilion in the 10th over.

Following his departure, the veteran Shoaib Malik and Yasir Khan scored crucial runs for the team. Yasir scored a quick 35 off 24 balls, while Malik’s astonishing 38-runs knock came for just 23 balls. The veteran smashed two boundaries and as many sixes in the course of his brilliant inning.

With their departure, the side then began to lose wickets at a consistent rate and in the end, was restricted to 206/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the United, Faheem starred; taking three wickets, while Waqas bagged two. Merchant de Lange, Liam Dawson, and Zahir Khan made one scalp each.

Following this victory, the Zalmi has now overtaken the United at the third position in the PSL 7 points table.

Match referee Ali Naqvi: “Such type of inappropriate gestures have no space in this great sport. The players need to always understand and remember their on and off the field responsibilities as they are role models and behaviour like this sends out a wrong message to the younger generation of cricketers. The HBL PSL 2022 is being played in good, positive spirits and I would like to see the players continue to fight hard inside the field of play but at the same time to remain within the parameters of the spirit of the game.”

Usman takes three as Zalmi beat Gladiators by 24 runs

LAHORE: Quetta Gladiators’ Will Smeed fought hard with his gritty 99 but Usman Qadir’s astonishing spell assisted Peshawar Zalmi to beat Gladiators by 24 runs in the 22nd match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7.

Set to chase 186, Gladiators batters failed to get going. The opener Smeed, however, retaliated till the end with his valiant 99 off 60 balls, laced with 12 boundaries and three sixes.

Despite his heroic innings, the Gladiators could not manage to pull off the victory as the 20-years-old received no support from the other end. Gladiators’ skipper – Sarfaraz Ahmed remained the second top-scorer after Smeed; scoring a mere 25 off 21 balls.

For the Zalmi, Usman starred; taking three wickets, while Salman Irshad took two. Liam Livingstone, Wahab Riaz, and Hussain Talat struck out a batter each.

Batting first, the Zalmi managed to post 185/7 in the allotted 20 overs, thanks to the half-centuries from Shoaib Malik and Hussain Talat.

The Zalmi started the proceedings poorly as Naseem Shah removed their explosive batters – Hazratullah Zazai and Liam Livingstone cheaply in his first over.

With the side stranded at 6-2 in the second over, experienced batter Shoaib anchored the innings with Mohammad Haris; putting on a magnificent 52-runs partnership before the young batter perished after scoring a brilliant 29 off 17 balls, laced with six boundaries.

Malik then recorded another brilliant partnership with Talat and anchored the innings for the Zalmi. The pair batted brilliantly as both the batters went on smash half-centuries.

Talat scored 51 off 33, while Malik top-scored with 58 off 41 deliveries; smashing eight boundaries.

In the 19th over, Ben Cutting went hard at Sohail Tanvir; smashing four sixes to the left-arm pacer. Cutting’s astonishing cameo of 36 runs off just 14 deliveries with the help of four sixes and a boundary bolstered the side’s score.

For the Gladiators, Naseem Shah shone; taking four wickets, while Khurram Shehzad, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Ghulam Mudassar struck out a batter each.

Following this victory, Zalmi have now claimed the fourth position in the PSL 7 points table, while the Gladiators have been demoted to the fifth spot.
