LAHORE: Sikandar Raza played a fighting 71-run knock to recover Lahore Qalandars to a commendable total of 148 before bowlers powered the home side to a convincing 17-run victory over rock-bottom Quetta Gladiators in the 18th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight.

Set to chase a modest 149, the Gladiators fell 17 runs short of sealing a much-needed victory in the ongoing extravaganza and moved to the verge of an early exit from the extravaganza.

Earlier in the pursuit, the Gladiators’ openers Will Smeed and young Yasir Khan scripted a flying start to their side as the pair raised 50 runs within the power-play before Haris Rauf provided a much-needed breakthrough to the Qalandars as he dismissed the latter on 14.

Yasir’s dismissal triggered a match-defining collapse which consequently caused the Gladiators to slip to 80/5 in the 14th over.

Gladiators’ skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed then looked to anchor the run chase with a brief 25-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Odean Smith (11) but remained a touch slow in the process; causing the required run rate to climb sharply.

The Gladiators, in dire need of big hits, failed to charge against a tight bowling display from Qalandars in the death overs and eventually ended up 17 runs short.

Gladiators’ captain Sarfaraz remained not out with his cautious 27 off 28, while Will Smeed top-scored for the side with 32 off 25 balls, hitting six boundaries.

Haris led the bowling attack for the Qalandars with 3/22 followed by Rashid Khan with 2/14, while David Wiese made one scalp.

Put into bat first, the Qalandars managed to raise 147 before bundling out in the final over at the back of a scintillating 71-run knock by Raza.

Earlier, the home side got off to a poor start as the side lost seven wickets for just 50 runs in the first 10 overs.

With their side in heaps of trouble, Raza stitched a fighting seventh-wicket partnership with Rashid Khan and launched a counter-attack on the Gladiators’ bowlers as the pair added 69 runs in just 39 deliveries.

Rashid supported Raza brilliantly amid their glorious stand before Odean Smith got rid of him in the 16th over. He could score 21 off 20, hitting one boundary and a six.

Naseem Shah then dismissed Haris Rauf for a duck in the next over which resulted in the hosts slipping to 125/9.

Despite nine down, Raza carried on his baton charge on the Gladiators as he put on a vital 15-run partnership with Zaman Khan before the latter perished in the final over for a duck.

Raza remained unbeaten with his fighting knock and top-scored for Qalandars with 71 off just 34 deliveries, laced up with eight boundaries and three sixes.

Mohammad Nawaz and Naveen-ul-Haq led the Gladiators’ bowling attack with two wickets each, while Smith, Umaid Asif and Naseem struck out a batter each.

LAHORE: Fakhar Zaman and Kamran Ghulam batted brilliantly; both scoring half-centuries as Lahore Qalandars defeated Quetta Gladiators by eight wickets in the 20th match of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7.

Set to chase a mere 142, Qalandars’ batters sealed a comfortable victory in the 18th over with eight wickets to spare.

The openers – Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar provided a decent start to the side; putting on an important 41-runs partnership. Shafique, however, who was struggling to get going, departed in the sixth over after scoring 19 off 20 balls.

Fakhar, on the other hand, starred again with his bat and went on to smash his fifth half-century of PSL 7. He scored an astonishing 53 off just 42 balls, laced with six boundaries.

Kamran too was handy with the bat as the right-handed batter also chipped in with his half-century. He scored an unbeaten 55 off 39 balls; smashing four boundaries and a six.

The duo of Fakhar and Kamran recorded a match-winning 77-runs partnership for the second wicket; anchoring their side in the run chase.

For the Gladiators, Ghulam Mudassar and Noor Ahmad managed to pick one wicket each.

Qalandars’ skipper – Shaheen Afridi after putting the Gladiators to bat first, laid waste to the opposition in his first over as the left-arm pacer removed the dangerous Jason Roy and James Vince in two consecutive deliveries; pushing the Gladiators on the back foot.

Following the early trouble, Gladiators’ skipper – Sarfaraz Ahmed looked to anchor the innings alongside Ahsan Ali but, he too perished in the fourth over getting run-out for 12.

Ahsan too dismissed briefly as Rashid Khan cleaned him up for eight in the fifth over and as a result, the Gladiators lost their first four wickets for a mere 25.

Gladiators’ returning batter – Umar Akmal then intended to fight back; scoring 25 off just 19 balls, laced with three boundaries and a six. But, his stay at the crease remained brief as he miscued one of David Wiese’s delivery.

Following this, Iftikhar Ahmed stood up for his team and scored a valiant half-century. He scored 52 off just 39 balls; smashing two boundaries and three sixes before falling victim to Haris Rauf.

With some small contribution from the tailenders, the side managed to finish at 141 in the allotted 20 overs; handing an easy 142-runs target for the home side.

For Qalandars, Shaheen and Wiese bagged two wickets each, while Haris and Rashid made one scalp apiece.

KARACHI: Jason Roy caught major limelight by scoring his maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL) century and helped Quetta Gladiators win their second match in the league by defeating Lahore Qalandars by seven wickets. 

Roy, who played just his first match in PSL 7, scored second fastest century of PSL. His powerful 116 runs knock was the fourth highest individual score in event’s history. The right-handed batter smashed eight maximums and 11 boundaries to set the tone for Gladiators to chase 205 runs in 19.3 overs.

James Vince (49*) and Mohammad Nawaz (25*) were the other prominent contributors from Gladiators. Vince struck five boundaries whereas Nawaz pulled off two sixes and a boundary.

For Qalandars, Haris Rauf, Kamran Ghulam and David Wiese bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, Fakhar Zaman scored a brilliant half-century up the order followed by Harry Brook’s late onslaught guided Qalandars to post 204-5 in the allotted 20 overs in 15th match.

Batting first, Fakhar and Abdullah Shafique provided a solid start to the side; putting up a decent 61-runs partnership before Abdullah walked back to the pavilion, scoring 32 off 27 deliveries.

Fakhar, on the other hand, kept the scoreboard ticking and scored magnificent half-century. Ghulam Mudassar, however, managed to dismiss the left-hander in the 17th over. He scored 70 off just 45 deliveries, laced with three boundaries and as many sixes.

Later, Brook’s onslaught in the 19th over bolstered Qalandars’ score. He remained unbeaten with his quickfire 41 off just 17 balls; smashing four boundaries and two sixes.

For the Gladiators, Mudassar bagged two wickets, while Iftikhar Ahmed and Luke Wood claimed a wicket apiece.

In the last match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7 Karachi-leg, Quetta Gladiators will be taking on Lahore Qalandars in pursuit of the second victory of the ongoing mega event.

So far in the marquee event, the PSL 2019 champions have been off-colour, having played four matches and only winning once. The Gladiators began their season with a loss to Peshawar Zalmi but quickly rebounded by defeating Karachi Kings. However, their comeback was short-lived, as the team lost their next two matches, including a thriller against Multan Sultans.

Sarfaraz XI are in dire need of the second victory of the PSL 7 before the league transfers to Lahore from today.

The Gladiators, who are currently struggling to get going will now have the services of the English explosive opener – Jason Roy, who is available for selection for tonight’s clash after the completion of his quarantine period, while Shahid Afridi has also participated in the squad’s last practice session after demanding rest from the management.

The Qalandars, on the other hand, have had a strong start to the season, winning three of their four games thus far, with the Sultans being the only team they have lost to.

The side will rely significantly on their bowling line-up, which includes Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan, and Rashid Khan, while the side also possesses the firepower with the bat, which include the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid.
