Salman Ali Agha breaks world record, surpasses Dravid, Yousuf, Dhoni

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan T20I captain Salman Ali Agha has surpassed legends like Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Mohammad Yousuf to set a world record for playing the most international matches in a single calendar year.

Agha achieved the milestone during Pakistan’s 69-run victory over Zimbabwe in the T20I tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Pakistan have played a total of 54 international matches in 2025 so far, the most by any team this year, with the West Indies being next–best with 45 matches.

Agha, who is Pakistan’s mainstay across formats, is the only player to feature in all of these games this year.

Remarkably, this tally also equals Pakistan’s record for most matches in a calendar year, first set in 2013.

Agha, by featuring in 54 matches, eclipsed the previous joint record of 53 appearances held by Dravid (1999), Yousuf (2000), and Dhoni (2007).

The feat of surpassing 50 international matches in a single year is rare, first achieved by Sachin Tendulkar in 1997, and more recently by New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who played 51 games in 2023.

  • Salman Ali Agha (Pakistan) – 54, 2025

On the first ball of the next over, he pushed the ball to the covers to topple Jacques Kallis’ record in Test cricket. In doing so, he became the third-highest run scorer in the longest form of the game.

WATCH: Rahul Dravid loses his cool after auto driver hits his car

Former Indian cricketer and coach Rahul Dravid lost his cool after being involved in a minor car accident with a goods auto in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening.

Dravid who is known for his composed manner, was observed having a serious conversation on Cunningham Road when the auto driver allegedly rammed into Dravid’s car from behind while it was stuck in traffic.

A video of the incident, captured by a passerby, shows a visibly upset Dravid arguing with the driver in Kannada. Fortunately, both parties appeared to be unhurt in the video.

Dravid was seen stepping out of his car to assess the damage before taking down the driver’s contact number and leaving the scene.

According to police sources, the issue was likely resolved on-site. The incident has sparked a meme-fest on social media, with many users referencing a popular credit company ad featuring Dravid.

The former captain is currently spending time at home in Bengaluru before resuming his duties as the coach of the Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.

Rahul Dravid is often in the news with his casual and cheeky moments off the cricket ground. Earlier, the former Indian coach revealed that he is job hunting after helping India clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 title.

Several hailed Rahul Dravid for his exceptional coaching abilities that helped the Rohit Sharma-led side’s triumph in the tournament.

Following the final, Dravid was asked about his future after his stint as the coach of the Indian cricket team.

Dravid came up with a hilarious answer, saying that he will be jobless and would love to work if given an opportunity.

“I will be. Next week, life will be the same for me. I will be unemployed, that will be the only difference. I am unemployed next week. Any offers?” he quipped.

Here’s why Rahul Dravid decline extra bonus after T20 World Cup glory

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid, in a heartwarming gesture, turned down an additional 25 million Indian Rupees (INR) bonus following the team’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 glory.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a total prize money of 1250 million (125 crore) for the World Cup-winning team, including support staff.

The bonus was supposed to be broken down into the players and Dravid getting prize money of 50 million each while batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, were set to receive 25 million each as the bonus.

However, according to the Indian media, Rahul Dravid rejected the additional bonus and informed the cricket board that he would only accept 25 million as the bonus.

“Rahul wanted the same bonus money ( ₹2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source said.

As per the original distribution formula of the BCCI, all the playing members of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 squad and Dravid were supposed to get a 50 million bonus while the rest of the support staff were to get 25 million as a token of appreciation.

Whereas, the selectors and all the travelling reserves of the squad were to receive a 10 million INR bonus from the cricket board.

For the unversed, BCCI Honourary Secretary Jay Shah and President Roger Binny gave the prize money to the winning team following their victory parade in Mumbai on July 4.

Rohit Sharma pens heartfelt note for Rahul Dravid

India captain Rohit Sharma wrote a heartfelt note, paying tribute to the outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid after they led the country to their second T20 World Cup title.

The successful partnership of Sharma-Dravid steered India to play finals in all three formats — the World Test Championship in 2023, the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The T20 World Cup-winning captain took to his Instagram account and penned down an emotional post, expressing his gratitude and honour for being able to work with the legendary batter.

“Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I’m not sure I ever will so here’s my attempt,” Sharma posted.

“Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you.

“That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I’m lucky to get to call you that too,” Rohit captioned the post.

“This was the only thing missing from your arsenal and I’m so happy that we got to achieve it together. Rahul bhai it has been an absolute privilege to get to call you my confidant, my coach and my friend.”

Rohit Sharma had previously unsuccessfully tried to convince Rahul Dravid to stay on as head coach before the T20 World Cup.

“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, working with him,” Sharma told reporters before their opening game against Ireland.

“I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well.”

Meanwhile, the right-handed batter along with star batter Virat Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja have announced retirement from the T20I cricket following their World Cup victory.

T20 World Cup 2024: India’s Dravid hoping for third time lucky

India head coach Rahul Dravid hoping his team will be third time lucky as they head into the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa.

The combination of coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma experienced the double disappointment last year of defeat in the World Test Championship final and the 50-over World Cup — losing both to Australia.

India which more than any other popularized the shortest form with the hugely successful Indian Premier League now stands on the brink of their second T20 World Cup title and first since the inaugural edition in 2007.

Dravid, who is standing down as coach after this tournament, prefers to view the two runners-up spots as a positive sign of the team’s consistency across formats.

“I think it’s good that we are consistent and playing good cricket. For many years, especially in the last year, being number one in all three formats, playing in the finals, it gives a lot of credit to the boys who are Test cricketers, who are our one-day players and also our T20 players.

“Indian cricket has shown a lot of consistency and it is a very happy thing. And if we play well and if we have the rub of the green, then we will win,” he said.

The 50-over World Cup defeat was particularly painful with the expectant home crowd in Ahmedabad expecting a celebration but witnessing Australia win with seven overs to spare.

Rahul Dravid doesn’t believe there is a need to approach Saturday’s game at Kensington Oval any differently than for last year’s ODI defeat however.

“I thought we were very well prepared in that final in Ahmedabad as well. We had done all the things, we had ticked all the boxes and, on the day, the other team played better and that’s part of the sport,” he said.

“The other team that is coming there to play has also obviously reached the final, because they’re a good team and they’re playing very good cricket as well. So, they have as much right to win it as we do. But we hope that we will play better cricket on the day,” he added.

South Africa certainly fit that description — like India they head into the final unbeaten throughout the entire tournament.

South Africa are looking for their first World Cup title having never managed to clinch in either format since their return to international cricket in 1991.

But Dravid doesn’t think that pressure of South Africa’s long wait, which was punctuated only by a Champions Trophy win in 1998, will add extra pressure.

“It’s not that the same players have been playing since 1991. Many players have come and gone. I don’t think that really matters. I can’t speak for any of them. I don’t think players go in keeping the baggage of the past and what has happened in the past,” he said.

“Every day is a fresh day. Players are very good at moving on from things, of recognising things. So yes, I think just as we will move on from Ahmedabad, I’m sure they will not be thinking about history and it will be a fresh day,” he said.

The surface in Barbados should be one of the more batting-friendly surfaces in what has been a low-scoring tournament and Rahul Dravid expects an entertaining spectacle.

“Two good teams, two teams I think that everyone will agree that probably the top two teams in this tournament played the best cricket I think in this tournament, both South Africa and India.

“So, deserving finals for both the teams and hopefully it’s a great game of cricket and hopefully we fall on the right side,” he said.

Rohit Sharma opens up on urging Rahul Dravid to continue as India coach

India captain Rohit Sharma said on Tuesday that he had unsuccessfully tried to convince Rahul Dravid to stay on as head coach, hailing him as “a big role model.”

Dravid said ahead of India’s opening match at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland in New York on Wednesday that the tournament would be his last act as the head coach.

Dravid’s contract runs out at the end of the month and he will not reapply for the job, after almost three years in charge.

“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, working with him,” Rohit, who has played under and with Dravid for India, told reporters on the eve of the Ireland game.

He added: “I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well.

“I’ve personally enjoyed my time with him. I’m sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It’s been great working with him.”

India have failed to win a global trophy under Dravid but Rohit was nevertheless full of praise for the 51-year-old former national skipper.

“Such a big role model for all of us,” Rohit Sharma said. “Growing up we watched him play and we know what he’s achieved personally as a player and what he’s done for the team over the years.”

He added: “He’s shown a lot of great determination throughout his career, and that’s something that when he came here as a coach, I wanted to learn from him. It’s been very fruitful.”

Rahul Dravid took over the team from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

This year’s edition in the United States and West Indies is his last chance to end India’s search for major international silverware that stretches back to 2013.

Dravid oversaw runs to the finals of both the World Test Championship and their home 50-over World Cup last year, but they came up short against Australia each time.

Rahul Dravid to bow out as India coach after T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK: Rahul Dravid said on Monday that he will leave his post as head coach of Team India at the end of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after almost three years in charge.

Dravid’s contract runs out at the end of the month and he will not re-apply for the job, which has been advertised by India’s governing cricket body, the BCCI, since last month.

“It is going to be the last one that I am in charge of,” the 51-year-old told reporters ahead of India’s opening match against Ireland in New York on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, the kind of schedules and where I find myself at this stage in my life, I don’t think I’ll be able to re-apply. I love doing the job. I’ve really enjoyed coaching India and I think it’s a truly special job to do.”

The former India captain took over the team from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and West Indies is his last chance to end the country’s global trophy drought, which stretches back to the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Dravid oversaw India’s runs to the finals of both the World Test Championship and their home 50-over World Cup last year, but they came up short against Australia each time.

“I enjoyed working with this team and it’s a great bunch of boys to work with,” Dravid said. “To be very honest, I think we’ve actually played really well in these tournaments.

“The World Test Championship is slightly different in terms of it’s not one tournament but a whole cycle, but playing extremely well in the cycle to get to the final there again.

“The 50-over World Cup we had a great run and went into the final. I think we’ve been right up there with some of the best teams.”

India have not won the T20 World Cup since its inaugural edition in 2007 and they have not lifted the one-day World Cup since 2011.

India is set to face Pakistan on June 9 and the tournament hosts the USA three days later in New York, before concluding their group fixtures against Canada in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 15.
