Tri-Series: Lamichhane stars as Nepal edge Scotland in low-scoring thriller

GLASGOW: Sandeep Lamichhane’s four-wicket haul helped Nepal beat Scotland by two wickets in a narrowly contested encounter in the third match of the tri-series here at Titwood on Tuesday.

Nepal chased down the meagre total of 98 runs on the fifth ball of the last over with two wickets to spare.

In pursuit of the target, Nepal lost their three wickets in the first seven overs, with the scorecard read 38-3.

However, opener Kushal Bhurtel stood firm until the 12th over despite wickets tumbling at the other end. He scored 30 off 35 balls with the help of four boundaries.

With 35 required off the last seven overs, Scotland’s bowlers made a comeback, taking crucial middle-order wickets.

The match eventually reached the last over with Nepal requiring four of six balls with three wickets in hand.

However, Safyaan Sharif bowled well with three singles on the first three balls, hence taking a wicket as well on the next delivery to give Scotland some hope.

But incoming batter Sandeep Lamichhane kept his head calm and ran for a single to secure Nepal with their first win in the tri-series.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Scotland were skittled for a meagre 97 runs in 19.4 overs.

The home team demonstrated a shambolic batting performance, losing half of their side inside the first five overs.

Nepal wreaked havoc with the new ball, first removing Mark Wyatt (1) and dangerous George Munsey (8). Liam Naylor was the next to go, after scoring just one, and Finlay McCreath followed him as he departed for two runs.

The only silver lining for Scotland was Michael Leask, who top-scored with a run-a-ball 46, laced with a six and four boundaries.

For Nepal, Player of the match Sandeep Lamichhane was the stand-out bowler, taking four wickets for just 11 runs in his quota of four overs, while Karan KC and Dipendra Singh Aireeb bagged two wickets each.

Manchester United great Denis Law passes away at 84

Manchester United and Scotland great Denis Law has died at the age of 84, sparking a wave of heartfelt tributes to a man known at Old Trafford as “The King”.

Law was a member of United’s European Cup-winning side under Matt Busby in 1968, when they became the first English club to lift the trophy, though he was injured for the final.

Capped 55 times by Scotland, he remains his country’s joint all-time leading scorer with 30 goals alongside Kenny Dalglish and is the only Scottish player to win the Ballon d’Or, in 1964.

Law — part of the famed “Holy Trinity” at Old Trafford alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best — was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia in 2021.

His death was confirmed on Friday “with a heavy heart” by his family, who said “he fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace”.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently,” the statement added. “We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Denis Law scored a total of 237 goals in 404 appearances during an 11-year spell at Old Trafford until 1973, which places him third behind Wayne Rooney and Charlton on United’s all-time list.

Manchester United said the club was mourning the loss of “the King of the Stretford End”.

“He will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players,” United added.

“The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.”

The Scotland national team called Law “a true great”, adding: “We will not see his likes again.”

Rooney paid tribute on X, posting: “Legend. Thoughts with all Denis’ family and friends.”

Former United and England captain Bryan Robson, who worked with Law in an ambassadorial role at Old Trafford, described the Scot as a “fantastic man”.

“We have lost one of football’s giants both as a player and a gentleman. It’s incredibly sad,” Robson wrote in a column in the Daily Mail.

“Denis was more than just a fantastic footballer, he was a fantastic man. So generous with his time and everything delivered with that great sense of humour of his.”

Law began his career at Huddersfield Town and also had two spells with Manchester City plus one with the Italian club Torino.

He was sold for a British record fee three times during his career.

During his time at United, Law won the FA Cup and English top-flight twice, in 1965 and 1967.

However, a cartilage injury forced him to miss the famous 4-1 victory over Benfica in the European Cup final at Wembley in 1968.

Law is the only player to have two statues dedicated to him at Old Trafford, one as part of the “United Trinity” alongside Best and Charlton.

Law’s other previous clubs added their tributes. City, the current English champions, said the “whole of Manchester” was mourning.

In a reply to United’s X post, the club said: “The whole of Manchester, including everyone at City, is mourning with you.”

Huddersfield called their former player an “immortal” of football while Torino said he was an “iconic figure” in the club’s history.

In the years after his retirement Denis Law worked as a broadcaster as well as for numerous charities.

Former Scotland international Joe Jordan said he was a “proper icon”. “Denis was a special player and to lose someone like him, I think will affect an awful lot of Manchester United fans,” Jordan told the BBC.

“A proper icon for his ability on the field to score goals but he had a special edge to him, not just as a player but as a person. He was a special player.”

Scotland’s Charlie Cassell registers best ODI bowling figures for a debutant

Scotland pace bowler Charlie Cassell has broken the record for the best bowling figures on debut in ODI cricket during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee against Oman.

Cassell claimed the spectacular bowling figures of 7-21, becoming the first bowler to take seven wickets on debut.

Previously, the record was held by South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who took 6-16 against Bangladesh back in 2016.

The right-arm fast bowler earned his place in Scotland’s squad as a replacement for Chris Sole, and he took full advantage of the opportunity, starting off his career with a wicket on his first ball.

Cassell trapped Zeeshan Maqsood lbw to become the 32nd player to take a wicket on the first ball of their ODI career in men’s cricket.

He bowled Ayaan Khan on the next delivery but missed the hat-trick. Nevertheless, he swiftly followed up by dismissing Khalid Kail on the fourth ball, finishing his debut over in international cricket with an impressive three wickets taken without conceding any runs.

Mehran Khan struck Cassell for two boundaries in two overs before the bowler got the last laugh in the subsequent over to claim his fifth wicket. He became the 15th bowler to claim a five-wicket haul on debut.

Cassell sent Pratik Athavale back to the pavilion to join an exclusive group of bowlers including Rabada and West Indies’ Fidel Edwards, who also took six wickets on their debuts.

He then concluded Oman’s innings with the wicket of Bilal Khan caught behind, claiming the record. Oman were bowled out for a meagre 91, which was easily chased in 17.5 overs.

Pat Cummins out as Australia announce squad for England, Scotland tour

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins have been left out of the T20I as well as the ODI squad for the upcoming tours of England and Scotland in September.

The ODI World Champions have announced two separate squads under the white-ball captain Mitchell Marsh for the tour, featuring six T20I and five ODI matches.

The T20I squad features some fresh faces, reflecting the team’s transition following the retirement of their batting mainstay David Warner. The left-handed batter played his last match during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024.

22-year-old opening batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been selected in T20I and ODI squads to take the top-order slot, which Warner previously held. He has played two ODIs so far during the home series against West Indies earlier this year.

Uncapped all-rounder Cooper Connolly also earned his maiden call-up for the T20I series. He has played in only 15 T20 matches so far, scoring 226 runs with a strike rate of 145.80 and has taken six wickets at an average of 15.16.

Justifying his selection despite playing few games at the domestic level, the national selector George Bailey said, “We haven’t had that many bolters for a little while.”

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“He’s an exciting young talent. Hasn’t played a great many games yet, but we really like his versatility. His work through the middle order for the Scorchers has been really impressive.

“Handy left-arm spin as well which, as a secondary skill, is something we are really keen to keep exploring and see where that goes with his cricket.”

Moreover, Pat Cummins has been rested for the complete tour to manage his workload ahead of the home summer. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are set to play in only ODI series against England.

“He’s got a couple of things he wants to work on physically,” Bailey said. “He’s had a lot of cricket over the past period, and this is an opportunity to get on top of those and set him up for the next period of time; it’s more a management of that.”

Ashton Agar and Matthew Wade, who were part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, have been dropped. Josh Inglis will serve as the wicketkeeper in T20I series, while Alex Carey will continue to keep in ODIs.
