T20 World Cup 2024: Bowlers, Berrington help Scotland edge past Namibia

BRIDGETOWN: A combined bowling effort, followed by captain Richie Berrington’s unbeaten 47 guided Scotland to a five-wicket victory over Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Kensington Oval on Thursday.

While chasing 156, Scotland scored 49 runs at the loss of two wickets in 7.3 overs, courtesy of opening batter Michael Jones’ 20-ball 26.

They soon slipped to 73-4 in 11 overs, with 83 required off nine overs. Berrington and Michael Leask then turned the game on its head with their clean hitting.

Together they added 74 runs for the fifth wicket from 42 balls before Ruben Trumpelmann dismissed Leask, who scored 35 off 17 with four smashing sixes.

However, the match was already tilted on the Scottish side with nine required off 13. Berrington ended the game with a six off David Weise to seal the victory with nine balls to spare.

Spirited USA upset Pakistan to claim historic victory in Super Over

DALLAS: The United States of America (USA) edged past Pakistan in the Super Over to claim a historic upset victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Grand Prairie Stadium here on Thursday.

The USA scored 18 runs in the Super Over as Mohammad Amir bowled three wide balls, which cost seven extra runs. Aaron Jones (11) got out on the last ball.

Mohammad Amir eyes to lead Pakistan’s pace attack in T20 World Cup

DALLAS: Left-arm experienced pacer Mohammad Amir on Thursday, revealed his goals to lead Pakistan’s star-studded pace attack at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Amir, who reversed his retirement earlier this year, lauded Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah for carrying the national team’s pace attack in his absence while stating that he always strives to lead from the front being the senior of them all.

“I am looking forward to playing here and perform well as a cricketer, whether it’s league cricket or international cricket, at the end of the day you have to perform. As a senior bowler, I will always try to lead from the front,” stated Amir.

“But if you look at Naseem, Haris, or Shaheen, they are performing well for the last four years. So, I have an extra responsibility to perform well for them and for the team.”

Pakistan are placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, Ireland, Canada and the co-host United States of America (USA).

The Green Shirts will kick start their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against the USA here on Thursday before taking on arch-rivals India at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9.

However, Mohammad Amir insisted that the team is unfazed by their opponents and is eyeing a perfect run in the group stage.

“You know what, for us it’s about ourselves,” Amir said. “We are here to win and we want to win every single game.

“This is World Cup cricket and there is no margin for error, we have to perform every single game.

“When you come to ICC Events, it’s a big challenge. But we are ready to accept that challenge and to perform well here.”

He further backed struggling all-rounder Shadab Khan and young wicketkeeper batter Azam Khan, asserting that the two have the ability to win the match single-handedly.

“I always say that the player who has performed and proved himself, never doubts his ability. Yes, there is a bad patch in cricket. And this happens with every cricketer. All the legends also if you see in the past, sometimes even they can’t perform well,” Amir said.

“And no on doubts on the ability and quality of Shadab and Azam. They play and perform all over the world. They are one game away – the kind of players that they are, they can single-handedly win the match for you.”

Australia thump Oman to kick off T20 World Cup 2024 with a victory

BARBADOS: Marcus Stoinis backed his blistering half-century with three wickets and led Australia to a comfortable 39-run victory over Oman in the 10th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Thursday.

Set to chase 165, Oman could manage 125 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs despite Ayaan Khan’s 36.

Oman, after a shaky start, lost wickets at regular intervals which halted the flow of runs. They were consequently reduced to 57/6 in 13 overs.

Meanwhile, Ayaan Khan, who came out to bat No.6, put up a notable fight against a strong Australian bowling attack and forged a defiant 32-run partnership with Mehran Khan before falling victim to Adam Zampa in the 16th over.

Ayaan remained the top-scorer for Oman with a 30-ball 36 which featured two fours and as many sixes.

Mehran, on the other hand, retaliated until the penultimate over and walked back after scoring 27 off just 16 deliveries with the help of one four and two sixes.

Marcus Stoinis led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/19, followed by Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis and Mitchell Starc, who claimed two wickets apiece.

Put into bat first, Australia registered a commendable total of 164/5 on the board, courtesy of a sensational fourth-wicket partnership between Warner and Stoinis.

The former champions, however, got off to a shaky start to their innings as they lost their hard-hitting opener Travis Head (12) with just 19 runs on the board in the third over.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh then joined Warner in the middle and the duo partnered briefly to add 31 runs for the second wicket until the former perished in the ninth over.

Marsh scored a scratchy 14 off 21 deliveries and could hit two boundaries.

Australia then endured another setback to their batting expedition as Glenn Maxwell fell for a golden duck. His dismissal reduced Australia to 50/3 in 8.3 overs.

Coming out to bat at No.5, Marcus Stoinis joined forces with David Warner, who was holding his end firm with sensible batting.

The duo launched recovery with cautious batting before Stoinis switched gears with belligerent hitting, which started when he hit Mehran Khan for 26 runs in the 15th over.

Warner and Stoinis then dominated Oman bowlers and scored at a brisk rate for Australia before the opener finally perished in the penultimate over after scoring a gutsy half-century.

David Warner scored 56 off 51 deliveries with the help of six boundaries and a six.

Meanwhile, Stoinis carried his bat all the way through and returned with an unbeaten 67 off just 36 deliveries, laced up with two fours and six sixes.
