Oman captain takes a dig at Australia’s batters ahead of T20 World Cup clash

BRIDGETOWN: Oman’s captain Aqib Ilyas has criticized the batting line-up of Australia ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash, scheduled later today at Kensington Oval.

This will be the first match between the two nations and Ilyas has expressed optimism about his team’s chances against the ODI and Test World champions.

“We don’t have much to lose. Every time there is a World Cup, there is an upset … anything can happen. We respect (Australia) a lot as a team … but before the game, it’s important to not get overawed by them,” the Oman captain told the reporters.

“Once you step into the field, there is no big name, there is no one bigger than you at the field. It’s another game for us and we don’t think that we are going to play someone extraordinary,” he added.

He then took a dig at Australian batters, saying that they lack good technique and only try to go for big shots.

“(Australia) used to have a few players with good techniques in the past like Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, but I don’t think they have many now. They look to hit big. They only try to go for sixes. If we get the same wicket (as the one against Namibia), maybe it could be a problem for them,” Ilyas remarked.

For the unversed, Oman lost Namibia in the Super Over after they defended 109 runs in 20 overs to tie the match.

However, David Weise’s all-round performance sealed the Super Over victory for Namibia.

Pacers, Sharma help India script triumphant start to T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK: A ferocious display of pace bowling, followed by captain Rohit Sharma’s half-century helped India register a dominant victory over Ireland in the eighth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Wednesday.

Chasing a small total of 97 runs, India achieved the target in 12.2 overs after losing two wickets, at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

They had a shaky start to the chase as Virat Kohli (1) fell in the third over with 22 runs on the board. However, captain Rohit Sharma, along with Rishabh Pant, dominated Ireland bowlers with a steady 54-run stand in 44 balls.

Sharma scored the bulk of runs, completing his half-century in the process before getting retired hurt. He scored 52 off 37 with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Suryakumar Yadav (2) replaced Sharma on the crease but soon fell prey to Ben White with India needing six runs to win. Pant then finished the game in style with a six off Barry McCarthy in the 13th over.

The left-hander scored an unbeaten 36 off 26, featuring five boundaries that included two sixes.

Meanwhile, Mark Adair and White claimed one wicket each for Ireland.

Lorcan Tucker (10) and Harry Tector (4) showed some resistance with a 19-run partnership from 23 balls before Indian bowlers rattled through the Irish batting line-up.

Ireland lost six wickets in quick succession, slipping from 27-2 to 50-8, losing six wickets.

Gareth Delany and Josh Little (14) then raised a partnership of 27 off 18 to delay the eventual disaster.

Jasprit Bumrah removed Little to break the Irish momentum before Delany added another 19-run partnership for the last wicket with Ben White (2*).

Delany got run out after scoring 26 runs from 14 balls, featuring two sixes and two fours, as Ireland’s innings wrapped up in 16 overs.

For India, Hardik Pandya claimed 3-27, while Bumrah and Singh bagged two wickets each.

Rohit Sharma opens up on urging Rahul Dravid to continue as India coach

India captain Rohit Sharma said on Tuesday that he had unsuccessfully tried to convince Rahul Dravid to stay on as head coach, hailing him as “a big role model.”

Dravid said ahead of India’s opening match at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland in New York on Wednesday that the tournament would be his last act as the head coach.

Dravid’s contract runs out at the end of the month and he will not reapply for the job, after almost three years in charge.

“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, working with him,” Rohit, who has played under and with Dravid for India, told reporters on the eve of the Ireland game.

He added: “I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well.

“I’ve personally enjoyed my time with him. I’m sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It’s been great working with him.”

India have failed to win a global trophy under Dravid but Rohit was nevertheless full of praise for the 51-year-old former national skipper.

“Such a big role model for all of us,” Rohit Sharma said. “Growing up we watched him play and we know what he’s achieved personally as a player and what he’s done for the team over the years.”

He added: “He’s shown a lot of great determination throughout his career, and that’s something that when he came here as a coach, I wanted to learn from him. It’s been very fruitful.”

Rahul Dravid took over the team from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

This year’s edition in the United States and West Indies is his last chance to end India’s search for major international silverware that stretches back to 2013.

Dravid oversaw runs to the finals of both the World Test Championship and their home 50-over World Cup last year, but they came up short against Australia each time.

Persistent rain washes out England-Scotland T20 World Cup 2024 clash

BARBADOS: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash between England and Scotland was washed out due to persistent rain here.

Before the final rain interruption, Scotland scored 90/0 in the reduced 10 overs, courtesy of a solid partnership between their opener Michael Jones and George Munsey.

Earlier, Scotland captain Richie Berrington won the toss and elected to bat first despite Kensington Oval being covered in dark clouds.

Scotland had a decent start to their innings as they scored 51 for the loss of no wicket in 6.2 overs before rain interrupted the action.

The rain interruption continued for more than two hours before the outfield was declared fit to play on and the match was consequently reduced to 10 overs per side.

Meanwhile, Jones and Munsey resumed Scotland’s innings and switched gears to add quick runs.

They added 39 runs to the total in just 22 deliveries to power their side to a competitive total.

However, due to the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method, the revised target for England was 109 runs.

But before England could start their pursuit, it began to downpour here again. The rain got heavier and continued till the cut-off time of 20 minutes thus the officials decided to call it off.

With their first fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 washed out, both England and Scotland will share a point each.

For the unversed, the washout extended England’s dismal record against European sides in T20 World Cups.

Defending champions England next face arch-rivals Australia on Saturday while Scotland will lock horns with Namibia on Thursday.

Bowlers, O’Dowd propel Netherlands edge Nepal in T20 World Cup

DALLAS: Opener Max O’Dowd’s sensible half-century after a dominant bowling performance led the Netherlands to beat Nepal by six wickets in the seventh match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The Netherlands chased down the modest 107-run total with just eight balls to spare as Nepal bowlers forced them to make hard yards with a tight bowling display.

The Dutch had a dismal start to the pursuit as they lost Michael Levitt (1) with just three runs on the board in the second over.

Max O’Dowd then put together important partnerships with Vikramjit Singh and Sybrand Engelbrecht before eventually leading the Netherlands to a hard-fought victory in the penultimate over.

He top-scored for the Netherlands with 54 off 48 deliveries, laced up with five boundaries including a six.

For Nepal, Abinash Bohara, Sompal Kami and Dipendra Singh Airee made one scalp each.

Nepal had a dismal start to their innings as they lost their openers Aasif Sheikh (4) and Kushal Bhurtel (7) inside the batting powerplay with just 15 runs on the board.

Skipper Rohit Paudel and Anil Sah then momentarily anchored the innings with a cautious 25-run partnership.

The duo appeared to have settled down but Tim Pringle breached Sah’s defences and provided a breakthrough to the Netherlands in the eighth over. Sah scored 11 off 12 deliveries.

Sah’s dismissal ignited a middle-order collapse as Nepal lost three more wickets in quick succession and consequently slipped to 66/6 in 13.2 overs.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s batting mainstay Paudel, who waged a lone battle since coming out to bat No.4, finally perished in the 16th over.

Rohit Paudel remained the top-scorer for Nepal with a gritty 35 off 37 deliveries with the help of five fours.

Following Paudel’s dismissal, tailenders Karan KC and Gulshan Jha added valuable runs for the Asian side at the backend.

Karan and Gulshan knitted a crucial 22-run partnership for the eighth wicket before both perished in quick intervals.

Karan made a brisk 17 off 12 deliveries, hitting two sixes, while Gulshan scored a cautious 14.

Logan van Beek then dismissed Nepal’s No.11 Abinash Bohara on a golden duck to wrap up the Netherlands’ tight bowling display.

For the Netherlands, van Beek and Tim Pringle picked three wickets each while Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede claimed two apiece.
