Gardner takes four as Australia crush Pakistan by nine wickets

DUBAI: Ashleigh Gardner’s four-wicket haul remained the cornerstone of Australia’s nine-wicket thrashing of Pakistan in the 14th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Friday.

Chasing a modest 83-run target, Australia comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of just one wicket and 54 balls to spare.

Openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney (15) gave Australia a flying start to the pursuit with a rampant 36-run partnership, which lasted with the latter’s dismissal in the fifth over.

But Healy continued smashing the Pakistan bowlers and had brought Australia in touching distance but severe cramps forced her to retire hurt in the 10th over.

She remained the top-scorer for Australia with a 23-ball 37, laced up with five fours.

Experienced all-rounder Ellyse Perry was then joined by Ashleigh Gardner in the middle and the duo made sure to steer Australia to an important victory without further damage.

Perry scored an unbeaten 22 off 23 balls, while Gardner made seven not out.

For Pakistan, Sadia Iqbal picked up the solitary wicket.

Put into bat first, Pakistan only managed 82 before getting bundled out on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

The Green Shirts started their innings cautiously with stand-in skipper Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin batting defensively.

To cope with the slow start, Muneeba looked to accelerate and target Sophie Molineux in the fourth over but ended up handing a simple catch to Phoebe Litchfield after scoring seven off 12 deliveries.

Pakistan then lost three more wickets in quick succession and had been reduced to 29/4 in eight overs.

Australia’s bowlers extended their dominance over Pakistan with regular strikes but Aliya Riaz offered a notable fightback and made sure to keep the scoreboard ticking until her dismissal in the final over.

She remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 32-ball 26 with the help of three boundaries.

Besides her, only Sidra Amin and Iram Javed, 12 each, and Nida Dar (10) made it to the double figures.

Ashleigh Gardner was the standout bowler for Australia, returning brilliant figures of 4/21 in her four overs. She was supported by Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham, who bagged two wickets each.

The nine-wicket victory strengthened Australia’s command at the summit of Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with six points in three matches while Pakistan slipped to fourth with two points in as many matches.

The duo stitched a gutsy 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket but until Sanjeewani fell victim to Asha Sobhana in the eighth over after scoring 20 off 22.

Mooney, Schutt power Australia to a crushing victory over New Zealand

SHARJAH: Beth Mooney’s anchoring knock, coupled with Megan Schutt’s 3/3 propelled Australia to a crushing 60-run victory over New Zealand in the 10th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Set to chase 149, New Zealand’s batting unit unfolded on a meagre 88 in 19.2 overs despite an anchoring second-wicket partnership between Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr.

The White Ferns had a shaky start to the pursuit as they lost Georgia Plimmer (4) in the third over with just seven runs on the board.

Following the early hiccup, Kerr joined forces with Bates for an anchoring partnership. The duo added 47 runs for the second wicket before both perished in successive overs, reducing New Zealand to 56/3 in 11.3 overs.

Kerr remained the top-scorer for New Zealand with a 31-ball 29, followed by Bates, who made a cautious 20 off 27 deliveries.

New Zealand’s middle order faltered against Australia’s ruthless bowling attack. The White Ferns lost their remaining seven wickets for just 32 runs and were eventually bowled out for a modest total.

For Australia, Annabel Sutherland and Schutt bagged three wickets each, followed by Sophie Molineux with two.

Australia’s captain Alyssa Healy’s decision to bat first bore fruits as the defending champions accumulated 148/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

Skipper Healy gave Australia a head start, courtesy of her brisk 26-run cameo, which featured four boundaries. Healy was involved in a rampant 41-run partnership with Mooney, which culminated with the former’s dismissal in the sixth over.

Mooney was then involved in another crucial partnership for Australia when she put together 45 runs for the second wicket with seasoned all-rounder Ellyse Perry.

The left-handed opener was on course to smash her fifth Women’s T20I half-century but fell 10 runs short as Amelia Kerr, who returned brilliant figures of 4/26, struck gold for New Zealand.

Mooney remained the top-scorer for Australia with a 32-ball 40, peppered with two fours.

Following her departure, Perry took charge of Australia’s batting expedition and knitted a brief 21-run partnership with Phoebe Litchfield until falling victim to Kerr in the 14th over.

Perry made a 24-ball 30 with the help of three fours and a six.

The defending champions then sustained another massive blow when Grace Harris fell for a golden duck on the next delivery, reducing Australia to 109/4 in 14 overs.

Litchfield then briefly partnered with Ashleigh Gardner for a 12-run stand before being outclassed by Brooke Halliday in the 17th over. She made a run-a-ball 18.

Australia’s lower middle order was toothless against a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack and made modest contributions yet a flamboyant start took the holders to a commendable total.

Amelia Kerr was the standout bowler for New Zealand, courtesy of her four-wicket haul, followed by Halliday and Rosemary Mair, who bagged two wickets each.

The 60-run victory lifted Australia to the top of Group A standings of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with four points in two matches while New Zealand slipped to third with two points in as many matches.

Set to chase 119, Bangladesh only managed 97 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their quota of 20 overs despite Sobhana Mostary’s 44-run knock.

Bangladesh had a shaky start to the pursuit as Shathi Rani and Dilara Akter perished inside five overs with the scoreboard reading 17/2.

Skipper Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary then tried to settle things down with a cautious 35-run partnership, culminating with the former’s dismissal in the 12th over.

The cautious approach did not benefit England much as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually curtailed to 118/7.

For Bangladesh, Nahida Akter, Ritu Moni and Fahima Khatun bagged two wickets each while Rabeya Khan made one scalp.

Hosts Bangladesh are at the top of Group B standings of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with two points in one match while England are playing their first match of the tournament.
