England edge spirited Bangladesh in Women’s T20 World Cup campaign opener

SHARJAH: Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s anchoring knock, followed by a combined bowling effort steered England to a 21-run victory over Bangladesh in the sixth match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Set to chase 119, Bangladesh only managed 97 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their quota of 20 overs despite Sobhana Mostary’s 44-run knock.

Bangladesh had a shaky start to the pursuit as Shathi Rani and Dilara Akter perished inside five overs with the scoreboard reading 17/2.

Skipper Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary then tried to settle things down with a cautious 35-run partnership, culminating with the former’s dismissal in the 12th over.

Sultana made 15 off 20 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

Her dismissal sparked a collapse as Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals, while Mostary ticked the scoreboard singlehandedly until finally walking back to the dugout in the penultimate over.

She remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a gutsy 44 off 48 balls, laced up with one six and a four.

Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith bagged two wickets each for England while Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sarah Glenn struck out one batter apiece.

Opting to bat first, former champions England got off to a flying start to their innings as openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge dominated Bangladesh bowlers in the batting powerplay, which yielded 47 runs.

England were on course to amass a big total but Rabeya Khan, bowling her first over, provided Bangladesh with a massive breakthrough in the form of Bouchier.

Bouchier scored a brisk 23 off 18 deliveries with the help of three fours.

England suffered another blow when Nat Sciver-Brunt (2)was trapped lbw by Fahima Khatun with the scoreboard reading 53/2 in eight overs.

Skipper Heather Knight then put together a cautious 20-run partnership for the third wicket with Wyatt-Hodge before both perished in quick succession, reducing England to 76/4 in 12.1 overs.

Knight made six off seven balls, while Wyatt-Hodge remained the top-scorer for England with a 40-ball 41, laced up with five fours.

The back-to-back dismissals jolted England’s batting expedition and the former champions went into a defensive mode.

The cautious approach did not benefit England much as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually curtailed to 118/7.

For Bangladesh, Nahida Akter, Ritu Moni and Fahima Khatun bagged two wickets each while Rabeya Khan made one scalp.

Hosts Bangladesh are at the top of Group B standings of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with two points in one match while England are playing their first match of the tournament.

Bangladesh whitewash England 3-0 in T20I series

DHAKA: Liton Das smashed a Twenty20 career-best 73 as Bangladesh stunned world champions England to sweep the series 3-0 and score a massive upset in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

In a major humiliation for England’s normally clinical white ball unit ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India later this year, Bangladesh won the third and final T20 in Dhaka by 16 runs.

The home side already won the first game by six wickets and the second by four wickets to give Bangladesh their first series victory over England in any format.

Set 159 to win after winning the toss and opting to bowl, England managed only 142 for the loss of six wickets despite Dawid Malan making 53 and captain Jos Buttler 40 as Taskin Ahmed took 2-26.

Opener Liton gave Bangladesh a positive start, putting on 55 runs with Rony Talukdar in the opening stand.

England’s first breakthrough came when Adil Rashid dismissed Rony for 24 but Najmul Hossain and Liton added 84 runs for the second wicket to keep up momentum.

England missed a chance to dismiss Liton soon after the right-hander completed his ninth T20I half-century when Ben Duckett dropped him on 51 at deep mid-wicket off Jofra Archer.

Chris Jordan brought an end to Liton’s 57-ball innings, forcing him to give a catch to Phil Salt at deep midwicket.

England did well to contain the Bangladeshi batsmen after Liton’s dismissal with only one boundary struck in the death overs.

But Najmul, who survived on 40 after being given lbw off Jordan, ensured Bangladesh still had a decent score with his third 40-plus innings in the series.

Jordan and Rashid finished with 1-21 and 1-23 for England respectively.

England in reply started poorly as debutant Tanvir Islam dismissed Phil Salt for a duck in the very first over.

But Malan, who survived on review after being given out lbw for six, and Buttler put England back in control with a second-wicket stand of 95.

Mustafizur Rahman added the first twist in the contest by removing Malan, which brought him his 100th T20I wicket.

Buttler was soon run out for 40 with a direct hit from Mehidy Hasan that allowed Bangladesh firmly back into the contest.

Taskin returned to claim the wickets of Moeen Ali (nine) and Ben Duckett (11) before Shakib Al Hasan get rid of Sam Curran (four) to complete the rout.

“It’s really disappointing,” Buttler said afterwards. “I thought it was a good score to restrict them to.

England won the preceding three-match one-day international series 2-1.

Bangladesh stun England to seal T20 series

MIRPUR: Mehidy Hasan Miraz shone with ball and bat as Bangladesh stunned England to win the second Twenty20 international by four wickets and seal the series 2-0.

Mehidy bowled a career-best 4-12 to help the hosts bowl out England for 117 before he hit 20 off 16 balls as Bangladesh raced to 120-6 in 18.5 overs.

Najmul Hossain top-scored at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka with 46 not out for Bangladesh, who have now won at least one series in one format against all Test-playing countries.

The hosts won the first match of the series by six wickets in Chittagong.

Sent into bat first, England were rarely in the contest after losing their way in the middle of the innings as their batsmen struggled to cope with a low and slow wicket in Mirpur.

Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Mustafizur Rahman each complemented Mehidy with a wicket apiece.

Ben Duckett top-scored with 28 while Phil Salt made 25 off 19 balls.

Taskin dismissed opener Dawid Malan for five but Salt and Moeen Ali showed positive intent to put on 34 runs for the second wicket.

The visitors then lost Salt, skipper Jos Buttler (four) and Ali (15) in consecutive overs to ruin their prospect of putting in a big total.

Mehidy then struck twice in one over to dismiss Sam Curran (12) and Chris Woakes (0) to deny England a late recovery.

Bangladesh in their reply lost both their openers Liton Das (nine) and Rony Talukdar (nine) cheaply but young Towhid Hridoy made 17 to steady the innings.

Najmul and Mehidy put Bangladesh in charge with a 41-run stand. England sniffed a chance with a few late wickets as Jofra Archer wracked havoc to finish with 3-13.

However, Najmul thwarted the visiting side with his unbeaten 47-ball innings featuring three boundaries.

Taskin completed the win with consecutive fours off Chris Jordan in the nineteenth over.

The third and final match of the series will be held at the same ground on Tuesday.

England won the preceding three-match one-day international series 2-1.

The matches are important practice for England on South Asian pitches ahead of the ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year.

Najmul powers Bangladesh to T20 upset over England

CHITTAGONG: Najmul Hossain hit 51 off 30 balls as Bangladesh held their nerve to beat world champions England by six wickets in the first Twenty20 international in Chittagong on Thursday.

Najmul’s third T20I fifty guided Bangladesh to 158-4 in 18 overs after the hosts held England to 156-6, despite skipper Jos Buttler making 67 off 42 balls.

“Bangladesh finished the innings really well. We were in a position to really kick on and launch at the end, but we couldn’t manage to get away,” said Buttler.

“We were probably 20 short with our score and we had to chase a little bit in the field.”

Buttler put on 80 runs with Phil Salt in their opening partnership after the hosts put England in to bat first.

But England crumbled after Buttler’s fourth-wicket dismissal and managed just 21 runs in the last five overs.

Pace bowler Hasan Mahmud, who forced Buttler to give a catch at long-on in the 16th over, finished with 2-26.

Bangladesh got off to a positive start as Rony Talukdar (21) and Liton Das (12) put on 33 in their opening partnership.

Adil Rashid bowled Talukdar to break the stand and Jofra Archer soon removed Liton.

But Najmul and debutant Towhid Hridoy added 65 runs for the third wicket to put Bangladesh in control.

Moeen Ali ended their partnership by getting rid of Hridoy for 24 after Najmul raced to his fifty off 27 balls.

Mark Wood bowled Najmul for some small revenge after conceding fours to the left-hander off each of his first four balls.

Shakib Al Hasan denied England further momentum and drove home the win with a boundary off Chris Jordan to stay 34 not out.

Afif Hossain was not out for 15 at the other end as the duo added 46 runs in their unbroken fifth wicket stand.

“The way we approached the game was fantastic, can’t ask more from our team,” Bangladesh skipper Shakib said.

“When we were bowling, we were under the pump but no one panicked.”

Salt was the first England batsman dismissed after making 38 off 35 balls when he connected the bottom edge off a Nasum Ahmed delivery.

Nasum was unlucky in failing to dismiss Buttler on 19 when Shakib missed a high catch at mid-off.

Shakib compensated by removing Dawid Malan for four before Mustafizur Rahman bowled Ben Duckett for 20.

This was the first T20 for England since winning the World Cup in Australia in November.

The hosts and England had previously played only one T20I against each other, which England won by eight wickets at the 2021 World Cup.

The remaining two matches of the series will be played in Dhaka on March 12 and 14.

Roy ton powers England to victory in 2nd Bangladesh ODI

DHAKA: Jason Roy struck a century while Sam Curran put in a fine all-round performance as England thrashed Bangladesh by 132 runs in the second one-day international in Dhaka on Friday.

The victory, giving holders England valuable practice on spinning, low-bounce South Asian pitches before the 50-over World Cup in India later this year, meant that the visitors took the series 2-0 with one match still to play.

England dismissed Bangladesh for 194 runs in 44.4 overs, thanks to Curran’s 4-29 and Adil Rashid’s 4-45 after Roy struck 132 off 124 balls to guide the side to 326-7, the highest ODI score by a side in Dhaka in over five years.

The win also made England the first side to win an ODI series in Bangladesh in over six years, with the side also winning a series here last time in 2016.

Curran, replacing Chris Woakes after the first match, took three wickets in five balls in the opening two overs, including two in two balls in the first over to leave Bangladesh reeling at 9-3.

The hosts could never recover from the damage despite veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan making 58 runs.

Shakib and skipper Tamim Iqbal shared 79 runs for the fourth wicket before Moeen Ali removed Tamim for 35 to end their resistance. Shakib was caught by Curran at extra cover off Rashid.

Bangladesh, who were playing their 100th ODI at Mirpur, earlier elected to bowl first and kept the tourists in check at the start.

Top-order batsmen Phil Salt (7), James Vince (5) and first-match centurion Dawid Malan (11) all fell cheaply. But Roy and skipper Jos Buttler gave England lift-off with their fourth-wicket stand of 109.

Roy finally departed when Shakib had him out leg before and Buttler then took over the charge until he was dismissed by Mehidy for 76 off 64 balls.

Moeen added a late blitz of 42 runs from 35 balls and Curran played his part with an unbeaten 33 off 19 balls.

Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with 3-66.

Buttler paid tribute to Roy and called it a “fantastic” series win ahead of the final game on Monday in Chittagong.

“Bangladesh are a formidable team at home so we’re delighted to get the win. (We) spoke about areas to improve from the last match and we really did that,” cricket website Cricinfo quoted the England captain as saying.

“We’ll assess the conditions and play accordingly, there’s lots of guys putting their hands up and putting up performances, which is fantastic,” he said.

Tamim said he was disappointed by the way Bangladesh bowled at the start while ruing a missed run-out.

“Roy and Buttler batted exceptionally well. When you lose, you can point fingers. I’m not going to do that. We didn’t do well as a team, and that’s why we lost,” he said, according to Cricinfo.

Malan ton gives England thrilling win over Bangladesh

DHAKA: Dawid Malan scored a hundred under pressure to guide England to a thrilling three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Malan hit an unbeaten 114 off 145 balls as England reached their target with eight balls to spare after the hosts had them reeling with Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and James Vince all out cheaply.

Earlier England bowled out Bangladesh for 209 with Moeen Ali, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid each claiming two wickets and Najmul Hossain scoring 58, his maiden ODI half-century.

The hosts made a decent start after electing to bat first, with skipper Tamim Iqbal making 23. But after Chris Woakes earned the first breakthrough with the wicket of Liton Das, England struck whenever a partnership was developing.

Tamim was bowled by Wood before spinners were called into action, as England got valuable South Asian practice ahead of their defence of the ODI World Cup crown in India later this year.

Moeen bowled Shakib Al Hasan for eight before Rashid picked up the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim.

Najmul and Mahmudullah Riyad (31) forged a 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket before they fell in successive overs.

Debutant Will Jacks claimed the wicket of Afif Hossain three overs later to kill off Bangladesh’s remaining chance of putting up a big total.

England made a poor start with the bat, with Taijul Islam picking up 3-54 and complemented brilliantly by other bowlers as Bangladesh made a match out of low scores.

With help from Shakib, Mehidy Miraz and Taskin Ahmed, the visitors were reduced to 103-5 halfway through the innings with Roy, Buttler and Vince all out for single-digit scores.

Jacks made a valiant 26 and then Moeen provided Malan with some support in a vital 38-run sixth wicket stand before Mehidy dismissed him for 14.

However Malan, who along with Moeen participated in the recent Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament, hung on to keep England in the hunt.

Tamim took a fine diving catch at mid-on to dismiss Woakes off Taijul for seven to give the game some tension with England still needing 49.

But Malan, who came to the crease in the second over after Shakib dismissed Roy for four, guided tail-ender Rashid (17 not out) to complete the win.

Player of the match Malan earlier brought his fourth hundred in ODIs with a boundary off Taskin. He struck eight fours and four sixes overall.

“(I) spent a fair bit of time in Bangladesh, especially at this ground. Told Jos it would have been tough to chase if they’d have got 30-40 more,” Malan said afterwards.

“Satisfying to get over the line, handling pressure is part of the job.”

“These are tough conditions. Malan’s innings is an example for us on how to play on these wickets,” Buttler said.

“There’s plenty of areas to work and improve. It’s about small partnerships on wickets like these.”

Tamim said his side “should have scored at least 30-35 more”.

“Have to give it to Malan,” he conceded. “We tried everything in our bowling option.”

ABU DHABI: Jason Roy took the match away single-handedly from Bangladesh for England as they notched their second consecutive win in T20 World Cup 2021 by eight wickets.

The right-handed opener smashed unbeaten 61 off 38 balls laced with five boundaries and three sixes to help England notch an easy win.

Earlier, it was England bowlers’ day as they restricted Bangladesh to paltry 124-9 in 20 overs in eighth match of the mega event here on Wednesday.
