BPL 2026: Malan, Hridoy power Rangpur Riders to win over Dhaka Capitals

MIRPUR: Half-centuries from Dawid Malan and Towhid Hridoy laid the foundation for a comprehensive Rangpur Riders victory over Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 clash at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.

Asked to bat first, the Riders made full use of the conditions as Malan and Hridoy stitched together a dominant 126-run opening partnership, putting Dhaka under pressure from the outset.

Malan set the tone with an authoritative 78 off 49 deliveries, striking eight fours and four sixes before Taskin Ahmed finally broke the stand.

Hridoy ensured the momentum was not lost, anchoring the innings with a well-paced 62 from 46 balls, decorated with five boundaries and four maximums, before falling to Maruf Mridha.

Kyle Mayers provided late impetus with a brisk 24 off 16, helping Rangpur post a competitive 181 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

Dhaka Capitals’ chase never quite settled. Faheem Ashraf struck early, removing both openers inside the first four overs to leave the hosts struggling at 36.

The pressure intensified when Nahid Rana dismissed Saif Hassan and Sabbir Rahman in quick succession, reducing Dhaka to 53 for 4.

A brief revival came through Mohammad Saifuddin and Imad Wasim, who added 48 runs for the seventh wicket to keep the contest alive.

However, Mustafizur Rahman’s timely breakthrough ended Wasim’s knock of 20 and halted the comeback.

Saifuddin fought on valiantly, finishing unbeaten on 58 off just 30 balls, including three fours and five sixes, but the target proved out of reach.

Dhaka Capitals closed on 170 for 7, falling 11 runs short.

Nahid Rana led Rangpur’s bowling effort with three wickets, while Faheem Ashraf chipped in with two, sealing a convincing all-round performance for the Riders.

BPL 2025: Dawid Malan’s blitz steers Fortune Barishal to victory over Khulna Tigers

MIRPUR: Dawid Malan struck a blistering half-century to steer Fortune Barishal to a thrilling last-over victory in their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) clash against Khulna Tigers here at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

Fortune Barishal chased a total of 188 runs on the first ball of the 19th over courtesy of a combined batting effort led by Malan.

Malan lost his opening partner Towhid Hridoy (11) in the second over, however, he along with Tamim Iqbal added 91 runs for the second wicket to keep his team in the hunt.

Tamim Iqbal scored a cautious 27 off 25 while Malan dominated the partnership with his elegant strokeplay.

Dawid Malan fell prey to Afif Hossain in the 13th over after scoring an explosive 63 off 37 balls, featuring three sixes and eight fours.

After Malan’s dismissal, Bangladesh veterans Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah scored 24 runs each to keep Fortune Barishal in command.

Faheem Ashraf and Muhammad Nabi finally sealed the match with a quick sixth-wicket stand of 36 runs from 16 balls. Ashraf scored 18 off 6 while Nabi’s 10-ball 15 (10) was enough to hand Khulna Tigers their 6th loss of the season.

For Khulna Tigers, Abu Hider managed two wickets, while Salman Irshad and Afif Hossain bagged one each.

Earlier, Khulna Tigers posted 187-5 in their allocated 20 overs after being invited to bat first. Their captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim added 47 runs for the first wicket, with the latter scoring his third half-century of the season.

The openers laid a solid foundation for the subsequent batters to capitalise and take the Khulna Tigers to an imposing total.

Afif Hossain played a 32-run knock from 27 balls, while wicket-keeper batter Mahidul Islam Ankon struck a quick-fire 27* of 12 balls which included three sixes and two fours.

Faheem Ashraf took two wickets for 49 runs while Mohammad Nabi bowled an economical spell, conceding only 22 runs for his solitary wicket.

This was Fortune Barishal’s fifth win on the trot as they stand in second place at the BPL points table with eight wins out of 10 matches. Meanwhile, Rangpur Rider are topping the charts with 16 points from 10 matches.

Dawid Malan announces retirement from international cricket

Former top-ranked ICC T20I batter Dawid Malan announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, with the batter saying his England career “has not been easy”.

Malan signed a 12-month central contract in October and was England’s leading run-scorer in their woeful ICC ODI World Cup title defence in India in the weeks that followed. But the left-hander has not played for England since that showpiece tournament.

Yet he was repeatedly criticised for being insufficiently aggressive at the crease in an era of dynamic white-ball hitting.

Nevertheless, Malan is just one of two England batters, alongside Jos Buttler, to have scored hundreds in all three international formats — Tests, ODIs and T20s.

But Malan, a member of England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning squad, has accepted now is the right time to call time on a seven-year international career of 22 Tests and 92 white-ball internationals.

“It has been an incredible journey since July 2017,” said Dawid Malan, born in England but brought up and educated in South Africa. “I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats.

“Cricket, like most sports, is an industry where almost everyone eventually retires wishing they had done that little bit more.

“Whether you’ve played 10 Tests or 100, many step away regretting not playing just one more, scoring a few more runs, or winning more trophies.

“Right now, as I retire from international cricket, I can say I am genuinely satisfied.”

He added: “It has not been easy. It may be my nature, but for whatever reason, it has always seemed that I had something to prove and often felt as if I was playing for my place.

“The pressure goes with the territory, but it does take a mental and physical toll. Even so, I look back with pride on what I have been able to achieve.”

Dawid Malan, who amassed 4,416 runs for England across all formats, agreed a white-ball-only deal at English county Yorkshire earlier this year and could now spend most of his time on the global T20 franchise circuit.

Malan ton gives England thrilling win over Bangladesh

DHAKA: Dawid Malan scored a hundred under pressure to guide England to a thrilling three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Malan hit an unbeaten 114 off 145 balls as England reached their target with eight balls to spare after the hosts had them reeling with Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and James Vince all out cheaply.

Earlier England bowled out Bangladesh for 209 with Moeen Ali, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid each claiming two wickets and Najmul Hossain scoring 58, his maiden ODI half-century.

The hosts made a decent start after electing to bat first, with skipper Tamim Iqbal making 23. But after Chris Woakes earned the first breakthrough with the wicket of Liton Das, England struck whenever a partnership was developing.

Tamim was bowled by Wood before spinners were called into action, as England got valuable South Asian practice ahead of their defence of the ODI World Cup crown in India later this year.

Moeen bowled Shakib Al Hasan for eight before Rashid picked up the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim.

Najmul and Mahmudullah Riyad (31) forged a 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket before they fell in successive overs.

Debutant Will Jacks claimed the wicket of Afif Hossain three overs later to kill off Bangladesh’s remaining chance of putting up a big total.

England made a poor start with the bat, with Taijul Islam picking up 3-54 and complemented brilliantly by other bowlers as Bangladesh made a match out of low scores.

With help from Shakib, Mehidy Miraz and Taskin Ahmed, the visitors were reduced to 103-5 halfway through the innings with Roy, Buttler and Vince all out for single-digit scores.

Jacks made a valiant 26 and then Moeen provided Malan with some support in a vital 38-run sixth wicket stand before Mehidy dismissed him for 14.

However Malan, who along with Moeen participated in the recent Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament, hung on to keep England in the hunt.

Tamim took a fine diving catch at mid-on to dismiss Woakes off Taijul for seven to give the game some tension with England still needing 49.

But Malan, who came to the crease in the second over after Shakib dismissed Roy for four, guided tail-ender Rashid (17 not out) to complete the win.

Player of the match Malan earlier brought his fourth hundred in ODIs with a boundary off Taskin. He struck eight fours and four sixes overall.

“(I) spent a fair bit of time in Bangladesh, especially at this ground. Told Jos it would have been tough to chase if they’d have got 30-40 more,” Malan said afterwards.

“Satisfying to get over the line, handling pressure is part of the job.”

“These are tough conditions. Malan’s innings is an example for us on how to play on these wickets,” Buttler said.

“There’s plenty of areas to work and improve. It’s about small partnerships on wickets like these.”

Tamim said his side “should have scored at least 30-35 more”.

“Have to give it to Malan,” he conceded. “We tried everything in our bowling option.”
