Anderson, Singh star as USA stun Bangladesh in series opener

HOUSTON: Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh powered United States of America (USA) to hand Bangladesh a shocking five-wicket loss in the first of the three-match T20I series at Prairie View Cricket Complex on Tuesday.

This marked the inaugural international match between the two nations, serving as a crucial opportunity for them to gear up for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the USA and West Indies from June 1.

The hosts invited Bangladesh to bat first and restricted them to 153/6, thanks to Steven Taylor’s brilliant spell, during which he claimed two wickets for nine runs.

Bangladesh at one point were 68-4 in 11.2 overs, however, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah helped the team recover with a 67-run stand from 47 balls.

Hridoy top-scored with 58 off 47, featuring four boundaries and two sixes, while Mahmudullah scored 31 runs from 22 balls.

The USA team began their pursuit with a conservative approach, however, the bowlers from Bangladesh consistently applied pressure, causing the required run rate to rise. Consequently, the home team found themselves at 94-5 inside 15 overs.

With 60 required off 31, Anderson and Singh joined hands and snatched the game from the claws of Bangladesh.

Together they raised an unbeaten 62-run partnership from 28 balls and finished the game with three balls to spare.

Anderson scored 34 off 25 with two sixes, while Singh scored 33 from 13 balls, featuring three sixes and two fours.

“It’s a great feeling,” Singh said after the match.

“I was backing myself and the main aspect of the game was to stay in the game till the last. It came down to our best efforts in the last over and I think that was our plan,” he said.

“Definitely Corey [Anderson] brings a lot of experience. He himself played a lot of big tournaments, big games. He knows how to finish games and how to stay calm under pressure, finish till the last ball…we all look up to him,” he said.

The second T20I will be played at the same venue on May 23.

Bangladesh announce squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the squad in the mega-event while Taskin Ahmed will serve as his deputy.

Ahmed is currently sidelined due to a side strain he suffered during the recent series against Zimbabwe and will not be taking part in the three-match T20I series against the USA leading up to the T20 World Cup.

However, it is expected that he will recover in time for the tournament.

The Bangladesh squad also features veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is set to make his record-ninth appearance in the T20 World Cup.

He and India’s captain Rohit Sharma are the only two players to have participated in every T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition in 2007.

Meanwhile, pacer Mohammad Saifuddin was dropped and instead, young pacer Tanzim Hasan made the cut for the World Cup.

Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf of Bangladesh clarified that both players were assessed during the Zimbabwe series. Saifuddin failed to impress selectors due to a lack of yorkers in the death overs.

“We wanted to observe and analyse Saifuddin’s performance in the Zimbabwe series. But when we considered what the team needs at the moment, Tanzim was ahead of Saifuddin. It was a close call between the two,” Ashraf said.

“We saw Tanzim against Sri Lanka. His dedication and hunger kept him ahead. He is also a good fielder. We didn’t see enough yorkers in the death overs from Saifuddin.”

Bangladesh are placed in Group D of the T20 World Cup 2024 alongside Sri Lanka, South Africa, Netherlands and Nepal.

They will kick start their campaign on June 7 against Sri Lanka in Dallas.

Sikandar Raza helps Zimbabwe avoid whitewash against Bangladesh

DHAKA: Sikandar Raza and Brian Bennett hit half-centuries as Zimbabwe secured an eight-wicket consolation victory over Bangladesh in the final T20I at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday to avoid a 5-0 whitewash.

Captain Raza hit an unbeaten 72 off 46 to guide Zimbabwe to 158-2 after they restricted Bangladesh to 157-6. Meanwhile, Bennett struck 70 off 49 balls after picking up 2-20 with the ball.

Zimbabwe lost opener Tadiwanashe Marumani for one, but Bennett and Raza added 75 runs for the second wicket to put the visitors firmly in control.

Mohammad Saifuddin dismissed Bennett, who struck five fours and as many sixes, but Raza defied a muscle injury to see Zimbabwe to victory.

He struck six fours and four sixes in his unbeaten knock before Johnathan Campbell hit the winning single with nine balls to spare.

Mahmudullah Riyad earlier hit 54 off 44 balls for Bangladesh. The right-hander, who struck six fours and a six, put on 69 runs with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto to help Bangladesh recover from 15-3 after they were asked to bat.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan added 21 off 17 balls after Najmul’s departure for 36 runs after facing 28 balls.

The hosts were in trouble when Blessing Muzarabani removed opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim for two and Brian Bennett struck twice in successive overs.

Bennett had opener Soumya Sarkar caught by Sean Williams at backward point for seven before he forced Towhid Hridoy to edge behind for one.

Mahmudullah launched a counter-attack, cracking three fours off the first four balls he faced.

Wellington Masakadza dismissed Najmul to break the partnership, but Shakib’s brief cameo kept the scoreboard ticking.

Luke Jongwe brought a premature end to Shakib’s innings, but Jaker Ali Anik hit an unbeaten 24 off 11 balls.

Notably, Bangladesh won the first four matches to attain an unassailable lead in the series.

Bangladesh recall Shakib Al Hasan for last two Zimbabwe T20s

Bangladesh on Wednesday recalled all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman for the final two T20Is of the five-match series against Zimbabwe.

Former captain Shakib has not played a T20 since July 2023 and was this year elected as a member of parliament for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling party.

Shakib has refused to draw the curtains on his cricket career, and his participation in this series is the strongest indication that he will compete in next month’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

“We expect him to play in the World Cup. This is why he is back in the squad for this series,” Jalal Yunus, the cricket operations chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), told AFP.

Left-arm pace bowler Mustafizur was rested for the first three matches after returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he was the season’s joint-highest wicket-taker for the Chennai Super Kings.

Top-order batsman Soumya Sarkar also returned to the side after missing the first three matches due to injury.

Parvez Hossain Emon and Afif Hossain, both named in the squad for the first three matches but neither making the XI, have been left out. Meanwhile, pace bowler Shoriful Islam also rested to accommodate the returning trio.

Bangladesh have already sealed the series 3-0, with the last two matches scheduled in Dhaka on Friday and Sunday.

The Zimbabwe tour is the last home series for Bangladesh before the T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1.

Yunus said the BCB expected to announce its World Cup squad at the end of the series.

Taskin, Tanzid propel Bangladesh to beat Zimbabwe in T20I series opener

Debutant opener Tanzid Hasan hit an unbeaten 67 after Taskin Ahmed’s 3/14 and guided Bangladesh to an eight-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the five-match series in Chittagong.

The hosts raced to 126-2 in under 16 overs after bowling out Zimbabwe for 124, with Towhid Hridoy finishing unbeaten on 33.

Tanzid smashed eight fours and two sixes in his 47-ball maiden T20I, lofting Luke Jongwe over mid-off for a boundary to complete the match.

“Everyone played well today… but we can still learn from this game and come back well in the next match,” said Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

“Last couple of days, we trained very hard, and I hope that Tanzid continues his form.”

A record stand by Clive Madande and Wellington Masakadza earlier helped Zimbabwe recover from an early collapse that left the tourists languishing on 41-7.

The pair put on 75 runs together for Zimbabwe’s highest eighth-wicket partnership.

Taskin Ahmed bowled Madande for 43 off 39 balls to break the stand, but Masakadza (34) stayed at the crease until he was run out on the last ball of the innings.

Put into bat first, Zimbabwe lost Craig Ervine for a duck in the second over.

Mohammad Saifuddin then forced debutant fellow opener Joylord Gumbie (17) to give a catch to Taskin at fine leg.

Mahedi Hasan’s next over saw Brian Bennett run out for 16 with skipper Sikandar Raza out leg before first-ball.

Taskin also sent back Sean Williams and Ryan Burl, both of them also going for golden ducks to make it three in the innings, off back-to-back deliveries in the following over, and Saifuddin dismissed Luke Jongwe for two.

“A lot of seniors went missing, we depend heavily on them in batting and they missed out,” said Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza.

“But hopefully we’ll get back better in the next game.”

Madande was given leg before off Saifuddin on 28 but the decision was reversed after review.

Chittagong hosts the second match of the series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe on Sunday.

The series is Bangladesh’s last before next month’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States and West Indies.

Former captain’s son called up in Zimbabwe squad for Bangladesh tour

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has named a 15-member squad, featuring 26-year-old Johnathan Campbell, who is the son of former national captain Alistair Campbell, to play the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh starting on May 3.

Campbell, a leg-spin bowling all-rounder, has earned his first call-up to the senior team, having previously represented Zimbabwe’s emerging team in the 13th African Games last month.

He contributed with 115 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 126.37 and took one wicket, helping his team win the gold medal.

His father Alistair Campbell led Zimbabwe in 21 Tests and 86 ODIs from 1996 to 2002.

Meanwhile, top-order batter Tadiwanashe Marumani and allrounder Faraz Akram have earned recalls for the Bangladesh tour under the leadership of Sikandar Raza.

Marumani and Akram missed the T20I series against Sri Lanka, which Zimbabwe lost.

Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will square off in the first of the three-match T20I series in Chattogram on 3 May.

The next two matches will be played at the same venue on 5 and 7 May, while Dhaka will host the last two matches on May 10 and 12.

Mushtaq Ahmed appointed as Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed is set to join the Bangladesh cricket team as the spin bowling coach, confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday.

The 1992 World Cup winner will join the Bangladesh team later this month ahead of the T20I series against Zimbabwe and will work with them until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

BCB announced the appointment of Ahmed as the spin bowling coach through a press release.

“Former Pakistan leg-spinner and World Cup winner Mushtaq Ahmed has been appointed Bangladesh National Team Spin Bowling Coach,” the press release stated.

“He will join the side ahead of the preparation camp later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe and will work with the Bangladesh team until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.”

Ahmed has previously served as the spin bowling coach for England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-19) and Pakistan (2020-22).

“It is a great honour for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team as a spin bowling coach,” Mushtaq Ahmed said in a statement released by BCB.

“I am looking forward to the role and want to pass my experience to the players because they are very coachable and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around.

“They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources and the talent. I will try to instil that belief into them. I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the team,” he concluded.

The right-handed bowler took 185 wickets in 52 Tests and 161 wickets in 144 ODIs for Pakistan.

Sri Lanka sweep Bangladesh Test series with crushing win

CHITTAGONG: Lahiru Kumara finished with 4-50 to help Sri Lanka thump Bangladesh by 192 runs in the second Test and sweep the two-match series 2-0 on Wednesday.

The fast bowler dismissed the last man Khaled Ahmed to wrap up a one-sided contest before lunch on the fifth day.

Hosts Bangladesh, chasing a mammoth 511 in their second innings, added just 50 after resuming on 268-7.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz staged a lone fight to stay unbeaten on 81 after completing his sixth Test half-century.

With a Sri Lankan triumph all but inevitable when the day began, Mehidy played some positive strokes to bring up his fifty off 68 balls.

He lost overnight partner Taijul Islam for 14 when the batsman drove off-spinner Kamindu Mendis to Nishan Madushka at gully.

Kamindu finished with 3-32 to go with his unbeaten 92 with the bat in the first innings, earning him the man of the match award.

He was also named player of the series after scoring a hundred in both innings of the first Test.

“The bowlers did their basics on this wicket and the batters did their job as well,” Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva said.

“The batters were a bit disappointed about not getting runs in the first Test, but we have experienced players. I was confident they would get runs,” he added.

“There wasn’t a lot of spin on offer. So I thought about reverse swing as a way to get wickets. The pacers were really on the spot.”

Sri Lankan pacers accounted for 33 of the 40 Bangladesh wickets to fall, a rare feat on Bangladesh’s generally spin-friendly pitches.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said the home side’s poor showing for the red-ball series would provoke some soul-searching.

“If you look at our batting, everyone got set but didn’t get a big score. That’s something to think about,” Shanto said. “If you get set, you have to make a score. We have to play more first-class cricket.”

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs. Prior to that, Sri Lanka won the three-match T20I series 2-1, however, Bangladesh bounced back and won the ODI series by the same margin.

Bangladesh will host Zimbabwe for five T20s in May in their next international engagement, ahead of the T20 World Cup starting in June.

Dominant Sri Lanka inch closer to series sweep over Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG: Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara and Kamindu Mendis took two wickets each to dismantle Bangladesh’s batting lineup and propelled Sri Lanka closer to clean sweep the ongoing two-match Test series.

At the stumps on Day 4 of the ongoing second Test, hosts Bangladesh were 268-7, needing a further 243 runs to square off the series.

Lower middle-order batter Mehidy Hasan Miraz retaliated with an unbeaten 44 and forced the match into the fifth day while Taijul Islam accompanied him with a gutsy 10.

Mominul Haque was the only other batter to put up a fight with a brisk half-century. He made 50 off 56 balls before falling victim to Jayasuriya in the last over of the second session.

His dismissal was followed by a crucial 61-run partnership for the fifth wicket between returning veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das.

Off-spinner Mendis provided Sri Lanka with a much-needed breakthrough as Nishan Madushka took a sharp reflex catch at the silly point to dismiss Shakib on 36.

Das followed in the footsteps of Shakib three overs later as the bottom edge while playing a pull shot drew curtains on his 38-run knock.

Kamindu Mendis broke another important partnership brewing between Mehidy and Shahadat Hossain by trapping the latter leg before on 15.

Opening batter Mahmudul Hasan (24), fellow opener Zakir Hasan (19), and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (20) all perished cheaply.

Resuming at an overnight second innings score of 102-6, Sri Lanka batted just over an hour to add 55 runs to their tally before declaring at 157-7.

Angelo Mathews top-scored for Sri Lanka with 56 runs before he was bowled by his Bangladesh counterpart Shakib after making his 41st Test fifty.

When the declaration came, Jayasuriya was unbeaten on 28 along with Vishwa Fernando, who had scored eight not out.

Debutant pacer Hasan Mahmud led the bowling attack for Bangladesh in the second innings with brilliant figures of 4/65.

Sri Lanka, who never succumbed to a Test series defeat against Bangladesh, humbled the hosts by 328 runs in the first Test at Sylhet.

Dinesh Chandimal flies back home midway through the Chattogram Test

Sri Lanka batter Dinesh Chandimal has left the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh on Tuesday due to a “family medical emergency”.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) took to their official X (formerly Twitter) account to announce Chandimal’s unavailability to further partake in the ongoing second Test while extending their support to the batter.

“Dinesh Chandimal has withdrawn from the team playing the 2nd Test match against Bangladesh with immediate effect due to a ‘family medical emergency.’ Accordingly, the player will return home immediately,” the SLC posted.

Sri Lanka Cricket, his teammates, and the coaching staff fully support Dinesh Chandimal at this moment of need and request that the public respect his and his family’s privacy.

Chandimal was dismissed after scoring nine runs during the second innings on day three yesterday.

A substitute fielder replaced him on the field during Bangladesh’s second innings while chasing a record target of 511.

Sri Lanka set Bangladesh a mammoth target to win the Chattogram Test after declaring their second innings for 157-7 on the fourth day.

Angelo Mathews, unbeaten on 39 overnight, hit the highest score with 56 runs. He was bowled by Shakib Al Hasan after completing his 41st Test fifty.

Prabath Jayasuriya was unbeaten on 28 when the declaration came, along with Vishwa Fernando, who was eight not out.
