Sri Lanka batter equals Javed Miandad’s long-standing Test record

Sri Lanka’s batting prodigy Kamindu Mendis equalled a record held by Pakistan’s former captain and legendary batsman Javed Miandad for the most Test runs after four innings with a stunning display of skill in the game.

The 25-year-old batter has scored 419 runs in the first four innings of his Test career, equaling Javed Miandad’s achievement from 1976.

Kamindu Mendis made his Test debut against Australia in Galle in 2022, scoring 61 runs in the first inning,  and did not have to come to bat for the second time as Sri Lanka thrashed the visitors by an inning and 39 runs.

Mendis hammered 102 and 164 in the second Test of his career against Bangladesh at Sylhet. The 25-year-old batter narrowly missed the third consecutive ton as he made an unbeaten 92, missing partners from the other end.

He missed an opportunity to tie with Mohammad Azharuddin for the most centuries after four test innings as he ran out of partners in the fourth innings.

Kamindu Mendis has amassed an incredible 419 runs, matching the record held by Javed Miandad, with scores of 61, 102, 164, and 92 not out.

In the series against Bangladesh, his only failure came in the second inning of the second Test inning when he was only able to score nine runs.

Pakistan’s former captain and legendary batsman Javed Miandad had also scored 419 runs in his first four Test innings. In his first four innings of the Test, Miandad scored 163, 25 not out, 25, and 206.

Sri Lanka on top in Bangladesh Test despite 2nd innings batting blues

Asitha Fernando claimed 4-34 as Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 178 to take a massive 353-run lead in the first innings of the second Test in Chittagong on Monday.

The visitors decided against enforcing a follow-on but were left struggling with their batting in the second innings, reaching 102-6 at stumps on the third day to extend their lead to 455 runs.

Debutant pacer Hasan Mahmud gave Bangladesh something to smile about with 4-51, while fellow pacer Khaled Ahmed also troubled the Sri Lankan batsmen with 2-29.

But Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on 39 alongside Prabath Jayasuriya, three not out, with the pair looking to extend Sri Lanka’s lead with the help of the tail-enders.

Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando and Jayasuriya earlier chipped in with two each as Sri Lanka claimed nine wickets in two sessions to leave the hosts flattened.

Sri Lanka fast bowling coach Dharshana Gamage praised both sides.

“Both teams’ bowlers, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, bowled really well,” Gamage said.

“We need to score another 50-60 runs, then we will be in a good position. I am pretty sure our bowlers will fight back.”

Zakir Hasan made the highest score for Bangladesh with 54, while Mominul Haque offered some resistance with 33.

“We totally failed with the bat,” Zakir said. “We couldn’t perform our roles, we didn’t play as we were supposed to play.”

Resuming on 55-1 with nightwatchman Taijul Islam, Zakir survived for more than an hour before Bangladesh lost their first wicket of the day.

Sri Lanka ended Bangladesh’s dogged early resistance when Vishwa Fernando, a left-arm quick, swung one in to uproot the leg stump of Zakir.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto looked edgy from the start and faced 11 balls before being dismissed by Jayasuriya for one.

Najmul departed after attempting an on-drive, which was caught at short midwicket by Dimuth Karunaratne.

Vishwa Fernando bowled Taijul for 22 with another in-swinging delivery to reduce Bangladesh to 105-4.

Asitha Fernando trapped Shakib Al Hasan leg-before for 15 and then induced an edge from Liton Das (four) in the same over.

Bangladesh kept losing wickets in clusters.

Shahadat Hossain (eight) was caught by Kamindu Mendis at slip off Kumara and Jayasuriya hit Mehidy Hasan (seven) in front.

Asitha Fernando ended Mominul’s defiant innings before he bowled Khaled for one to wrap up the innings.

Sri Lanka dominated Bangladesh in the first two days to amass 531, the highest Test total without any batsman scoring a century.

Sri Lanka, who have never lost a Test series to Bangladesh, won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.

Sri Lanka rule Bangladesh with 531, but Mendis misses rare feat

Bangladesh were 55-1 in their first innings at stumps on the second day of the second Test after bowling Sri Lanka out for 531 in Chittagong on Sunday.

Opener Zakir Hasan was unbeaten on 28 alongside nightwatchman Taijul Islam on 0 after Lahiru Kumara bowled Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 21.

Sri Lanka made a record 531 runs in their first innings, which was the highest score in Test cricket without any batsman scoring a century.

Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis narrowly missed the feat of a third Test century in consecutive innings.

The left-handed batter remained not out on 92 as last man Asitha Fernando was run out for a duck, leaving him eight short of what would have made him only the fourth Sri Lankan to score three centuries in consecutive innings.

Mendis, who scored 102 and 164 in the first Test, struck Taijul Islam for two sixes in an over to come close to the feat.

But Fernando fell short of his crease in a desperate attempt to change the strike.

Apart from Mendis, who was playing only his third Test, Dhananjaya de Silva (70), Dinesh Chandimal (59), Kusal Mendis (93), Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madhushka (57) also scored a fifty each.

Shakib Al Hasan finished with 3-110 as Sri Lanka made Bangladesh toil for nearly two days after electing to bat first. Sri Lanka resumed the second day with 314-4.

De Silva, like Mendis, who also scored 102 and 108 in the first Test, raised the prospect of scoring 300 on the trot before he was dismissed in the post-lunch session.

Chandimal was the only batsman to be dismissed in the first session, edging Shakib behind the stumps after making 59 runs.

Khaled Ahmed trapped De Silva leg before in the first over after the lunch break.

Khaled could have taken another wicket in his next if Prabath Jayasuriya was not comically dropped by three slip fielders on six.

Mendis was declared caught behind on 35 off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but the decision was reversed after review.

Shakib hit Jayasuriya plumb in front to end his 65-run seventh wicket stand with Mendis, who was dropped by Hasan Mahmud on 60 at deep square leg.

Top-order blitz puts Sri Lanka 314-4 in Bangladesh Test

A top-order batting blitz brought Sri Lanka to 314-4 and left the tourists firmly in command of the second and final Test against Bangladesh on Saturday.

Kusal Mendis top-scored with 93 in Chittagong while openers Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madushka (57) helping power the innings.

Dinesh Chandimal was batting on 34 alongside skipper Dhananjaya de Silva on 15 at stumps.

Bangladesh struggled to make an impact after being put in to bowl, with Sri Lanka batting through the morning session without losing a wicket.

Madushka was run out attempting a double shortly after lunch but Karunaratne and Mendis drove the tourists forward with a 114-run stand.

Hasan sent back Karunaratne, who chopped a delivery into the stumps, before the tea break.

He struck eight fours and a six in his 129-ball innings, surviving a run-out scare on 18 after a mix-up with Madushka while taking a single off Hasan Mahmud.

Shakib Al Hasan denied Mendis his 10th Test century, forcing an edge to Mehidy at second slip.

Hasan picked up his second wicket when Mehidy caught Angelo Mathews (23) from the same spot in the first over after the second new ball.

Chandimal struck two sixes to move past his early shakiness before helping Sri Lanka pass the 300-run mark with a four off Hasan.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning the opening Test by a resounding 328 runs.

Veteran all-rounder Shakib returned for Bangladesh after a long Test absence, and the hosts also handed a debut to Mahmud.

Sri Lanka brought Asitha Fernando in for injured Kasun Rajitha in their only change to the squad from the opening Test.

Shakib last represented Bangladesh at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and his last Test was in April 2023, against Ireland.

Besides his political duties, he is also featuring in the 50-over Dhaka Premier League this month.

Shakib Al Hasan was recalled to the squad by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after the hosts succumbed to a hammering 328-run defeat against Sri Lanka in Sylhet on Monday.

Towhid Hridoy, who is yet to make his Test debut, made way for Shakib in the squad after being left out of Bangladesh’s Playing XI for the first Test.

Uncapped Mushfik Hasan has been ruled out of the second and final Test because of an ankle injury and was consequently replaced by fellow pacer Hasan Mahmud.

The home side was outclassed by Sri Lanka in all departments but their batting unit disappointed the most as they failed to amass 200 runs in either innings.

Bangladesh Test squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Zakir Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, Liton Das, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Shahadat Hossain Dipu, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud.

Kasun Rajitha’s five-fer guides Sri Lanka to thumping win over Bangladesh

SYLHET: Kasun Rajitha claimed his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket as Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh by 328 runs here on Monday to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.

Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 182 in their second innings after lunch on the fourth day, with Rajitha returning with 5-56.

Overnight batsman Mominul Haque scored 87 not out for Bangladesh to delay the inevitable before Lahiru Kumara (2-39) took the final wicket.

Fast bowler Kasun Rajitha claimed the wicket of Taijul Islam in the third over of the morning, trapping the left-hander in front for six.

Mominul, who hit 12 fours and a six, put on a dogged 66-run partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz for the seventh wicket before Rajitha struck again.

Mehidy, on 33, edged Rajitha to Dhananjaya de Silva at second slip.

Rajitha took the wickets of Shoriful Islam (12) and Khaled Ahmed (zero) off consecutive deliveries after the break to complete his five-wicket haul.

Vishwa Fernando was the other pivotal bowler for Sri Lanka with 3-36 as pacemen took all 20 wickets for the visitors in the game.

“The wicket had something for the fast bowlers,” said Sri Lanka captain and player of the match de Silva.

“We were talking about playing late, and what shots to play on this wicket. It paid off at the end of the day.”

Taijul and Mominul resumed Bangladesh’s innings at 47-5 after the top order collapsed a little over an hour before the close of play on Sunday.

“The wicket was good, there was movement early on,” said Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

“We have to improve our new-ball batting. A lot of work has to be done before the next Test, and we are going to have a plan to come back strongly.”

Sri Lanka, who have never lost a Test series in Bangladesh, made 280 in their first innings and Bangladesh replied with 188.

The visitors then made 418 with first-inning century-makers de Silva and Kamindu Mendis both reaching three figures for the second time in the match.

They were only the third pair from the same country to score centuries in each innings of a Test after Australia’s Chappell brothers, Greg and Ian, and Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Ali.

The second and final match of the series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be played in Chittagong from March 30.

Sri Lanka push Bangladesh to brink after de Silva, Mendis centuries

SYLHET: Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis both slammed their second century of the match as Sri Lanka set up a 511-run target for Bangladesh before pushing the hosts to the corner in the first Test on Sunday at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The visitors were all out for 418 in their second innings at Sylhet, with Mendis making 164 runs to go with his 102 in the first innings and De Silva, who also scored 102 runs in the first innings, adding 108.

Sri Lankan pacers began the victory push immediately, reducing Bangladesh to 47-5 at stumps, with 464 more needed for an unlikely win.

Vishwa Fernando claimed 3-13, while Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara each claimed a wicket as Mahmudul Hasan (0), Najmul Hossain Shanto (6), Zakir Hasan (19), Shahadat Hossain (0) and Liton Das (0) all departed.

The sorry display from Bangladesh batsmen came when de Silva and Mendis dominated the bowlers for the better part of the day, becoming only the third pair in Test history to score a century in both innings.

The Chappell brothers, Greg and Ian, of Australia achieved the feat against New Zealand in March 1974, before Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Ali emulated it against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014.

The pair, who shared 202 runs in Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 280 runs, put on 173 runs together this time.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz broke their partnership, before finishing with 4-74 for Bangladesh.

Resuming on 119–5, the visitors lost nightwatchman Fernando (four) early to Khaled Ahmed, before de Silva and Mendis took control.

De Silva brought his second century into the game with a single off Mehidy, before he was dropped by Nahid Rana off Shoriful Islam on 101.

Mehidy ensured the drop did not hurt the team more, soon ending de Silva’s innings, with Zakir taking the catch at short midwicket.

Mendis put away a full toss of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to bring his own hundred off 171.

Mehidy removed Prabath Jayasuriya, who made 25, and Lahiru Kumara off successive deliveries to give Bangladesh some relief.

Mehidy could have grabbed his fifth wicket if Liton Das did not drop Mendis on 133.

Mendis protected last man Rajitha to add 52 runs in the final wicket pair, piling misery on Bangladesh.

Mendis hit Taijul Islam for three sixes in an over to reach his 150 and help the lead exceed 500 runs.

Taijul dismissed Mendis finally to wrap up Sri Lanka’s innings.

Notably, Sri Lanka have never lost a Test series to Bangladesh.

Bowlers’ day in Sylhet as Sri Lanka inch ahead of Bangladesh

SYLHET: 12 wickets fell during the enthralling day as Sri Lanka raced to a dominating 211-run lead against hosts Bangladesh in the ongoing first Test here at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Bangladesh resumed their first innings at an overnight score of 32/3 and could add 156 runs to their total despite Tajiul Islam’s fighting knock.

The hosts had a dismal start to the day as they lost two more wickets — Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shahadat Hossain — in quick succession and had consequently slipped to 83/5.

Following the slump, Islam partnered strongly with wicketkeeper batter Litton Das and pulled the home side out of danger.

The pair added 61 runs for the sixth wicket before Lahiru Kumara cleaned up Das to open the floodgates.

The right-handed batter remained a notable contributor for Bangladesh, scoring 25.

Islam followed in his footsteps around five overs later, falling agonizingly short of his well-deserved half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with an anchoring 47-run knock, which featured six boundaries.

The disciplined Sri Lanka bowling attack then had to put in hard yards to sweep off Bangladesh’s tail as Shoriful Islam (15) and Khaled Ahmed (22) offered resistance with an adamant 40-run stand for the ninth wicket before both fell victim to Vishwa Fernando.

Sri Lanka, despite having a 92-run advantage, had a shaky start to their second innings as they lost Nishan Madushanka (10) and Kusal Mendis (3) with just 32 runs on the board.

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews partnered with Dinesh Chandimal to anchor the innings briefly before both perished in quick succession, bringing the equation down to 64/4.

Sri Lanka’s batting mainstay Dimuth Karunaratne was then joined by his skipper de Silva in the middle and the duo took Sri Lanka past the 100-run mark before the former perished briefly after amassing his half-century.

Karunaratne remained the notable run-getter for Sri Lanka in the second innings with a 101-ball 52 which featured seven boundaries and a six.

Sri Lanka were 119/5 at stumps on the eventful second day of the first Test with their skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Vishwa Fernando at the crease.

Pacers put Sri Lanka in control as Bangladesh face early stutter

SYLHET: Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis’ fighting centuries, followed by a rampant opening bowling spell led Sri Lanka to take early control of the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh.

Sent into bat first, Sri Lanka managed to accumulate 280 runs in the first innings despite a marathon 202-run partnership between Mendis and de Silva.

The touring side, after getting off to a shaky start, lost wickets at an alarming rate and thus consequently slipped to 57/5.

Following the debacle, Mendis joined his captain in the middle and the duo, partnered strongly to pull the visitors out of danger.

They batted sensibly for more than 40 overs and recorded gutsy centuries in the process before Nahid Rana provided a much-needed breakthrough to Bangladesh by getting rid of Mendis.

Sri Lanka captain de Silva followed in his footsteps a couple of overs later as Bangladesh forced a comeback.

Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva remained the joint top scorers for Sri Lanka, scoring 102 runs each.

Bangladesh bowlers then ran through the toothless Sri Lanka batting tail and consequently booked the touring side on 280.

Khaled Ahmed and Nahid Rana led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with three wickets each while Tajiul Islam and Shoriful Islam struck out a batter apiece.

In response to 280, Bangladesh were in a state of bother when the stumps were called as the home side were 32/3 with opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (9) and night watchman Taijul Islam (0) on the crease.

Towhid Hridoy replaces Mushfiqur Rahim in Bangladesh squad for Sri Lanka Tests

Bangladesh on Wednesday handed batter Towhid Hridoy his maiden Test call-up, replacing injured Mushfiqur Rahim in the two-match series against Sri Lanka, beginning on Friday in Sylhet.

Batting mainstay Mushfiqur Rahim was ruled out of the series due to a thumb injury he sustained in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Chittagong on Monday.

The 36-year-old wicketkeeper was struck by a delivery from Taskin Ahmed in the second over.

He continued to keep wickets after getting treatment from the team physio, taking four crucial catches.

He later played an unbeaten 37-run knock to help Bangladesh chase 236 runs to clinch the ODI series 2-1.
