Mushfiqur Rahim ruled out of Sri Lanka Tests with thumb injury

Bangladesh wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim has been ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, owing to a thumb injury.

Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed that the 36-year-old batter will require at least three weeks to recover from the injury, ruling him out of the Test series, which will commence on 22 March.

“After the match, Mushfiqur [Rahim] underwent an X-ray examination in Dhaka, which revealed an avulsion fracture on the MIP joint of his right thumb,” Bayjedul said.

“He is currently undergoing conservative management for his injury and is expected to be sidelined for around three to four weeks, consequently ruling him out of participation in the Test series against Sri Lanka.”

Rahim suffered the injury during the third ODI against Sri Lanka as he was struck by a delivery from Taskin Ahmed in the second over.

He continued to keep wickets after getting treatment from the team physio, taking four crucial catches. He later played an unbeaten 37-run knock to help Bangladesh chase 236 runs to clinch the ODI series 2-1.

He was the second-highest run-getter for Bangladesh in the ODI series with 135 runs from three innings.

He is also the most-capped Test player in Bangladesh history with 88 Test matches and has scored the most runs for the country – 5676 runs at an average of 38.09.

The Bangladesh selectors have not announced the replacement for the veteran wicketkeeper yet.

Bangladesh lost the T20I series against Sri Lanka 2-1 but made a resounding comeback to win the ODI series with the same margin.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s return to Test cricket hindered

DUBAI: Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga’s return to Test cricket has been hit by a roadblock as the all-rounder was slapped by the International Cricket Council (ICC) with a two-match ban.

Consequently, Hasaranga will miss the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, scheduled to commence on March 22.

Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match” during the third ODI of the recently-concluded series against Bangladesh.

The incident occurred in the 37th over of Bangladesh’s innings when Wanindu Hasaranga snatched his cap from one of the umpires and ridiculed the umpiring in the match.

He received a 50 per cent fine and accumulated three demerit points for his offence. This brought his total demerit points to eight in a 24-month period.

The all-rounder was already on five demerit points after receiving three demerit points in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla last month. Following this, he was suspended for two T20Is against Bangladesh.

Now, with the addition of the latest demerit points, he has breached the threshold of eight demerit points, which, pursuant to article 7.6 of the Code, have been converted into four suspension points.

The four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first – Hasaranga will therefore miss the two ICC World Test Championship Tests against Bangladesh.

Remember, the star all-rounder on Tuesday, came out of Test retirement and was subsequently named in the Sri Lanka squad for the Test series against Bangladesh.

Wanindu Hasaranga announced to hang up his boots from Test cricket last year after representing Sri Lanka in four Tests.

Wanindu Hasaranga comes out of Test retirement for Bangladesh Tests

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has come out of Test retirement and was subsequently named in the squad for the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh.

Hasaranga, who announced to hang up his boots from Test cricket last year, has returned to the fold for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series against Bangladesh, scheduled to commence on March 22.

The leg-spin all-rounder will link up with Prabath Jayasuriya, Ramesh Mendis and all-rounders Nishan Peiris and Kamindu Mendis to form a strong spin bowling for Sri Lanka.

All-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva, who was named Sri Lanka’s Test captain earlier this year, will continue to lead the side with wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis as his deputy.

The two-match Test series between hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka begins on March 22 in Sylhet with the second Test in Chittagong from March 30.

It is pertinent to mention that the two sides engaged in a three-match each T20I and ODI series.

The visitors sealed the T20I series 2-1 while the ODI series was won by the hosts.

Mushfiqur Rahim mocks Angelo Mathews with timed-out celebration

CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim on Monday, mocked Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews by mimicking his famous timed-out dismissal, which occurred at the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

The incident took place when the hosts Bangladesh were celebrating their 2-1 ODI series victory over arch-rivals Sri Lanka.

As the Bangladesh squad gathered to pose with the trophy, Rahim walked out with a helmet.

Mushfiqur Rahim was enacting as if there was something wrong with the helmet to mock Angelo Mathews for his famous timed-out dismissal during the ODI World Cup 2023.

Remember, the Sri Lankan team celebrated their T20I series victory over Bangladesh by simultaneously pointing and tapping on the watch in a bid to take a dig at the Tigers.

It is worth mentioning here that Angelo Mathews became the first player to suffer a timed-out dismissal in the history of international cricket.

Mathews came down to bat in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings after the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s wicket.

The former captain took more than two minutes to take strike after having issues with his helmet due to a broken strap. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a “timed out” dismissal, which was upheld by the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth.

The ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions pertaining to “timed out” dismissals reads thus:

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Sri Lanka, Bangladesh hit by key injuries for ODI decider

Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka will miss the rest of the tour of Bangladesh while home paceman Tanzim Hasan Sakib is also out of the decisive third and final ODI on Monday after both suffered hamstring injuries.

Both players have been vital for their respective sides in a one-day series dominated by pace bowlers, picking up four wickets each in the first two matches.

The series is tied 1-1 after hosts Bangladesh won the opener by six wickets, with Sri Lanka taking the second by three wickets.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said Madushanka suffered a hamstring problem during the second ODI on Friday.

“Madushanka will not take part in the ongoing tour as the bowler will return to start rehabilitation work,” SLC said.

“We got the report on his injury only today [Sunday], and it shows a small tear,” Sri Lanka team manager Mahinda Halangoda said.

“It’s a new injury. We’re not yet sure how long it will take for him to recover, but he’ll have to be assessed again when he goes home by the medical team at the high-performance centre. For now, we know he’s out of the ODI tomorrow for sure.”

Tanzim had similarly injured his hamstring while bowling in the nets on Sunday.

“Tanzim is experiencing pain and discomfort of his right hamstring. He did not feel any better at training today and is not fit to play tomorrow,” national team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

“He will be sent to Dhaka today for his scan,” Bangladesh Cricket Board doctor Monzur Hussain said.

Bangladesh have dropped opener Liton Das for Monday’s decider in Chittagong after he was dismissed for consecutive ducks in the first two matches.

Uncapped Jaker Ali Anik took his place in the Bangladesh squad for the match.

Sri Lanka won the earlier T20I series 2-1. The two sides are also set to play two Tests.

Bangladesh to tour USA for three-match T20I series ahead of T20 World Cup

The Bangladesh Men’s Cricket Team will tour the United States of America (USA) for a three-match T20I series ahead of this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced Thursday.

Bangladesh’s historic tour to the USA meant that the two teams would face each other in the shortest format for the first time.

The BCB sees the three-match series as an opportunity to prepare for the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

“For the Bangladesh Team, this tour serves as an ideal platform to acclimatise to the conditions ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024,” Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, CEO, Bangladesh Cricket Board, said.

“We recognise the significance of this preparatory phase and are committed to making the most of this invaluable experience.”

Bangladesh have thus far played only two T20Is in the USA, both against the West Indies in 2018.

The Asian Tigers will start their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the country, taking on Sri Lanka and South Africa in Dallas and New York respectively.

Prior to the historic series against Bangladesh, the USA will host Canada for a five-match T20I series,

All eight matches of the two bilateral series will be played at Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston, Texas.

“Ahead of the important Men’s T20 World Cup, these games will be vital for our team to get their working combinations, build team cohesion, and fine-tune strategies,” said Venu Pisike, Chairman of USA Cricket.

Notably, Bangladesh are placed in group D of the T20 World Cup 2024, alongside Sri Lanka, South Africa, Nepal and the Netherlands.

Whereas, the USA are part of Group A which also features India, Pakistan, Canada and Ireland.

Najmul Hossain steers Bangladesh to series-equalling win over Sri Lanka

SYLHET: Skipper Najmul Hossain led Bangladesh from the front with an unbeaten 53 for an emphatic eight-wicket win against Sri Lanka to level the three-match T20I series 1-1 on Wednesday.

Liton Das (36) and Towhid Hridoy (32 not out) provided him good support, helping Bangladesh race to 170-2 in 18.1 overs after their bowlers had restricted Sri Lanka to 165-5 electing to bowl first.

Liton and Soumya Sarkar (26) set up the win with a 68-run opening stand before Matheesha Pathirana dismissed both to give Sri Lanka a glimmer of hope.

The visitors felt aggrieved when Soumya was declared out, caught behind off Binura Fernando for 14 before the third umpire overturned the decision.

The replay showed a clear spike on the bat, but the umpire reckoned it came after the ball passed the bat, leaving Sri Lankan fielders thunderstruck.

Pathirana lifted their mood with strikes in successive overs, but Najmul and Towhid put in 87 runs for the third wicket to deny them further success.

Najmul completed the win with a six off Dasun Shanaka, which also brought his fourth T20I fifty.

Najmul credited his bowlers for restricting Sri Lanka to a gettable score.

“All credit to the boys, especially to our bowlers, really happy with the way we bowled,” he said.

Sri Lanka, who won Monday’s opening match by three runs, saw stop-start batting as several batsmen got starts but none could make it big.

Kamindu Mendis scored the highest with 37 off 27 balls, while Kusal Mendis chipped in with 36 off 22 balls.

Kamindu and Kusal put on 66 runs for the second wicket after a slow start to give Sri Lanka a platform for a big score.

Soumya dismissed Kusal to break the partnership to halt Sri Lanka’s progress.

Meanwhile, Kamindu was run out after hitting three fours and two sixes in a 27-ball innings.

Stand-in skipper Charith Asalanka hit 28 off 14 balls, with three sixes and a four.

“We were 20-25 runs short… as batsmen, we have to make runs in these conditions, it’s hard for bowlers in these conditions,” Asalanka said after the match.

Mahedi bowled Asalanka before he inflicted too much damage on the home side.

However, Angelo Mathews and Shanaka ensured Sri Lanka did not lose their way completely.

The pair added 53 runs for the sixth wicket, with Mathews leading their way with 32 not out. Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s bowling hero in the opening match, was unbeaten on 20.

Dasun Shanaka guides Sri Lanka to dramatic T20I win over Bangladesh

Dasun Shanaka held his nerve under pressure to take two wickets in the final over, snatching a dramatic three-run win for Sri Lanka in the opening T20I of a three-match series against Bangladesh in Sylhet on Monday.

Set a target of 207 runs, lower middle-order batsman Jaker Ali took Bangladesh close with his maiden fifty before Shanaka ended his 34-ball innings of 68 with the third ball of the last over.

Shoriful Islam hit a four from the next ball, leaving Bangladesh requiring six from their last two balls.

But the hosts could manage only two runs to be restricted to 203-8, with Shanaka, who also dismissed Rishad Hossain in the first ball of the final over, finishing with 2-36.

Former skipper Angelo Mathews claimed 2-17 to inflict some early damage on the Bangladesh innings before veteran Mahmudullah Riyad struck 54 off 31 balls to revive the hopes of the home side.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis earlier slammed a fifty each to guide Sri Lanka to 206-3 after Bangladesh sent them in.

Samarawickrama struck an unbeaten 61 off 48 balls after Mendis hit 59 off 36 balls as the visitors overcame a slow start to put up an imposing total.

Stand-in skipper Charith Asalanka played his part with an unbeaten 44 from 21 balls.

Mendis and Samarawickrama shared 96 runs for the third wicket after Sri Lanka lost their first two wickets for 37 runs.

Shoriful removed Avishka Fernando for four with the second ball of the innings before Taskin Ahmed had Kamindu Mendis caught by Soumya Sarkar at midwicket for 19.

Mendis hit leg-spinner Rishad for four and two sixes off consecutive balls to race to his fifty off 27 balls.

Rishad returned for his next spell to exact revenge as Mahmudullah took a well-judged catch at long off boundary to end the innings of Mendis.

Asalanka joined Samarawickrama to continue the assault, adding 73 for the unbroken fourth wicket, including 24 runs from the last over of the innings bowled by Mustafizur Rahman.

The series marks the start of Sri Lanka’s month-long tour of Bangladesh, which also includes three one-day internationals and two Tests.

Bangladesh announce new coaches ahead of Sri Lanka series

Bangladesh on Tuesday named former Glamorgan cricketer and Bermuda international David Hemp as the batting coach of the national men’s team for two years.

Along with Hemp, former New Zealand all-rounder Andre Adams will join the team as bowling coach for the same duration, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a statement.

The duo will begin their tenure with the home series against Sri Lanka in March, the BCB said.

Hemp, 53, who scored more than 15,000 runs in first-class cricket for Glamorgan, Free State and Warwickshire, and represented Bermuda in 24 one-day internationals, is currently in charge of Bangladesh’s high-performance team.

He was the head coach of the Pakistan women’s team from 2020 to 2022 and was also the head coach of the Victoria State women’s team and the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League.

New bowling coach Adams, 48, who replaces South African great Allan Donald in the role, represented New Zealand in 47 matches across all formats.

He also worked as the New Zealand bowling coach in the recent T20I series against Pakistan and was Australia’s assistant coach in the 2022–23 series against South Africa.

Former Sri Lanka batsman Chandika Hathurusinghe is currently the head coach of the Bangladesh men’s team.

New Zealand win third T20I to square series with Bangladesh

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner took four wickets as they beat Bangladesh by 17 runs in a rain-affected third and final Twenty20 international on Sunday to draw the series 1-1.

After dismissing the tourists for 110 in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand’s top-order collapsed to 49-5 before Jimmy Neesham and Santner recovered to reach 95-5 off 14.4 overs.

When heavy rain halted play, the Black Caps were comfortably ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) target, thanks largely to an unbeaten 28 from all-rounder Neesham.

The result denied Bangladesh a first series victory on New Zealand soil in any format, having lost the preceding ODI series 2-1.

“Our bowlers did the job up front keeping them to 110 and it’s good to get across the line in what’s been a pretty tough-fought series,” Santner said.

“It got quite tight in the end today. Credit to Bangladesh, their bowlers have bowled extremely well. They put us under some real pressure again.”

After asking Bangladesh to bat first on a lively Bay Oval pitch, Santner claimed 4-16 off his four overs, stifling an innings that was already struggling at 41-3 when he was introduced.

Seamers Tim Southee, Adam Milne and Ben Sears all took two wickets.

Milne (2-23) removed Bangladesh captain and top-scorer Najmul Hossain Shanto for 17 when he skied a full-pitched delivery to point.

Shanto rued the fact that he and four other Bangladesh batsmen reached double figures, but all failed to convert into a substantial score.

“The bowlers did a great job but the batsmen didn’t get runs today,” he said.

“In T20s the top of the order is very important. Our batsmen got starts, like 15 or 17, but they’re not taking the game deep.”

Four of New Zealand’s top order were dismissed for one run and when Finn Allen followed after scoring 38, Neesham held the innings together as the storm clouds gathered, with solid support from Santner who was unbeaten on 18.

Seam bowler Shoriful Islam took 2-17 off 3.4 overs.

Bangladesh won the first game in Napier on Wednesday by five wickets, before Friday’s second match was abandoned after 11 overs because of rain in Mount Maunganui.
