Marsh’s century powers Scorchers to victory

HOBART: Mitchell Marsh scored a brilliant century to help Perth Scorchers beat Hobart Hurricanes by a massive 53-runs margin in their Big Bash League fixture.

Batting first, Scorchers, found themselves in trouble, losing first two wickets for just 33 runs. Colin Munro bagged a duck, while Kurtis Patterson scored 13.

The Scorchers kept losing wickets, but, Marsh, stood firm at the other end; keeping the scoreboard ticking single handedly. The batter scored 100 off just 60 balls, laced with six boundaries and five sixes.

Later, Laurie Evans, also played a superb knock of 40; facing just 24 balls, he smashed five boundaries and a six. Evans’ heroics down the order, assisted the Scorchers to amass a massive total of 182/5 in 20 overs.

For Hurricanes, Nathan Ellis starred; picking two wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane, Scott Boland, and Joel Paris took one wicket apiece.

Chasing 183, Hurricanes, halted by a poor start, losing first two wickets for just seven runs. The skipper, Matthew Wade scored just four, while Caleb Jewell managed to score two.

D’Arcy Short and Ben McDermott, however, showed resilience, recorded an important 69-runs partnership before McDermott fell short. The batter scored a brilliant 41 off just 29 balls, including three boundaries and as many sixes.

Hurricanes then, began to lose wickets at an alarming rate, Short too, sent back, and the side dismissed on a skimpy 129; losing the match by 53 runs.

Tymal Mills starred for the Scorchers; picking three wickets and initiated the collapse. Ashton Agar and Andrew Tye each picked two wickets. Whereas, Ashton Tunner, Peter Hatzoglou, and Jason Behrendorff shared one wicket apiece.

Following this victory, Scorchers have extended their unbeaten run in the league and are at the top of the points table, while Hurricanes are at fifth.

CARRARA: Sam Heazlett and James Bazley played brilliant innings to drive Brisbane Heat to a five-wicket victory against Melbourne Renegades, their first in Big Bash League (BBL). 

Heat, chasing 141, were off to a decent start, the opening pair provided a decent 46-run partnership before Chris Lynn dismissed on 32, he faced just 15 balls and smashed five boundaries and a six.

Ben Duckett and Max Bryant had a brief partnership of 19 runs before Bryant dismissed on 18, facing 17 balls.

Soon after, the Heat began to lose wickets in quick succession, slipped to 107/5 in the 14th over. However, the star for the side, Heazlett, played a gritty knock of unbeaten 44 off 29 balls, laced with one boundary and three sixes.

Bazley too played a sensible inning, remained not-out on 16 off just 12 balls to help Heat romp home with five wickets.

For Renegades, Zahir Khan claimed two wickets, while Jack Prestwidge, Mohammad Nabi, and Kane Richardson each took a wicket.

Batting first, Renegades too, started decently, the opening pair provided a 38-runs partnership before Sam Harper dismissed on 12.

Mackenzie Harvey and Nic Maddinson then posted a valuable 46-runs stand, the pair appeared solid but, Maddinson fell short and dismissed on 19. He was a touch too slow for his score as the batter faced 21 balls before getting dismissed.

The Renegades’ wickets began to tumble at an alarming rate, but, Harvey stood firm at the other end, ticking the scoreboard single-handedly. He top-scored with an unbeaten 71 off 56 balls, laced with eight boundaries. Renegades, eventually, finished at 140/6 in 20 overs.

For Heat, Bazley starred, with three wickets. Whereas, Xavier Bartlett, Liam Guthrie, and Mitchell Swepson shared one wicket apiece.

SYDNEY: Andre Russell and Glenn Maxwell played brilliant innings to help Melbourne Stars defeat Sydney Thunder by six wickets in their fixture of Big Bash League.

Stars, chasing 152, were off to a poor start, losing their opener Joe Clarke with just 13 runs on the board. Clarke bagged a four-ball duck. Marcus Stoinis and Nick Larkin, however, appeared solid but could not hold on for long as Larkin fell short, scoring just six of 11 balls.

Stoinis, however, played a sensible inning and scored 31 off 30 balls, including three boundaries alongside his captain, Maxwell, who scored quickfire 40 off 25 deliveries, putting his side on to the driving seat. He smashed three boundaries and two sixes.

Both the batters, dismissed on the consecutive ball, and the momentum appeared to have shifted the Sixers’ way but, Russell went berserk and smashed unbeaten 42 off 21 balls, laced with one boundary and five sixes. His valiant innings helped Stars successfully chase down the total in the 18th over.

For Thunder, Tanveer Sangha bagged two wickets, while Ben Cutting and Nathan McAndrew each struck out a batter.

Batting first, Thunder’s batters struggled from the beginning and were halted by the collapse earlier in their top order, losing four wickets for 65 runs. Alex Hales, however, showed resistance and could not go deep, scored a gritty 28 off 21 balls, including four boundaries and a six.

Alex Ross, however, played a valiant inning, scoring 77 off 49 balls, laced with four boundaries and as many sixes. He remained the top-scorer for his side. The rest of the batters could not go big and Thunder, in the end, restricted to 151/5 in 20 overs.

For Stars, Qais Ahmed and Brody Couch took two wickets each, while Maxwell struck out a batter.

Following this victory, Stars have now claimed the third position on the points table, while Thunder is at sixth.

Melbourne Stars beat Sydney Sixers in a nail-biter

MELBOURNE: Melbourne Stars beat Sydney Sixers by four runs in a nail-biting contest of the Big Bash League at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

Adam Zampa bowled the game’s final over, successfully defending 11 runs to aid his team stun the Sixers by four runs in a thriller.

Chasing 166, Sixers were off to a poor start. The opening pair could only provide a 20-runs foundation, losing two wickets for just 29 runs. Matthew Gilkes and Sam Billings, however, showed the character and batter sensibly to pull their side back into the game.

Gilkes and Billings recorded a brilliant 89-runs partnership before Billings dismissed on 43. Soon after, Daniel Sams was also dismissed after scoring just one. Gilkes tried to fight back, but, he too, got dismissed and the Stars slipped to 135/5.

The Sixers’ lower order could not go big in the end, eventually, losing the match by just four runs.

Gilkes top-scored with 56 off 49 balls, including four boundaries and a six.

For Stars, Nathan Coulter-Nile took two wickets, while Zampa and Brody Couch each claimed a wicket.

Batting first, Stars too, were off to a poor start, losing their first two wickets for just 31 runs. Their openers, Marcus Stoinis and Joe Clarke, both scored 13.

After a poor start, Glenn Maxwell, along with Nick Larkin, showed fightback but Maxwell could not hold on for long and dismissed on 16. Larkin, however, then partnered strongly with Hilton Cartwright, adding 80 runs into the team’s total. The pair batted brilliantly to help their side post a decent total of 165 in 20 overs.

Cartwright scored 42 off 30 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes, followed by their top scorer, Larkin, who smashed unbeaten 52 off 43 balls laced with five boundaries.

For Sixers, Tanveer Sangha claimed two wickets, while Nathan McAndrew struck out a batter.

Perth Scorchers beat Brisbane Heat in a thriller

PERTH: Perth Scorchers beat Brisbane Heat by six runs in a nail-biting contest of the Big Bash League at the Perth Stadium on Wednesday.

Jason Behrendorff, bowled the final over of the match, defending 17 runs successfully to help his side defeat Heat by six runs in a thriller.

Chasing 154, Heat were off to a poor start. The opening pair could only provide a 12-runs foundation, losing two wickets for just 16 runs. The opener, Chris Lynn, however, tried to retaliate but was too slow for his 27, facing 33 balls.

As the side were losing wickets at an alarming rate, Sam Heazlett and Xavier Bartlett showed fighting spirit, but, could not get their side to the victory. Heazlett smashed 34 runs off mere 17 balls laced with two boundaries and three sixes, while Bartlett scored unbeaten 34 off 25 balls including five boundaries.

The top and lower order failure halted the Heat from pulling off the victory, and the side were eventually, bowled out for 151.

For Scorchers, Matthew kelly starred, taking four wickets, while Andrew Tye claimed two wickets. Ashton Agar, Behrendorff and Peter Hatzoglou each struck out a batter.

Batting first, the Scorchers fumbled a little as the side lost their opener, Colin Munro (3) at a combine score of seven.

However, Cameron Bancroft, along with Kurtis Patterson batted sensibly to keep their side out of expected danger. The pair added valuable 68 runs into the team total, helped their side to post a decent total of 157/6 in 20 overs. Bancroft scored 25 off 21 balls including four boundaries, while Patterson top-scored with 55 off 30 balls laced with six boundaries and two sixes.

Later, the captain, Ashton Turner along with Laurie Evans played handy innings to help their side finish strongly.

For Heat, Cameron Gannon picked two wickets. Whereas, James Bazley, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Liam Guthrie and Bartlett shared one wicket apiece.

Following this victory, Scorchers has moved up to the third position, while Heat remained at seventh position.

LAUNCESTON: Moises Henriques’ heroics helped Sydney Sixers beat Hobart Hurricane by 14-runs in the fourth match of Big Bash League season 11 here at Aurora Stadium on Wednesday.

Sixers’ Henriques played a captain’s knock to help his side amass a decent 144-run total in their allotted 20 overs. Henrique scored magnificent 73 off 48 balls laced with six boundaries and two maximums.

The Sixers were off to a poor start, losing five wickets for just 39 runs. Tom Curran, however, stood up for his team and put on an important partnership with his skipper. The pair added 62-runs partnership, taking the team in commanding position. Curran scored sensible 27 off 21 balls including four boundaries.

Following his departure the side lost their remaining four wickets in quick succession and the Sixers, eventually, restricted to 144/9 in 20 overs.

Thomas Rogers claimed three wickets, while Nathan Ellis claimed two wickets. Whereas, Sandeep Lamichhane, Tim David and Joel Paris each struck out a batter.

In reply, Hurricanes were off to a decent start as their openers provided a solid opening stand of 38-runs. Soon after, both the openers were sent back to the pavilion at a combine score of 41.

Peter Handscomb and Caleb Jewell, however, showed resistance. Both the batters played gritty knocks but could not go deep to get their side over the line. Jewell scored 20 off 11 balls including one boundary and as many sixes, while Handscomb, top-scored with 47 off 31 balls laced with three boundaries and two maximums.

Following their departure, no other batter could really make an impact, and the side were restricted to 130/8 in 20 overs, lost the match by 14 runs.

Curran was the stand-out bowler for the Sixers, taking three wickets, while Hayden Kerr took two wickets. Benjamin Manenti, Chris Jordan and Steve O’Keefe each struck out a batter.

Henriques, for his heroics, was adjudged as the player of the match.

MELBOURNE: Melbourne Renegades beat Adelaide Strikers by two runs in the thriller of the Big Bash League at the Docklands Stadium on Tuesday.

James Pattinson, bowled the final over of the match, defending nine runs successfully to help his side defeat Strikers by two runs in a nail-biting contest.

Chasing 154, Strikers were off to a decent start. The opening pair provided a decent 45-run stand, but both the openers were sent back to the pavilion on a combined score of 50. Jake Weatherald scored 18 off 17 balls including two boundaries, while Matthew Short smashed 29 off 18 balls laced with one boundary and two sixes.

Later, Harry Nielsen struck 30 including just one boundary, he was a touch too slow for his top-score for the side.

Soon after, the wickets began to tumble and the Strikers were reduced to 151/8 in 20 overs, losing the game by just two runs.

Zahir Khan was the stand-out bowler for his side, taking three wickets, while Will Sutherland took two wickets. Kane Richardson, Pattinson and Reece Topley each struck out a batter.

Batting first, Renegades also started their innings well as their openers put on a solid 65-run stand. Soon after, the wickets began to fall at an alarming rate, which pretty much slowed down the proceedings and Renegades were eventually restricted to 153/9 in 20 overs. The side lost their last seven wickets for just 39 runs.

Peter Siddle bagged three wickets for Strikers, while Daniel Worrall and George Garton each took two wickets. Whereas, Rashid Khan and Short shared one wicket apiece.

Sydney Thunder beat Brisbane Heat in Big Bash League’s second match

CANBERRA: Sydney Thunder beat Brisbane Heat by seven wickets in the second game of the Big Bash League at the Manuka Oval on Monday.

After being invited to bat first, in the second match of the tournament. Heat’s batters struggled from the start, losing two wickets for just 16 runs.

Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett, on the other hand, showed resistance and put on a strong 83-run partnership. The pair looked solid but could not go big to help their side post a decent total. Failures from the rest of batters also halted the Heat and the side were eventually restricted to 140/8.

Heazlett scored 42 runs off 37 balls laced with three boundaries, while Duckett smashed 46 off 35 balls, including four boundaries.

Thunder, in response to Heat’s 140, also started off poorly, losing three wickets for 32 runs. The side seemed to be in all sorts of trouble, but, Sam Billings and Alex Ross recorded a match winning 89-run partnership and get their side to victory.

Billings scored 44* off 36 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and a maximum, while Alex smashed a magnificent 61* off 46, including seven boundaries and two sixes.

For Heat, Liam Guthrie took two wickets, while Xavier Bartlett struck out a batter.

Ross, for his brilliant knock of 61* and two catches, was adjudged as the player of the match.

Following this victory, Thunder has claimed the second position on the points table, while Heat are at third.

Sixers thump Stars to start Big Bash League on a winning note

SYDNEY: Josh Philippe and Moises Henrique partnered strongly to help Sydney Sixers thump Melbourne Stars by 152-runs in the opening match of Big Bash League season 11 here at Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. 

Philippe and Henrique smoked 102 runs together as the Sixers amassed a massive 213-run total in the allotted 20 overs. Philippe smashed 83 runs off 47 balls including eight boundaries and three maximums, while Henriques scored an unbeaten 76 off 38 balls, including eight boundaries and three sixes.

Earlier, James Vince struck 44 off 29 including eight boundaries to give the Sixers a strong start in the first inning.

For Stars, Brody Couch bagged two wickets. Whereas, Glenn Maxwell and Sam Rainbird each struck out a batter.

In reply, Sixers bowling attack trapped Stars batters completely. They were bowled out for skimpy 61 runs in 11.1 overs. Hilton Cartwright scored 10 followed by highest run-scorer of the side, Peter Nevill with 17 runs.

Steve O’Keefe bagged four wickets, Medium-pacer Sean Abbott managed to take three scalps. Hayden Kerr bagged two while Tom Curran took a wicket.
