Spain edge Colombia to win second consecutive FIFA U17 Women’s WC

MUMBAI: Defending champions Spain successfully lifted the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup title for the second time in a row with a 1-0 victory over first-time finalists Colombia.

Colombia, who had enjoyed a dream run in the mega event; making their way into the final, have had a heartbreaking end to their expedition as an own goal from their defender Ana María Guzmán Zapata in the 82nd minute granted Spain an easy victory.

Consequently, Spain eked out a solitary goal to retain the title they claimed in 2018.

Cristina’s goal, which came off the rebound after the Colombian goalkeeper had initially stopped it, gave Spain the lead two minutes into the second half.

The goal, however, was overturned by a VAR review, thus the score remained 0-0. Cristina was found to have touched the ball with her hand.

It is pertinent to mention that Spain and Colombia also came face to face in the group stages with the former emerging victorious 1-0.

MARGAO: Defending champions Spain edged past Germany in a hard-fought second semi-final, while Colombia downed Nigeria 6-5 on penalties as the two sides set to collide in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup summit clash on Sunday.

The exciting semifinal between the two teams remained equally balanced in regulation time despite some close attempts from both ends.

Spain came close to scoring in the 10th minute when Vicky Lopez broke clear down the left and fired in a magnificent cross that Cristina Libran headed against the crossbar.

The enthralling semifinal remained evenly balanced in the second half as well and it seemed to have entered the shootout before Spain broke the deadlock.

Lucia Corrales scored the match-winning goal in the 90th minute, poking the ball in from close range to power her team to the final on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Colombia beat Nigeria 6-5 on penalties after full-time ended goalless, in the semi-final earlier here.

Comfort Folorunsho botched her sudden death penalty, giving Colombia the victory in a game in which the Flamingos couldn’t string three passes together.

Following their respective semifinal triumphs, Spain and Colombia will lock horns in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final on Sunday.

Lopez powers Spain to seal FIFA U17 Women’s WC semifinals berth

MARGAO: Vicky Lopez’s twin late strikes lifted defending champions Spain from 0-1 down to a comprehensive 2-1 victory over Japan in the fourth quarterfinal to book a semifinal spot in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2022.

The exciting quarterfinal between the two teams remained equally balanced in the first half despite some close attempts from both ends.

Spain, however, spoiled the opportunity to claim an early lead as Carla Camacho missed the penalty in the 37th minute following a foul by Toko Koga.

Japan took the field with greater determination in the second half and launched the attack on the Spanish defence.

The domination soon turned into a goal when Momoko Tanikawa hit a long-range stunner to hand her side an early lead.

The defending champions held their nerves calm despite the deficit and kept attacking on the counter. Lopez then neutralized Japan’s lead – following a melee in the penalty box – with a perfectly targeted strike.

Spain’s counterattack left Japan panicking and as a result, gaps began to emerge in their defence. Lopez – fuelled with momentum – made the most of the situation and struck again in the dying minutes of second-half injury time and powered her side to a thrilling victory.

The defending champions Spain will now face Germany in the second semifinal on October 26.

Meanwhile, in another quarterfinal, Colombia breezed past Tanzania 3-0 to end their dream run in the debut mega event.

Colombia launched an early attack on Tanzania and got their first breakthrough within the first three minutes when captain Linda Caicedo beat Zulfa Makau with ease.

The spirited Tanzanian side suffered yet another blow just after 13 minutes when Yesica Munoz headed Cristina Motta’s cross into the net.

Colombia piled misery on Tanzania as Gabriela Salazar struck for her side with a spot-kick in the 32nd minute.

Nigeria sink USA on penalties, book maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s WC semifinals berth

MUMBAI: Nigeria edged past the United States of America (USA) with a 4-3 penalty kick shootout to qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup semifinals for the first time.

The two sides engaged in an evenly-contested match and remained level at 1-1 at the regulation time as USA’s Amalia Villarreal neutralized Nigeria’s early lead in the 40th minute.

Earlier, Nigeria’s Omamuzo Edafe netted the ball in the 27th minute to hand her side an early lead.

The thrilling quarterfinal entered into a penalty shootout after the two sides could not be separated in regulation time.

Edidiong Etim, Edet Offiong, Miracle Usani and Omamuzo Edafe scored for Nigeria in the shootout while Folorunsho missed the target.

Emeri Adames, Taylor Suarez and Mia Bhuta scored, on the other hand, scored for the USA, while Emri and Jackson missed from the penalty spot.

Nigerian goalkeeper Chikasmo Jiwuaku made a crucial stop on the USA’s fifth and final shot in the intensely competitive shootout and powered her side to glory.

Nigeria progresses to its first-ever semifinal at the competition, where it will meet either Colombia or Tanzania, while the USA made its first participation in the U-17 WWC knockout round since 2008.

Meanwhile, in another quarterfinal match, Germany outclassed Brazil 2-0 to make it to the semifinals.

In a one-sided affair, Germany’s Marie Steiner opened the scoring and handed an early lead to her side.

Germany’s early lead lasted till the conclusion of the regulation time but Melina Kruger struck the second five minutes into the stoppage time to power the side to a commanding 2-0 victory.

Tanzania secure quarters berth on debut FIFA U17 Women’s WC

MUMBAI: Veronica Mapunda’s strike powered Tanzania to hang on for a 1-1 draw against Canada on Tuesday to qualify for the quarter-finals in their maiden FIFA U7 Women’s World Cup campaign.

In the last Group D fixture between Tanzania and Canada, the debutant side held their nerves calm as they forced a tie, which resulted in them qualifying for their first quarter-finals in the U17 Women’s World Cup.

With the quarter-finals berth on stake, Canada took the field with an attacking approach and tested Tanzania’s defences multiple times.

The domination soon turned into a goal as Amanda Marrie Allen fired the ball into the nets on penalty in the 14th minute, following an offensive tackle by Tanzania’s defence.

Canada’s early lead in the must-win game shortlived as Mapunda neutralized Canada’s lead to 1-1 after her left-foot strike crashed into the nets.

The rest of the match witnessed Canada searching for the tie-breaker but Tanzania’s defence denied their march and kept the scoreboard intact at 1-1 till the final whistle.

Following their draw against Canada, Tanzania sealed a quarter-final spot as they finished Group D with four points, behind Japan with nine.

On the other hand, Japan kept their unbeaten run intact as they downed France 2-0 to finish Group D standings on top in the other fixture on Tuesday.

Momoko Tanikawa opened the scoring for Japan in the 29th minute to push France on the back foot.

France kept searching for the equalizer in the remainder but it was Japan’s Sayami Kusunoki, who struck in the stoppage time to enhance Japan’s lead to 2-0.

Following the conclusion of the group stages, all four quarter-final matches of the mega event have been set and will take place on October 21 and 22.

The table-toppers of Group A – the United States of America (USA) – will take on Nigeria on Friday, while Germany will take on Brazil on the same day.

Tanzania will lock horns with Colombia in the third quarter-final on Saturday, whereas, the table-toppers of Group D – Japan – and defending champions – Spain – will collide in the fourth quarter-final.

Sillas’ late strike in vain as China beat Mexico in FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

MUMBAI: Mexico’s midfielder Katherina Guijarro Silas’ strike in the stoppage time went in vain as China sealed a comprehensive 2-1 victory to start their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign triumphant.

The highly-competitive Group C encounter between the two sides witnessed a goalless first half as both teams’ strikers tested opposition’s defences. Both goalkeepers, however, displayed remarkable grit as the scoreboard remained intact at 0-0.

Mexico’s Maribel Hernandez was rewarded with a penalty following a handball foul by Chinese defender, but failed to seize the opportunity as she hit the crossbar.

China’s Ruiqi Qiao then opened the scoring for her side as she successfully availed the awarded penaly in the 49th minute.

Yu Xingyue’s substitution in the 89th minute proved crucial for China as the midfielder, one minute in the field enhanced her side’s lead to 2-0.

Mexico’s midfielder Guijarro saved her side from a goalless defeat as she netted the ball in the stoppage time to reduce China’s lead to one.

Mexico then continued their expedition for the equalizer but the Chinese defence held their nerves calm to deny a draw as their goalkeeper blocked a couple of attempts and bolstered her side to an opening victory.

Meanwhile, the Group D fixture between Canada and France resulted in a 1-1 draw and the two teams shared a points each.

French striker Lucie Calba struck an equalizer in the 73rd minute – six minutes later Canada’s Annabelle Chukwu’s strike – as France held on for draw in their opening match.

USA hammer India 8-0 on FIFA U-17 Women’s WC debut

BHUBANESHWAR: Hosts India were off to a dismal start to their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign as they went down 8-0 against the United States of America (USA) on Tuesday.

As hosts, India earned an automatic qualification in Group A and are one of three debutants in the event, along with Morocco and Tanzania (Group D).

Riley Jackson, the Golden Ball winner of the U-17 CONCACAF Championship led the attack for USA as she set up the opening two goals when Melina Rebimbas and Charlotte Kohler respectively converted her crosses.

The home side began to panic following an early attack launched by the strong American forwards and gaps began to emerge in their defence.

In the 26th minute, Onyeka Gamero snatched goalkeeper Anjali Munda’s pass to centre-back Purnima Kumari, who subsequently beat Anjali to make it 3-0.

Riley then passed the ball to Melina, who blasted it into the net with her second touch.

Minutes before half-time, Olivia Thompson entered the Indian box and took a well-calculated shot at near post and enhancing USA’s lead to 5-0.

USA captain Natalia Astrain then decided to test the bench strength of her side as she replaced Riley Jackson with Mia Bhuta in midfield.

Six minutes into the second half, Mia assisted Emri Ella to make it 6-0, while Taylor Suarez scored from the penalty spot to establish the record for the USA’s biggest win in tournament history.

Mia’s 62nd-minute strike then turned out to be a cherry on top for the USA when she buried the ball into the net with a left-footed curler from outside the box.

Meanwhile, India failed to net a single goal in the one-sided clash.

In the Group B match between Germany and Nigeria, the former came back from a goal down in the first half to win 2-1.

Four minutes into the second half, Svea Stoldt guided a corner strike as it sneaked through the Nigerian defence and neutralized the latter’s lead.

12 minutes later, Mara Alber then put her side into the lead that lasted till the final whistle and completed her side’s astounding comeback after a frustrating start.

Brazil, Chile triumph on opening day of FIFA U17 Women’s WC

INDIA: Chile outclassed New Zealand 3-1 in the first Group B fixture of the recently-commenced FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday, while Brazil downed Morocco 1-0 in the Group A fixture.

The opening match of Group B witnessed utter domination from Chile as Ambar Figueroa capitalized on a brilliant assist from Constanza Oliver in the 12th minute to get her side on the scoreboard.

A gruelling collision between the Kiwi goalkeeper and Oliver in the 22nd minute earned Chile a penalty and Tali Sima Rovner Yudelevich made the most of it as she successfully struck for her side and enhanced their lead to 2-0.

New Zealand also found a couple of chances to get the scoreboard moving in their favour but the side failed to utilize them and the scores remained intact at 2-0 in the first half.

However, the team had a change of fortune in the second half as Emily Clegg scored the goal just seven minutes into the second half, thanks to a corner assist from Helena Errington.

Chile then bounced back in the 64th minute and restored their lead after Anais San Juan netted after a long strike.

Meanwhile, in the Group A fixture, Brazil outclassed Morocco 1-0, courtesy of a brilliant strike from Ingrid Johnson in the fifth minute.

Chile and Brazil have attained the top spots in their respective groups following their victories.
