Shaheen Afridi soars to Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings summit

DUBAI: Pakistan’s left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi made a big leap to top the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings.

Shaheen Afridi, the spearhead of Pakistan’s pace attack, jumped nine places to claim the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings, owing to his impressive showing in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

He has taken the joint most wickets in the tournament alongside Australia leg spinner Adam Zampa, with both bowlers taking 16 wickets each.

He added three wickets to his tally yesterday during Pakistan’s thumping seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Kolkata, helping his side remain in contention for the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shaheen Afridi also became the fastest pacer to take 100 wickets in ODI cricket during the match against Bangladesh. He achieved the milestone in 51 innings, piping previous record-holder Mitchell Starc, who conceded 52 innings.

Shaheen Afridi overtook the likes of Australia’s Josh Hazlewood (second), India’s Mohammed Siraj (third) and South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj (fourth) in the ICC ODI Bowling Rankings, who lost one place courtesy of his big leap.

He has occupied the number one ranking in any format for the first time, meanwhile, his teammate and Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam has clung to his number one spot in the ICC ODI Batting Rankings by the barest of margins.

Siraj gave away 68 runs for one wicket from his nine overs in Rajkot during Australia’s 66-run victory, while, Josh Hazlewood returned with figures of 2-42 in his eight overs to retain his rating points.

They are closely followed by Afghanistan’s spin bowling duo Mujeeb Ur Rahman (657) and Rashid Khan (655) at third and fourth position respectively.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi jumped two places to sixth with 632 points, as Australia’s Mitchell Starc dropped to eighth position with 628 points after picking one wicket for 57 runs from 7 overs in his ODI comeback in the final ODI in the series against India.

Babar Azam retains top ODI ranking despite Shubman Gill’s threat

DUBAI: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam retained his position at the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, while Indian batter Shubman Gill further closed the gap.

Babar Azam will enter the ICC World Cup 2023 as the number-one ODI batter after Shubman Gill rested for India’s final clash of their ODI series against Australia.

However, both the batters will battle for the top spot throughout the World Cup as Gill (847) is just 10 rating points behind Azam (857), while third-ranked Rassie van der Dussen is way behind with 743 points.

Shubman Gill continued his brilliant form in the first two matches of the ODI series against Australia, amassing a total of 178 runs for the series during the opening two contests. Prior to that, he topped the runs chart in the Asia Cup 2023 with 302 runs in six matches at 75.50.

Meanwhile, Indian fast bowler Mohammad Siraj maintains a narrow lead at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings with 680 rating points over Australian Josh Hazlewood (669), followed by Afghanistan’s spin bowling duo Mujeeb Ur Rahman (657) and Rashid Khan (655).

DUBAI: India’s batting prodigy Shubman Gill climbed two spots and moved within touching distance to Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman in the latest ICC ODI Batting Rankings.

Shubman Gill, who enjoyed an excellent campaign in the three-match ODI series against West Indies, got the reward of his brilliance as the right-handed batter achieved career-high rating points (743) and moved closer to Fakhar and Imam in ICC ODI Batting Rankings.

Fakhar (755) and Imam (745) are ranked third and fourth in the ICC ODI Batting Rankings respectively.

Gill’s fellow Ishan Kishan also jumped nine places to reach 36th rank in the ICC ODI Batting Rankings with 589 points after scoring 184 runs in the series against West Indies.

The recent ICC ODI bowling rankings saw Kuldeep Yadav jumping four places to reach the 10th spot after taking seven wickets in the series against the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, who took eight wickets in the series and was the leading wicket-taker in the series, moved up three places to 30th.

Babar Azam rises in ICC Test Batting Ranking

Pakistan captain Babar Azam jumped a spot to claim the fourth position in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Test Batting Rankings.

Babar, who could score just 76 runs in the recently-concluded two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, got a fortunate push in the rankings.

His fortunate promotion was a result of the demotion of Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head.

Labuschagne and Head were far from their best in the recently-concluded Ashes and their inability to score big in the five-match series, saw them losing crucial rating points.

Consequently, Labuschagne slipped three spots to fifth while Head was demoted two spots to the sixth position.

Last week, Babar Azam slipped to the fifth position after a below-par performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan’s hero with the bat in the second Test against Sri Lanka Abdullah Shafique got the reward for his heroics as he rose 27 spots to 21st.

Whereas, Pakistan’s first Test hero Saud Shakeel remained at 15th position with a career-best 705 rating points.

Pakistan bowlers were also rewarded as Shaheen Shah Afridi, who made six scalps in two Tests against Sri Lanka, jumped three positions to sixth while his pace partner Naseem Shah climbed up seven spots to equal 37th.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s star with the ball in the second Sri Lanka Test Nauman Ali enjoyed a massive surge as he improved 13 places to 42nd — the most notable among improvers.

England produced a strong fightback during the second half of the series to tie the Ashes at 2-2 and a host of their best performers were rewarded on the updated ICC rankings lists.

Former skipper Joe Root rises one spot to second on the Test batter rankings with New Zealand veteran Kane Williamson the only player in front of him, while young teammate Harry Brook jumps two places to ninth and a new career-high rating following his 363 runs for the series.

Compatriots Jonny Bairstow (up two places to 17th) and Zak Crawley (up six rungs to equal 29th) also make some ground on the list for batters, while experienced duo Steve Smith (up three places to third) and Usman Khawaja (up one place to seventh) are the Australian players to climb the standings.

Pakistan pip India at No.2 in ODI team rankings annual update

DUBAI: Pakistan cricket team overtook arch-rivals India to take the second spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings after the annual update on Thursday.

The Men in Green, who briefly stayed the No.1 ODI team for the first time last week during the recently-held ODI series against New Zealand, still maintain a narrow one-point lead over third-placed India.

Australia, however, retained their top spot on the charts with a rating of 118 points, just two points ahead of Pakistan’s 116.

Prior to the annual rankings update, Australia were at No.1 with 113 points with India behind them on the decimal count. Pakistan were ranked third, with 112 points.

Pakistan went to the top of the standings after their victory in the fourth ODI against New Zealand on Friday but could not hold onto the spot beyond two days following their defeat in the final ODI.

The annual rankings take into account all the series played since May 2020, but the series completed after May 2022 are weighted at 100 per cent while the series before that carries 50 per cent weightage.

Apart from Pakistan, Australia and India, the rest of the teams have many yards to cover to catch up with the top three.

New Zealand sit fourth on the table displacing England from the spot with 104 points.

South Africa and Bangladesh maintain their spots on sixth and seventh, respectively, after the annual update.

Meanwhile, there is a big movement beneath them as Afghanistan take a massive jump to the eighth overall, overtaking Sri Lanka (ninth) and West Indies (tenth).

Iftikhar achieves career-best ranking after PAK vs NZ T20I series

DUBAI: Middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed has achieved the career-best position in the latest ICC T20I rankings after his blistering knocks in the recently-concluded PAK vs NZ T20I series.

Iftikhar moved six places to equal 38th and is the third-highest-ranked Pakistan batter after Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan on the current list of T20I batters.

The right-hander scored 36 from 22 in the final T20I on Monday while he baton-charged  Kiwi bowlers in the third match when he smashed a quickfire 24-ball 60. The visitors survived Iftikhar’s brilliance to win that match before beating Pakistan in the final match to level the five-game series 2-2.

Wicket-keeper batter Rizwan, however, retains his second position on the rankings as he closes in on India’s Suryakumar Yadav, who remains the No.1-ranked T20I batter with 906 rating points.

Rizwan thrashed an unbeaten 98 in the last match and ended the series as the leading run-scorer for Pakistan. He rose from 798 to 811 points, bringing down the difference between him and Yadav to less than 100.

Skipper Babar, on the other hand, holds onto third place on the latest T20I rankings, although the right-hander dropped 13 rating points to 756 points after he managed just 19 runs in the fifth match against Kiwis.

The big mover for Pakistan in the latest rankings was all-rounder Imad Wasim, who produced impressive performances with both bat and ball during the series.

“Imad scored 31 in the fifth and final game of the series, but it was his eight wickets at an average of 10.37 during the series that really stood out and the 34-year-old was rewarded on both the bowler and all-rounder rankings.” said the International Cricket Council’s media release on Wednesday.

Imad made his way into the top 100 on the latest rankings for T20I bowlers rankings and also climbed 44 places to joint-24th on the all-rounders’ list.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan holds the highest rank on the T20I bowler charts, while Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan remains the No.1 ranked all-rounder.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, who was the leading run-getter in the PAK vs NZ T20I series, was awarded for his sensational form as he moved up 45 places to a career-best 35th overall.

Chapman hit a match-winning hundred in that fifth game of the series to help New Zealand draw the series.

Haris Rauf overtakes Shadab to close in on top ten T20I bowlers

DUBAI: Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf went past teammate Shadab Khan on the ICC T20I bowlers’ rankings and moved within a striking distance of entering into the top ten list after his impressive performance in the ongoing PAK vs NZ T20I series.

Haris, who picked up ten wickets in his last three games, climbed five places to 11th overall on the T20I bowlers’ chart after the latest update of the ICC Players’ rankings on Wednesday.

The right-arm quick bagged four-wicket hauls twice in two days, playing impactful roles in Pakistan’s wins in the first two matches of the five-game series against New Zealand. The Blackcaps, however, bounced back to win the third T20I in which Haris took two wickets.

“The Pakistan quick was just ahead of Shaheen Afridi last week and behind Shadab Khan, who was 12th in the T20I bowling rankings. Ten wickets spread across the first three T20Is has seen Rauf move up five places in the rankings to occupy the 11th spot.” said ICC statement.

“He also achieved career-high ratings of 657 points in the process and could potentially enter the top 10 by the end of the five-match series.”

Meanwhile, left-arm pacer Shaheen(624) has also jumped two spots to occupy 15th place on the rankings.

It may be noted here that Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and his compatriot Fazalhaq Farooqi hold first and second positions respectively, on the T20I bowlers’ list.

Babar jumps to No.3, Rizwan retains second spot in latest T20I rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam has improved his standing on the T20I batters’ list after the latest ICC rankings update on Wednesday.

Babar jumped a spot to third on the charts after New Zealand Devon Conway’s absence from New Zealand’s series against Sri Lanka led to a slump in his rankings.

Kiwi batter dropped two places to fifth on the latest set of rankings with South Africa’s Aiden Markram taking fourth place.

No.1-ranked Suryakumar Yadav and second-placed Mohammad Rizwan, however, retained their positions on the table.

Babar and his opening partner in the shortest format, Rizwan, have an opportunity to close in on the Indian star as the duo will be in action when Pakistan commence their five-matches home T20I series against New Zealand on Saturday.

“While Suryakumar currently holds a commanding lead at the top of the T20I rankings for batters with 906 rating points, second-placed Rizwan (811) and third-placed Babar (755) could make gains while the India star is plying his trade in the IPL,” said ICC in a media release.

Meanwhile, on the bowler rankings, Maheesh Theekshana moved up to fifth on the list while his teammate Wanindu Hasaranga dropped two places to fourth. thanks to their contrasting performances in the recent T20I series against hosts New Zealand.

As a result of Hasaranga’s ranking dip, Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi (second) and Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood (third) both climbed a spot.

it is worth mentioning here that Afghanistan now hold the top two spots on the T20I bowlers’ charts as spinner Rashid Khan leads Fazal Haq Farooqi in a close contest for top billing.

“It means Steve Smith (third), Joe Root (fourth), Babar Azam (fifth) and Travis Head (sixth) all drop one place,” it added.
