‘Professor’ Mohammad Hafeez gets enrolled at University of Karachi

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez got enrolled in the BS Health Physical Education and Sports Sciences (HPESS) program at the University of Karachi (UOK).

According to the details, Hafeez on Friday, met the Vice Chancellor of the UOK, Prof. Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Secret alongside the President of the HPESS, Prof. Dr Basit Ansari.

The former captain stated that he could not complete his higher studies during his professional career for Pakistan cricket.

In a statement released by the UOK, the university quoted Hafeez, who expressed his delight to resume his curricular career and also to be a part of the country’s largest public sector university.

“Mohammad Hafeez expressed that he was delighted to be a part of the country’s largest public sector university and hoped that HPESS would help him in achieving his dreams of pursuing higher education,” a press release issued by KU stated.

“Meanwhile, the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi while welcoming Muhammad Hafeez to the University of Karachi said that students would learn a lot from the former captain’s cricketing experience.

“He mentioned that our young generation should also participate in sports as it is essential for mental and physical development. He said that people should learn from the spirit of competition rather than getting jealous of someone’s success.”

Notably, following Pakistan’s remarkable triumph over India and New Zealand in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, the UOK announced fully paid scholarships for the team members and also to provide the best facilities and bear all the academic expenses of the sportsmen and sportswomen, who made the nation proud.

It is worth mentioning here that Hafeez represented Pakistan in 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is over the course of his career.

‘Rizwan should be rested,’ Hafeez advises Babar to pick Sarfaraz for Karachi Test

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez advised to give wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan ‘a break’ and include Sarfaraz Ahmed in the Playing XI for the upcoming Karachi Test.

Hafeez, in an interview with a local channel, commented on the debate of replacing Rizwan with Sarfaraz and threw his weight behind former Test captain Sarfaraz, emphasizing the fact that the former needs a break.

“Sarfaraz has been with the team for the last three years but only as a traveller and could not play a match and at several points, he can be given a chance to play,” said Hafeez.

“And I still think that the Pakistan Cricket Board’s think tank and even Babar should think that if Rizwan could not deliver well in this format then they should give him a break and Sarfaraz or even any other option they have, should be utilized in a best possible way,” he added.

Notably, besides Hafeez, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik also advised including Sarfaraz and Shan Masood in the upcoming Karachi Test; claiming Sarfaraz will bring much experience & Shan will help this team to have more stability.

“In my opinion, Pakistan should include Sarfaraz Ahmed & Shan Masood in playing 11. Sarfaraz will bring much experience & Shan will help this team to have more stability. I hope our team will perform well in Karachi insha’Allah.” he tweeted.

Malik’s suggestion for changes in the team came at a time when Pakistan faced two consecutive defeats and lost the home series 2-0 against England.

England sealed a dramatic win earlier today as they beat Pakistan by 26 runs in Multan Test on Day 4.

It is pertinent to mention that Sarfaraz was captain of the side when he played his last Test in January 2019 and has since been unable to find a spot in the Playing XI.

‘Can give short-term success,’ Hafeez on Shadab’s promotion to No.4

KARACHI: Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez remained unpleased with the shuffling in the national team’s middle order during the second fixture of the ongoing T20 Tri-series in New Zealand and claimed that the move can give short-term success only.

In the recently-concluded second match of the ongoing Tri-nation T20 series in New Zealand, Pakistan comfortably outclassed the hosts by six wickets to secure the top berth in the standings.

Pakistan’s T20I vice-captain Shadab Khan, who was promoted to bat at No.4, played a crucial knock of 34 runs in the run chase and bolstered the green shirts to chase the 148-run target with 10 balls to spare.

Former Pakistan captain Hafeez, however, seemed unpleased by the tactics and claimed that it can only benefit the national team for short-term success.

“Promotion of [Shadab Khan] at no 4 & M[ohammad Nawaz] at no 5 can give short-term success but [will] put more pressure & doubts in the minds of middle order batters,” Hafeez tweeted.

“Why they [are] there for??? If no confidence in them then why they are with the team?? Middle order [will] remain an issue,” Hafeez questioned.

Cricket fans, on the other hand, had an otherwise opinion as they claimed that Shadab batting at No.4 can fix Pakistan’s struggling middle-order woes.

“Facing Middle Order problems ?? One Solution: SHADAB KHAN At No.4,” A cricket fan wrote.

Another cricket fan supported Shadab’s promotion in the batting order and also stated that Haider Ali and Asif Ali can be used as finishers.

“I think this batting order is suitable with Shadab coming at the top and we can use Haider’s power-hitting skills and Asif ali as finishers,” he tweeted.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan will come face to face with New Zealand again in their next T20 Tri-series fixture, a win over the hosts can take them to the final.

‘Rohit Sharma looked scared and confused’ claims Mohammad Hafeez

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez made a major assertion regarding India’s all-format skipper Rohit Sharma by stating that the latter looked scared and confused.

Rohit, on Wednesday, led India to a second consecutive win in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022, following which the defending champions booked their place in the Super Fours of the continental. The victory against Hong Kong was Rohit’s 31st as the captain – the second most by an Indian after MS Dhoni.

Former Pakistan captain Hafeez, however, did not look impress with the Indian captain and questioned his body language while walking out for the toss for the Hong Kong clash.

“Look at his expression. This was after the match was over, India won by 40 runs. I am talking about the body language when Rohit Sharma walked out for the toss. I thought it was a very weak body language. He looked scared and confused. From what I have observed during the match, captaincy is adding a lot of pressure on Rohit Sharma. He is facing a lot of problems,” said Hafeez.

“IPL did not go well for him and after IPL, he hasn’t been able to regain the flow in international cricket,” he added.

The former Pakistan all-rounder also claimed that captaincy is adding a lot of pressure on Rohit. Whereas, the supposed new approach from India is not reflected by their captain’s body language.

“Also, the pressure of leading India. He has been saying a lot of things about the brand of cricket, we will play positively… this and that, but it’s not reflected in the way the team is playing,” Hafeez claimed.

“It’s not reflected by his own body language. It’s easy to talk but to do it and show it on the field is difficult,” he maintained.

Hafeez then went on to make a major prediction regarding Rohit’s future as India’s captain and claimed that the latter will not be continuing to lead the side for long.

“He won’t continue as captain for long. His form and all things that are going on with him, from what I can see… I was also a captain, so if you are under pressure when leading the side. I have seen Rohit on a lot of occasions, he enjoys himself but now he is not expressing himself. A lot of things are going on in his mind, he is under pressure and I feel sorry for him,” Hafeez concluded.

Pakistan ‘unprepared’ for the upcoming T20 WC in Australia, claims Hafeez

LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Team is unprepared for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Australia later this year.

Hafeez, while speaking in ARY News’ show Bouncer (Eid Special), claimed that the green shirts are missing the composition for playing well in the Australian conditions.

“I’m hoping and praying that Pakistan’s team does well in the World Cup. However, I believe the team still lacks the necessary components for such results in Australian conditions,” he said.

“We’ve been unable to hit the process of winning in Australia. I think our middle order is still unsettled. Whereas in the bowling department, only [Shaheen Shah Afridi] and [Haris Rauf] are performing well but they too do not have much experience of playing in those conditions. So I think it would be quite challenging for the side,” he added.

The former captain further advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to finalize the squad for the upcoming World Cup.

“I think the board should build a better team combination and finalise the squad in the next five to six months. Those players – with which the management has already decided to go for the mega event – should be given ample opportunities and should not be dropped after brief stints,” Hafeez said.

“It would give a lot of confidence to them and the management should accept their failures and success in that period of time,” he added.

No Cricket during Eid

On being asked how Hafeez feels now that he is celebrating Eid at home after being on several tours over the last few years owing to his commitment to the team, he replied, that it is challenging for players the PCB should take measures to provide them with some off days during the special events like Eid.

“I believe that celebrating Eid away from home is difficult, but it is something that you cannot refuse, and sadly, our board does not make any efforts to protect players from this issue,” he said.

“Similarly, most nations do not play cricket during the Christmas season, and we too should consider allowing players to take some time off to celebrate this special occasion with their families,” he added.

Retirement from International Cricket

On a question regarding his retirement from international cricket and how did he get to a point of making the decision of hanging his boots, the former captain Hafeez claimed that he wanted to make a respectful exit and clear the way for the youngsters.

“I always played cricket to serve Pakistan and to earn respect. I self-analyzed myself and got to a decision that it is the very best time to make a respectful exit,” he said.

“I wanted to provide a chance to the young players who have been waiting in line for a slot, and when I say the moment was perfectly correct, it’s because I wanted to allow the upcoming players a year to settle into the team so that Pakistan could go on to win the World Cup,” he concluded.

Multiple choices for the captaincy role

When asked about Shaheen leading Lahore Qalandars to their first Pakistan Super League (PSL) victory, which has created a debate regarding several captaincy possibilities in the form of Babar, Rizwan, and Shaheen, Hafeez responded that having multiple alternatives is a good indication for Pakistan cricket.

“In my opinion, if we have multiple options for the leadership role then it is beneficial for Pakistan cricket,” Hafeez said.

“If we are getting a different style of leadership for Pakistan then I would say it is a really good sign for Pakistan cricket moving forward,” he concluded.
