Multan Sultans’ Khushdil Shah fined for code of conduct violation

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday, charged Multan Sultans’ all-rounder Khushdil Shah for a level 1 breach of the PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during his side’s match against Peshawar Zalmi on Friday.

According to the PCB, Khushdil has been fined 10 per cent of the match fee for the misconduct. The all-rounder was charged for disobeying an umpire’s instruction.

“Khushdil was charged for violating Article 2.4 that reads as, ‘Disobeying an umpire’s instruction during the match’,” stated PCB in a press release.

“The incident took place in the 15th over of Multan Sultans’ batting, when Khushdil, twice in the over asked umpires to check the ball,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the all-rounder has pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Muhammad Javed.

It is apropos to mention that Rilee Rosssouw’s record ton powered Sultans to pull off the highest run chase in PSL to beat Peshawar Zalmi and confirmed their spot in the playoffs.

Rossouw’s record ton sinks Zalmi as Sultans storm into playoff

RAWALPINDI: Rilee Rossouw struck the fastest century of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and fired Multan Sultans to pull off the highest run chase to down hapless Peshawar Zalmi and into the playoffs.

In a bid to seal the playoff, the Sultans had a mammoth total to chase ahead of them as the former champions needed to pull off the highest-ever run chase, which they eventually did so with five balls to spare at the back of a scintillating century knock by Rossouw.

In pursuit of 243, the Sultans were off to an unwanted start; losing both their openers Mohammad Rizwan (7) and Shan Masood (5) inside three overs with just 28 runs on the scoreboard.

Following the slump, T20 specialist Kieron Pollard and Rossouw counter-attacked the Zalmi bowlers and stitched a match-defining 99-run partnership for the third wicket with both scoring quick half-centuries.

Pollard reached his fifty in just 22 deliveries after hitting three consecutive sixes to Mujeeb ur Rehman while Rossouw was even quicker as he conceded just 17 balls in the process and registered his name in the list of joint-fastest half-centuries in the league’s history.

The Zalmi then finally found a breakthrough in the 10th over when Wahab Riaz put an end to Pollard’s astonishing knock with a shorter delivery. He scored 52 in 25 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and five sixes.

The Sultans then endured another setback in quick succession as their in-form batter Tim David perished after managing to score just two and his side, consequently slipped to 148/4 in the 12th over.

Rossouw, on the other hand, continued his baton charge on the Zalmi bowlers and kept Sultans in the hunt with belligerent hitting, receiving significant support from Khushdil Shah, who scored 18 off 14.

Anwar Ali joined Rossouw after Khushdil’s dismissal and made sure the Sultans did not lose momentum in the run chase as the pair added vital 21 runs in 13 balls before Rossouw finally perished in the 19th over.

The left-handed batter top-scored for the Sultans with an astounding 51-ball 121, laced with 12 boundaries and eight sixes.

Meanwhile, Anwar, who had a forgetful outing with the ball in the first innings, held his ground firm and put on a match-winning partnership with Usama Mir, who played a crucial cameo of 11 runs in just three balls with the help of one boundary and a six.

The pair held their composure in the tense last two overs and steered their side to victory with five balls to spare.

Anwar stayed unbeaten on 24 off just eight deliveries, hitting two boundaries and a six.

Azmatullah Omarzai bagged two wickets for Zalmi but went for plenty, while Saim Ayub, Wahab, Arshad Iqbal and Mujeeb struck out a batter each.

Opting to bat first, the Zalmi batters made the most of the batting paradise of the Pindi Cricket Stadium as the former champions piled up a massive total of 242/6 in 20 overs.

Earlier, Zalmi openers Babar Azam and Saim carried on their magnificent form as the pair once again scripted a solid start for the side with both scoring brisk half-centuries.

Babar got to the milestone first in just 24 deliveries, recording his fastest fifty in the league’s history before Saim followed.

The pair once again looked comfortable trumping the record partnership of the league before Usama Mir got rid of Saim in the 12th over and handed a much-needed breakthrough to the Sultans.

The left-handed batter scored a brisk 33-ball 58, laced up five boundaries and four sixes.

Babar’s stay at the crease also remained brief after Saim’s dismissal as a short-pitch delivery by Abbas Afridi saw the end of his brilliant knock.

The Zalmi’s skipper scored 73 in just 39 balls, smashing nine boundaries and two sixes.

Zalmi then lost wickets at regular intervals but vital blitz by Mohammad Haris in the middle and Tom Kohler-Cadmore at the death powered the former champions to a massive total.

Haris struck a quickfire 35 in a mere 11 deliveries, hitting a boundary and four sixes, including three consecutive sixes to Sheldon Cottrell in the 14th over.

Kohler-Cadmore, on the other hand, was equally ruthless with his 18-ball 38 which featured four boundaries and two sixes.

Abbas led the bowling attack for the Sultans with 4/39 while Usama could pick up a wicket amid their forgetful day with the ball.

Fakhar, bowlers script Qalandars’ dominating triumph over United

RAWALPINDI: Fakhar Zaman scored a magnificent century before bowlers powered Lahore Qalandars to a resounding 119-run victory over Islamabad United to retain their top spot in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) eight standings.

Set to chase a massive 227, the strong United batting lineup crumbled against a disciplined Qalandars’ bowling attack and consequently bundled out for a meagre 107 in absence of their in-form batter Azam Khan.

The United openers, earlier in the run chase, provided a flying start to their side as they raced up to 31/0 in the first three overs.

The Qalandars, who were put under pressure right from the start of the pursuit then finally found a moment of cherish as Zaman Khan got rid of danger-looking Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who could score a run-a-ball 15.

Gurbaz’s dismissal triggered a match-defining collapse as the United lost wickets at regular intervals before eventually being restricted to 107/9 in the 16th over.

Since their wicketkeeper batter Azam, did not come to bat due to an injury, which he suffered in the first innings, the United were deemed all out and thus Qalandars registered a dominating 119-run victory over the hosts.

Tailender Hasan Ali and opener Alex Hales remained the joint top-scorer for the United in their dismal show with the bat as both could score 18.

Rashid Khan led the Qalandars’ bowling attack with 4/21 while Haris Rauf and Zaman bagged two each. David Wiese, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Opting to bat first, the Qalandars made the most of the batting paradise on offer as the visitors dominated the host bowlers to pile up a massive total at the back of a scintillating century by Fakhar.

Earlier, the defending champions were off to a poor start as they lost their in-form batter Abdullah Shafique for just one in the first over.

Fakhar then looked to settle things down after the early setback and batted cautiously in the next over. However, after Asif Ali dropped his catch in Hasan Ali’s first over, there was no stopping the hard-hitting opener.

Fakhar then did not look back and stitched a match-defining partnership with Kamran Ghulam, putting his side in complete command to score big.

The pair contributed 122 runs in just 61 deliveries before Mohammad Wasim Jr struck and brought an end to Ghulam’s cautious knock. He scored 41 in 30 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Fakhar then put on another crucial partnership as he accumulated 70 runs for the third wicket with Sam Billings and brought up his second PSL century.

United then had a sigh of relief in the 18th over as right-arm pacer Hasan Ali got the prized wicket of Fakhar; courtesy of a magnificent effort in the deep by Wasim Jr.

Fakhar top-scored for the Qalandars with 115 in 57 balls, smashing eight boundaries and as many sixes.

The Qalandars then jolted with two back-to-back dismissals at the backend as Billings and David Wiese (6) perished in quick successions.

Billings remained the notable run-getter for the Qalandars with his 22-ball 32 which featured two boundaries and two sixes.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan’s vital cameo in the death overs made sure Qalandars post a massive total on the scoreboard. He scored brisk 15 runs in five deliveries, laced with two boundaries and a six.

Fazalhaq Farooqi led the bowling attack for the United with 3/40 while Hasan and Wasim Jr could pick up a wicket.

Records galore as Roy-led Gladiators down Zalmi in high-scoring contest

RAWALPINDI: Numerous records bite the dust as Quetta Gladiators downed Peshawar Zalmi in the must-win Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight clash on Wednesday.

After struggling with the bat in the initial fixtures, Gladiators’ hard-hitting opener Jason Roy announced his comeback in style as the right-handed batter powered his side to pull off a miraculous victory over Zalmi with a marathon 145-run knock in the run chase.

With his scintillating match-winning knock, Roy registered the highest-ever individual score in PSL history, trumping Karachi Kings’ Colin Ingram’s 127 not out against Gladiators in 2019.

Roy also became the first overseas player in PSL to score two centuries in the league’s history. His century was also the second-fastest in the league’s history.

English opener’s astonishing knock powered Gladiators to pull off the highest-ever run chase in PSL history, breaking the previous record of Multan Sultans, who successfully chased down 209 against Lahore Qalandars in the previous edition.

The historic pursuit was also the second-highest successful chase in domestic T20s and the fourth-highest in all T20s.

The Gladiators also bettered the third-highest total of PSL history by scoring 243/2 which Zalmi put up in the first innings as they finished at 240/2.

Meanwhile, despite being a forgetful night for him as a captain, Babar Azam unlocked a long-awaited achievement for himself as the star batter struck his maiden century in the extravaganza.

With his magnificent knock, Babar scored his eighth century in T20s and is only behind T20 great Chris Gayle, who scored 22 tons in his iconic career.

Roy ton pulls off miraculous win over Zalmi as Gladiators stay alive

RAWALPINDI: Hard-hitting opener Jason Roy’s marathon 145-run knock trumped Babar Azam’s maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL) century as Quetta Gladiators pulled off the highest run chase to down Peshawar Zalmi by eight wickets and stayed alive in the playoff contention.

The Gladiators had a mountain to climb to stay alive in the tournament as the former champions needed to pull off the highest-ever run chase and eventually they did so with 10 balls to spare at the back of a scintillating knock by Roy.

In pursuit of 241, the Gladiators’ openers Martin Guptill and Roy gave their side a flying start as they straight away charged on Zalmi bowlers; raising 40 runs in the third over.

Roy was the core aggressor of the Gladiators’ counterattack but his partner Guptill also began to catch up before Wahab Riaz outdid him with a short-pitch delivery. He scored a brisk eight-ball 21 including three boundaries and a six.

Following the early setback, Will Smeed joined his countrymate in the middle and the pair stitched a match-defining 109-run partnership for the second wicket and made sure to score at a rapid pace.

Roy once again led the charge of yet another partnership while Smeed anchored the run chase before falling victim to Mujeeb Ur Rehman in the 12th over. He scored 26 off 22, hitting a boundary and two sixes.

The Gladiators needed 91 off the last eight overs when Mohammad Hafeez came out to bat.

The experienced batter wasted no time in settling down and opened his account with a boundary on the first ball. The right-handed batter then brought all his experience in play to support Roy, who was turning it into a nightmare for Zalmi.

The pair then prevailed in steering their side to victory and pulled off the highest run chase with 10 balls to spare as Zalmi bowlers remained clueless.

Roy played a marathon knock and registered the highest individual score in PSL history with a 63-ball 145, beefed up whopping 20 boundaries and five gigantic sixes.

Hafeez, on the other hand, also played a crucial cameo; scoring brisk 41 runs in 18 balls with the help of six boundaries and two sixes.

For Zalmi, Wahab and Mujeeb could pick up a wicket as the rest went for plenty and wicketless.

Opting to bat first against Gladiators, who took the field without their regular captain Sarfaraz Ahmed in a must-win clash, Zalmi openers Saim Ayub and Babar gave their bowlers a ruthless thrashing as the pair recorded the second-highest PSL partnership for any wicket.

Saim remained the core aggressor of his record partnership with Babar – who was by no mean sparing any delivery in his zone – and smashed the Gladiators’ bowlers all over the park with clean hitting.

The pair looked in great control to tumble the long-standing record of the then Karachi Kings’ opening pair of Babar and Sharjeel Khan’s 176 against Islamabad United but Dwaine Pretorius provided a much-needed breakthrough for the Gladiators by dismissing Saim with a slower ball.

Saim fell 15 runs short of what could have been his maiden PSL century as he played a quickfire 85-run knock in just 34 deliveries, smashing six boundaries and five sixes.

Zalmi promoted Rovman Powell up the order to continue the flow of runs and the hard-hitting batter justified his move as he supported Babar brilliantly with his cameo.

Meanwhile, Babar continued his utter domination with his strokeplay and brought up his long-awaited maiden PSL century when he clobbered Naseem Shah’s length delivery through wide cover to reach the milestone.

The Zalmi skipper continued his centurion knock till the final over thanks to some sloppy efforts by the Gladiators’ fielders in the deep before Aimal Khan finally ran him out.

Babar top-scored for the Zalmi with an astounding knock of 115 runs in just 65 balls, laced up with 15 boundaries and three sixes.

Powell then made sure of a strong end to a dominating effort as he, with some help from Tom Kohler-Cadmore (seven off three), powered Zalmi to their highest total in PSL history.

The right-handed batter played a vital cameo of 35 runs off 18 deliveries, which featured three boundaries and two sixes.

For the hapless Gladiators’ bowling attack, only Pretorius could pick up a wicket.
