Dale Steyn predicts T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finalists

Legendary South Africa pacer Dale Steyn named four teams, he foresees in the semi-finals of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Sharing his predictions via a video on Instagram, Steyn made a bold move by excluding defending champions England.

Notably, England, who were at one stage, on the verge of an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, pushed hard for the Super Eight qualification by registering thumping victories over Oman and Namibia.

Despite the 2022 champions’ current form, Dale Steyn does not foresee them making it into the knockouts.

“I think from this group (Group 2) I am going to go with South Africa and West Indies. I gotta go with South Africa because they are my team. England is a tough team, but I think South Africa and West Indies,” said Steyn.

Dale Steyn then termed former champions India and Australia favourites from Group 2 to advance to the semi-finals but predicted that Afghanistan could push hard.

“And then from the other group (Group 1), it is a tough group but Australia because they just know how to win these tournaments and I have a feeling Afghanistan could push, but it is gonna be India,” Steyn added.

It is worth mentioning here that two teams from each group of Super Eights will qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals, scheduled on June 27. Whereas, the final of the tournament will take place on June 29.

India thump Afghanistan to kick off T20 World Cup Super Eight with a win

BRIDGETOWN: Suryakumar Yadav’s blistering half-century, followed by a combined bowling display led India to a comfortable 47-run victory over Afghanistan in the 43rd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Thursday.

Chasing a daunting 182-run total, Afghanistan’s batting unit unfolded on just 134 on the final delivery of the innings.

Afghanistan got off to a dismal start to the pursuit as they lost three wickets upfront with just 23 runs on the board in 4.1 overs.

Following the early slump, Gulbadin Naib partnered with Azmatullah Omarzai in a bid to launch recovery.

The duo added 44 runs for the fourth wicket but both perished in successive overs as Afghanistan slipped to 71/5 in 11.1 overs.

Gulbadin Naib scored 17 off 21 balls, hitting two boundaries including a six while Omarzai remained the top-scorer for Afghanistan with 20-ball 26 which included two fours and a six.

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi stitched a resilient sixth-wicket partnership with Najibullah Zadran.

Their sixth-wicket stand yielded 31 runs and lasted with Zadran’s dismissal in the 16th over after scoring 19 off 17.

Nabi followed him back to the dugout in the next over after scoring a run-a-ball 14.

Afghanistan’s batting tail then crumbled against India’s dominant bowling attack despite Noor Ahmad’s valiant 12.

Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh led the bowling charge for India with three wickets each, followed by Kuldeep Yadav, who bagged two while Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket.

Sent into bat first, India registered 181/8 on the scoreboard, courtesy of Yadav’s brisk half-century, followed by Hardik Pandya’s blitz.

India, however, had a shaky start to their innings as captain Rohit Sharma (8) fell victim to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the third over with just 11 runs on the board.

Virat Kohli then joined forces with Rishabh Pant and together they raised 43 runs until the latter perished on the last delivery of the seventh over.

Pant was the core aggressor of the stand, scoring a brisk 20 off 11 deliveries, while Kohli anchored through before perishing in the ninth over. He scored a run-a-ball 24.

Top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav then took the reigns of India’s batting charge.

He put together a brief partnership with Shivam Dube, who could score 10 off seven deliveries, before finding subtle support at the other end in the form of Hardik Pandya.

Yadav and Pandya turned the tide in India’s favour with a quickfire 60-run partnership.

India’s crucial fifth-wicket stand lasted in the 17th over when Farooqi outclassed Yadav with a leg-cutter to provide a much-needed breakthrough to Afghanistan.

Suryakumar Yadav remained the top-scorer for India with a 28-ball 53 which featured five fours and three sixes.

India then sustained another massive blow to their batting expedition when set batter Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja perished in the same over, bringing the total down to 165/7 in 18.4 overs.

Pandya remained a notable run-getter for India with 32 off 24 deliveries, laced up with three fours and two sixes.

Later, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh made notable contribution to India’s total with a 16-run stand which lasted with the former’s run out on the final delivery.

Patel scored 12 off six deliveries while Singh made two not out.

Fazalhaq Farooqi, the leading wicket-taker of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, and Rashid Khan bagged three wickets each for Afghanistan while Naveen-ul-Haq took one.

Mohammad Hafeez reveals players’ shocking behaviour during his tenure

Former Pakistan men’s cricket team Director Mohammad Hafeez revealed a shocking tale of the players’ behaviour and approach during his tenure.

Hafeez, who served in the role from November 2023 to February 2024 and also as the interim head coach, lambasted the national players after Pakistan’s group-stage exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and highlighted that they lack discipline.

In a conversation with renowned cricketing figures, England’s Michael Vaughan and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist, Hafeez claimed that the players used to be sleeping in dressing room during Test matches.

“You tell me, Gilly [Gilchrist] if a player is sleeping in the dressing room while we’re playing Test cricket. 4-5 players are sleeping in the dressing room. Should I allow that as a team director?” Hafeez questioned.

Vaughan wittily asked, “Are they tired?” to which Hafeez continued with a serious tone, “I really don’t know. I went into the dressing room and found 4-5 players sleeping while playing Test cricket. I was like, ‘How come you guys can do that?’ If you do something like this, you cannot be a part of this team.”

Mohammad Hafeez then reiterated the importance of focus while playing professional cricket, asserting that he never interfered in players’ personal lives and only wanted them to stay focused during their professional timings.

“I want you guys to stay focused during the game and off the game, whatever you guys do, it is your own life; I never get involved in it. But in the professional timings of the game, I want you guys to focus on the game,” he continued.

“Stay in touch. If you are a fast bowler, you can have a rest and a good ice bath, but you need to concentrate on the game of cricket, like how the other team is also doing. You cannot switch yourself off during the game, but unfortunately, the media didn’t like it,” he concluded.

Speaking at the toss, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma stated that the track looks good to bat now but anticipated it to get slower with time.

“The track looks alright, don’t know how it’ll play. Feel it’ll get slower. Better than New York (laughs), we won there which was more important. Need to adapt now. We’ve been here 3-4 days and have practised,” Rohit said.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan shared that he would have batted first but insisted that the toss does not matter much in T20s and vowed to focus on their execution.

“We’d have batted first as well but in T20s toss doesn’t matter as much as execution. Happy with how things have gone so far, especially with the batters,” Rashid said.

“Need to do the right things at the right time and control emotions as we go. We’ve been here couple of days longer than India which should help,” he added.

Former India cricketer accuses selector Wahab Riaz of ‘favouritism’

Legendary Indian opener Virender Sehwag heavily criticised Pakistan men’s team’s selector Wahab Riaz and accused him of favouritism.

Sehwag’s accusation of Wahab came in the wake of Mohammad Amir’s return to international cricket which eventually saw him representing the national team yet another T20 World Cup.

However, Amir’s comeback did not bring fortune to the Green Shirts as they suffered a group-stage exit for the first time.

Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag was irked by the fact that both Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir, who previously criticised the team on national television, are now part of the setup.

“Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir, these are two names who criticised the Pakistan team on the same TV channel, giving their comments…Today, one of them is a selector [Riaz] and one is in the playing eleven [Amir],” Sehwag said.

“So the same persons who were criticising, if today they have power, became the selector, what have they done first up? ‘Mohammad Amir was with me, let’s select him’. It’s like if Ajit Agarkar is chairman (of BCCI selection committee) today, he will say ‘come Viru, come Zak (Zaheer Khan)’, I will facilitate your comeback,” Sehwag added.

Virender Sehwag then advised Pakistan selectors to focus on the team’s future and also to avoid favouritism.

“You have become a selector, you have to look at the future. You have a job, make the right use of it, don’t do favours. That hard step selectors will have to take,” he concluded.

It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan, the former champions, were knocked out of the group stage of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as a result of gut-wrenching defeats against the co-host United States of America (USA) and arch-rivals India.

The back-to-back defeats put Pakistan on the verge of an early exit and they then needed the USA to lose their remaining matches.

However, the abandonment of a crucial Group A fixture between USA and Ireland marked the end of Pakistan’s journey in T20 World Cup 2024 despite their triumphs over Canada and Ireland.

West Indies batter Brandon King doubtful for remainder of T20 World Cup 2024

West Indies opening batter Brandon King is doubtful for the remainder of the T20 World Cup 2024 due to a side strain, which he suffered during the Super Eight match against England.

King gave his team a quick start with a 13-ball 23, which included three boundaries and a massive 101-metre six off Reece Topley.

However, on his 13th ball, he crumbled after coming down the pitch to hit Sam Curran for a boundary. He received brief medical attention before being forced to retire hurt.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed on social media that the opening batter has suffered a side strain and will not be able to take the field.

“Brandon King has suffered a side strain and will not return to the field of play in this evening’s match,” CWI said.

Shimron Hetmyer replaced the injured batter as a substitute fielder.

Meanwhile, West Indies suffered their first loss in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 as they failed to defend 180 against the defending champions.

England batters Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow played dominant knocks to chase the target with 15 balls to spare.

Salt scored an unbeaten 87 off 47, knitted with seven boundaries and five sixes, meanwhile, Bairstow, who scored the winning runs, amassed 48 runs from 26 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.

West Indies will face the co-hosts United States of America (USA) in their second Super Eight match at Kensington Oval, Barbados on Friday.

Phil Salt powers England to dominant victory over West Indies

SAINT LUCIA: Phil Salt played a scintillating unbeaten knock of 87 runs to power England to a thumping eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the second Super Eights match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here on Wednesday.

Chasing a mammoth 181, Salt and Jonny Bairstow helped England achieve the target with 15 balls to spare.

The defending champions got a fiery start to the chase courtesy of a 67-run opening stand between Salt and skipper Jos Buttler.

Salt, being the chief contributor struck 40 off 24, while Buttler scored 25 off 22 before falling prey to Roston Chase in the eighth over.

Moeen Ali came out to bat but could only score 13 off 10 with two boundaries.

Bairstow then joined Salt and together they ripped apart West Indies’ bowling lineup with an unbeaten 97-run partnership from 44 balls.

England needed 40 off the last five overs, however, Salt completely tilted the game in his team’s favour as he struck 30 runs off Romario Shepherd in the 16th over with three sixes and three fours.

Salt finished his innings with an unbeaten 87 off 47, knitted with seven boundaries and five sixes, meanwhile, Bairstow, who scored the winning runs, amassed 48 runs from 26 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.

After being invited to bat, West Indies opening batter Brandon King gave his side a decent start with a 23-run cameo off 13 balls with the help of three boundaries and one six.

However, King retired hurt in 4.2 overs with 40 runs on board, bringing last match’s hero Nicholas Pooran to the crease.

Pooran joined hands with a settled Johnson Charles, who was playing at 13, and together they added 54 runs for the second wicket partnership.

England bowlers bowled tight lines to keep both batters under check and kept the scoring rate low, which incited Charles to attack Moeen Ali only to get caught by Harry Brook.

Charles top-scored with a 34-ball 38, laced with four boundaries and one six.

West Indies skipper Rovman Powell then smashed five sixes during his entertaining 17-ball knock of 36 runs, including three sixes to Liam Livingstone before getting out while attempting a fourth one.

Pooran fell prey to Jofra Archer in the next over after scoring 36 off 32, featuring four boundaries and one six.

Sherfane Rutherford then scored a quick 28 off 15 with one boundary and two sixes to push his team’s total to 180-4 in their allocated 20 overs.

For England, Archer, Livingstone, Ali and Adil Rashid bagged one wicket each.

Pakistan’s star duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan clung on to the third and fourth spot respectively while India’s Suryakumar Yadav continued his stay at the rankings summit.

However, in a most notable change, Australia’s Marcus Stoinis replaced Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi as the top-ranked all-rounder in T20Is at the back of his all-round exploits in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“Mohammad Nabi’s stay at the top of the ICC Men’s T20I All-rounder Rankings has been short, with some stunning performances boosting Australia’s Marcus Stoinis to the summit,” stated ICC in a press release.

“The world’s new top-ranked all-rounder took six wickets and made three impressive contributions with the bat as Australia cruised through to the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a perfect record.

“His 2/9 helped his side to a hammering of Namibia, but he saved his most important contribution until last in the group stage, hitting an inspired 59 from 29 balls to steer Australia to a win over Scotland that looked a long way off when he came to the crease at 60/3 in the ninth over.

“Wanindu Hasarang and Shakib Al Hasan make up the top three, with Nabi slipping down the rankings but still close behind in fourth.”
