Kyle Mayers replaces injured Brandon King in West Indies T20 World Cup squad

West Indies opening batter Brandon King will miss the rest of the T20 World Cup 2024 after suffering a side strain, meanwhile, fellow opener Kyle Mayers has been named his replacement in the squad.

King suffered the injury while batting in the Super Eight clash against England, which West Indies lost by eight wickets.

The right-handed batter gave his team a quick start with a 13-ball 23, which included three boundaries and a massive 101-metre six off Reece Topley.

However, on his 13th ball, he crumbled after coming down the pitch to hit Sam Curran for a boundary. He received brief medical attention before being forced to retire hurt.

He was replaced by Shimron Hetmyer on the field as a substitute fielder.

After the MRI scans, it was confirmed that King could play no further part in the tournament, after which the ICC Event Technical Committee approved Mayers as his replacement.

“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad,” an ICC release read.

“Mayers, who has played 37 T20Is, was named as a replacement after King was ruled out due to a side strain. Mayers is expected to join the squad on Saturday.”

West Indies crush USA to keep their semi-final hopes alive

BRIDGETOWN: A combined bowling performance followed by Shai Hope’s whirlwind knock of 82 runs to help West Indies thump the United States of America (USA) in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash here on Friday.

Chasing a modest 129-run target, the West Indies showed a dominant performance and achieved the target with 55 balls to spare after losing one wicket.

Hope gave his team a strong start with his attacking approach, while Johnson Charles supported him from the other end, playing an anchor role.

West Indies raised 58 runs in the powerplay with Hope scoring 42 and Charles scoring 15 off 13.

Hope completed his half-century in 26 balls with a six off Harmeet Singh, however, Charles fell in the same over.

Nicholas Pooran joined Hope and West Indies wreaked havoc from both ends as they raised an unbeaten 63-run partnership to lead their side to a thumping win.

With 19 required off 10 overs, Pooran struck Saurabh Netravalkar for two sixes, before Hope finished the game with a six off the fifth ball of the over.

Earlier, Andre Russell drew first blood for West Indies after they opted to bowl first, dismissing Steven Taylor (2) in the second over.

Andries Gous was then joined by Nitish Kumar and together they added 48 runs for the second wicket before Gudakesh Motie struck right after the powerplay.

Roston Chase then dismissed the USA captain Aaron Jones, who scored a run-a-ball 11. The all-rounder then removed Corey Anderson (7) and Harmeet Singh (0) on back-to-back deliveries in the 14th over to leave the USA reeling.

Milind Kumar (19) and Shadley van Schalkwyk (18) showed some resistance against West Indies bowlers to drag the team’s total to 112 before they both fell in the 18th over.

Ali Khan then hit an unbeaten 14 off 6 before Russell picked the final wicket of Saurabh Netravalkar to wrap USA innings at 128 in 19.5 overs.

For West Indies, Russell and Chase returned with figures of 3-31 and 3-19 respectively, while Joseph picked two wickets.

Azhar Mahmood reveals reason behind backing Shadab Khan in T20 World Cup

Pakistan men’s cricket team’s assistant head coach Azhar Mahmood revealed the reason behind backing Shadab Khan despite his struggles during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Speaking to media in Houston, the former all-rounder said that Khan was kept in Pakistan playing XI for all the matches due to the failure of the batting order.

According to Azhar Mahmood, Shadab Khan was a complete player and could not be dropped from the team during the T20 World Cup 2024.

Mahmood was accompanied by senior manager and member selection committee Wahab Riaz who mentioned that the all-rounder was selected in the team based on experience.

Riaz revealed that he had told Usama Mir that there was no place for him in the team for the T20 World Cup 2024.

For the unversed, former champions Pakistan had a disastrous T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they were, in a first, knocked out of the tournament from the group stage.

The Green Shirts had a disapponting start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they suffered a shock loss against the USA in the Super Over.

Pakistan then succumbed to a frustrating six-run defeat against arch-rivals India at a jam-packed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 9.

The back-to-back defeats put Pakistan on the verge of an early exit from the tournament.

The former champions then finally got on the winning track when they registered a hard-fought seven-wicket victory over Canada.

Pakistan then edged past Ireland in another stiff challenge to bow out of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a win.

The 2009 champions finished third in Group A standings with four points in four matches.

South Africa beat holders England in high-scoring thriller

GROS ISLET: Quinton de Kock’s swashbuckling half-century, followed by a combined bowling display led South Africa to beat defending champions England in a high-scoring ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 thriller on Friday.

Chasing a daunting 164-run target, England managed 156/6 in the allotted 20 overs despite Harry Brook’s half-century.

The defending champions had a dismal start to the pursuit as Kagiso Rabada removed in-form Phil Salt (11) in the second over with 15 runs on the board.

Jonny Bairstow, who was promoted to bat at No.3, put together a cautious partnership with skipper Jos Buttler.

Buttler (17) and Bairstow (16) added 38 runs off 30 deliveries before both fell victim to Keshav Maharaj.

England then sustained another blow to their pursuit as Moeen Ali walked back after scoring a mere nine, resulting in them slipping to 61/4 in 10.2 overs.

Following the slump, Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone knitted a fighting partnership and glimmered a ray of hope for England.

The duo added a quickfire 78 runs to the total until Livingstone fell victim to Rabada in the 18th over. He scored 33 off just 17 balls, laced up with three fours and two sixes.

Livingstone’s dismissal dented England’s march towards the total and also the flow of runs. The defending champions then needed 14 runs off the final over.

South Africa had a perfect start to the eventful final over as Anrich Nortje removed England’s batting mainstay Harry Brook on the first delivery.

Brook top-scored for England with a 37-ball 53 with the help of seven boundaries.

England’s bowling all-rounder Sam Curran fought valiantly with an unbeaten 10-run cameo but his efforts went in vain as Nortje held his nerves calm under pressure to steer South Africa to glory.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj bagged two wickets each while Ottneil Baartman and Anrich Nortje struck out a batter apiece.

Sent into bat first, South Africa registered a decent total on the board, courtesy of de Kock’s half-century and David Miller’s late fireworks.

The Proteas had a flying start to their innings with de Kock dominating England bowlers from the word go.

He decimated Jofra Archer in his first over and smashed 21 runs.

Quinton de Kock soon continued his baton charge and brought up his blazing half-century in the seventh over, conceding just 22 deliveries.

He received a lifeline in the ninth when Mark Wood spilt his catch in the deep off Adil Rashid.

But England finally got the much-needed breakthrough in the next over as Moeen Ali dismissed Reeza Hendricks, who found it hard to get going and made a scratchy 19 off 25 deliveries.

South Africa sustained a major blow to their batting expedition when their mainstay Quinton de Kock fell victim to Jofra Archer in the 12th over.

The left-handed batter remained the top scorer for South Africa with 65 off 38 deliveries with the help of four fours and as many sixes.

England bowlers forced comeback with de Kock’s dismissal and troubled new South Africa batters with tight bowling and were rewarded with Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram’s wickets in quick succession.

The back-to-back wickets resulted in South Africa slipping to 113/4 in 14.4 overs.

David Miller then joined force with Tristan Stubbs and bolstered the team’s total with a brisk 42-run stand which lasted with the former’s dismissal on the first delivery of the final over.

Miller remained a notable contributor for South Africa with a 28-ball 43 which featured four fours and two sixes.

South Africa then lost another wicket in the final over of the innings as Marco Jansen perished for a golden duck on the next delivery.

Stubbs, however, remained unbeaten with a cautious 12.

Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for England with three wickets while Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali made one scalp each.

Hat-trick may not spare Pat Cummins from T20 World Cup 2024 chop

Pat Cummins admits that even taking the first hat-trick of the T20 World Cup may not save him from the axe when Australia tackle Afghanistan in their next Super Eights clash.

The veteran fast bowler became just the seventh man to claim a hat-trick in the history of the tournament in the rain-hit win over Bangladesh on Thursday.

However, Saturday’s clash with Afghanistan is taking place on the spin-friendly wicket of Kingstown in St Vincent.

That could mean Cummins, Josh Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc might sit out the game in favour of another slow bowler.

“Yes, potentially. We’ve been pretty open with that, that anyone in the squad’s ready to play and the bowling line-up might change at different times,” said Cummins who has played in three of his team’s five games so far.

“It’s got to be adaptable. We feel like we’ve got all bases covered. So yeah, we’ll rock up there. And I mean, the best thing of all this is I’m not captain or selector or anything, so I just turn up and have no worries.”

Australia played just one frontline fast bowler in the first-round T20 World Cup 2024 win over Scotland with Adam Zampa, Glenn Maxwell as Ashton Agar providing spin options.

In the victory over England, Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood all played just as they did against Bangladesh.

Starc sat out the match against Namibia with Cummins and Hazlewood getting the nod.

Pat Cummins said he had been unaware he was on a hat-trick in the game against Bangladesh.

After removing Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan, his hat-trick ball was the first delivery of his next over when he had Towhid Hridoy caught at fine leg.

“I didn’t know I was on a hat-trick. I did the previous over, I saw it come up on the screen and by the time my next over came around I totally forgot about it,” said Cummins.

“So, I think Marcus Stoinis ran in from the deep, was cheering and I was like, oh yeah, forgot about that. So, yeah, nice one.”

Speaking after winning the toss, England captain Jos Buttler termed the pitch “fresh” and foresees the moisture in it would cause the ball to swing early on.

“Fresh wicket, looks a good pitch, we fancy another chase,” Buttler said.

“Potentially a bit of moisture in the pitch and I’m sure the ball will swing on the breeze,” he added.

South Africa captain Aiden Markram shared that he would have bowled first too but is hopeful to post a big score on the board and “squeeze” England after that.

“Try to put a good score on the board and squeeze them after that,” Markram said.

Pat Cummins joins elusive list with T20 World Cup hat-trick

ANTIGUA: Australia’s right-arm pacer Pat Cummins on Thursday, etched his name in an elusive list of bowlers to claim a hat-trick in an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match.

Cummins achieved the milestone in Australia’s Super Eight bout against Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here.

He claimed two wickets — Mahmudullah (2) and Mahedi Hasan (0) — on the last two deliveries of his third over before striking on the first delivery of his final over, getting rid of Bangladesh’s batting mainstay Towhid Hridoy (40).

Consequently, Pat Cummins became only the second Australian to take a hat-trick in a Men’s T20 World Cup, joining legendary pacer Brett Lee, who achieved the feat in the inaugural edition against the same opposition.

Overall, he joined an illustrious group of just seven players to have taken a hat-trick at a Men’s T20 World Cup.

Players to take a hat-trick in Men’s T20 World Cup

Pat Cummins (Australia) 2024 vs Bangladesh
Josh Little (Ireland) 2022 vs New Zealand
Karthik Meiyappan (UAE) 2022 vs Sri Lanka
Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) 2021 vs England
Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka) 2021 vs South Africa
Curtis Campher (Ireland) 2021 vs Netherlands
Brett Lee (Australia) 2007 vs Bangladesh

Reacting to his hat-trick, Cummins shared that he had no idea until he saw it coming up on the big screen.

“I had no idea (on the hat-trick), then saw when it came up on the screen. Set batter in, playing the innings, you never know how it’ll go about, so that was a big wicket (on Hridoy’s wicket) and happy to have restricted them,” Cummins shared.

The right-arm pacer was elated with Australia’s comfortable victory over Bangladesh in the Super Eight stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and also opened up on the team’s bench strength, which features Nathan Ellis and Ashton Agar.

“Agar and Ellis have been on the bench for us, that shows the depth we have in the bowling unit. Fairly polished performance, the goal was to win and we did well with the run-rate, we’ll need to continue with the momentum going ahead in the Super 8s,” he added.

Mahmudullah bags ‘unwanted’ record for involvement in most hat-tricks

Australian pacer Pat Cummins claimed the first hat-trick of the T20 World Cup 2024 to restrict Bangladesh to 140-8.

He bowled Mahmudullah, who was playing on 2, on the penultimate ball of the 18th over, followed by Mahedi Hasan’s wicket on the next delivery.

The right-handed pacer completed his hat-trick on the first ball of the last over by getting the prized scalp of Bangladesh’s settled batter Towhid Hridoy (40).

Notably, this was Mahmudullah’s third involvement in a hat-trick in T20I cricket, which is the most by any batter in the format.

The hat-trick was spanned across two overs as he dismissed Mahmudullah (2) and Mahedi Hasan (1) on the last two deliveries of the 18th over.

He then got the prized scalp of Bangladesh’s settled batter Towhid Hridoy to claim his first hat-trick in T20I cricket.

Prior to that, Mitchell Starc bowled Tanzid Hasan (0) on the third ball of the innings to draw first blood after Australia opted to field.

However, Litton Das and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto knitted a 58-run stand for the second wicket, with the latter scoring the bulk of runs, to force Bangladesh’s comeback.
