Rahul Dravid to bow out as India coach after T20 World Cup 2024

NEW YORK: Rahul Dravid said on Monday that he will leave his post as head coach of Team India at the end of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after almost three years in charge.

Dravid’s contract runs out at the end of the month and he will not re-apply for the job, which has been advertised by India’s governing cricket body, the BCCI, since last month.

“It is going to be the last one that I am in charge of,” the 51-year-old told reporters ahead of India’s opening match against Ireland in New York on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, the kind of schedules and where I find myself at this stage in my life, I don’t think I’ll be able to re-apply. I love doing the job. I’ve really enjoyed coaching India and I think it’s a truly special job to do.”

The former India captain took over the team from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and West Indies is his last chance to end the country’s global trophy drought, which stretches back to the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Dravid oversaw India’s runs to the finals of both the World Test Championship and their home 50-over World Cup last year, but they came up short against Australia each time.

“I enjoyed working with this team and it’s a great bunch of boys to work with,” Dravid said. “To be very honest, I think we’ve actually played really well in these tournaments.

“The World Test Championship is slightly different in terms of it’s not one tournament but a whole cycle, but playing extremely well in the cycle to get to the final there again.

“The 50-over World Cup we had a great run and went into the final. I think we’ve been right up there with some of the best teams.”

India have not won the T20 World Cup since its inaugural edition in 2007 and they have not lifted the one-day World Cup since 2011.

India is set to face Pakistan on June 9 and the tournament hosts the USA three days later in New York, before concluding their group fixtures against Canada in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 15.

Anrich Nortje defends New York pitch after low-scoring game against Sri Lanka

NEW YORK: Fast bowler Anrich Nortje has defended the drop-in pitch used here for the low-scoring T20 World Cup 2024 match between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Nortje bowled a brilliant spell, returning with figures of 4-7 in his four overs as South Africa booked Sri Lanka for a meagre 77.

In response, South Africa also struggled as they chased the paltry target in 16.2 overs after losing four wickets.

This was the first-ever match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York and the conditions came under criticism due to an uneven pitch and slow outfield.

However, Nortje rejected the assertion that the match was a poor representation of T20 cricket, arguing that not every game needs to feature 20 sixes to be entertaining.

“I thought the game was great,” Nortje said. “It doesn’t always mean, correct me if I’m wrong, there needs to be 20 sixes in a game to make it entertaining.

“There’s still a lot of strategy that goes into the game. There’s a lot of skill that goes into the game, whether it’s sixes or fast bowlers or spinners, however, it might be. So, I thought the game was a brilliant game.

“It was still a close game at the end of the day, another wicket or two, and things might have been different. We might have been in a little bit more trouble.”

The pacer also acknowledged that the pitch was different from what players nowadays are accustomed to.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the wickets,” he said. “It’s [allowed to be] nice for bowlers as well. We are also allowed to get some sort of assistance

“It’s different to what guys have been used to for the last few months or years. There’s a little bit more in the wicket for the bowlers and I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Afghanistan thump Uganda to script triumphant start to T20 World Cup 2024

GUYANA: Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran’s fiery half-centuries, followed by Fazalhaq Farooqi’s five-fer helped Afghanistan thump Uganda by 125 runs in the fifth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Providence Stadium on Monday.

Uganda, playing their first-ever T20 World Cup match, bowled out for a meagre 58 in 16 overs, while chasing 184.

Farooqi picked back-to-back wickets in the first over of the innings but missed the hat-trick as Riazat Ali Shah survived the yorker.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Naveen-ul-Haq also joined the fray, with the latter taking two wickets in the fifth over, reducing Uganda to 21-5 in the powerplay.

Riazat Ali Shah (11) and Robinson Obuya (14) then added 29 runs from 45 balls for the sixth wicket before Farooqi returned to the attack and broke the stand.

Farooqi once again missed the hat-trick after dismissing Brian Misaba on the next ball. However, he added another wicket to his tally in the next over, registering his first five-fer in T20Is.

Afghanistan’s captain wrapped up the innings as he claimed wickets on consecutive balls in the 16th over, earning a massive victory for his side.

Farooqi returned with figures of 5-7, while Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan registered 2-4 and 2-12 respectively.

Earlier, the Afghan openers gave their side a flying start after they were invited to bat first by Uganda, scoring 66 runs in the powerplay.

Gurbaz took Uganda bowlers head-on from the word go and completed his half-century in 28 balls, while Zadran took 34 balls to reach the milestone.

They raised 154 runs for the first wicket before Uganda skipper Brian Masaba removed Zadran in the 15th over.

Zadran scored 70 runs from 46 balls with the help of ten boundaries, including one six.

Gurbaz also fell four balls later as he was caught by Riazat Ali Shah off Alpesh Ramjani after scoring a 45-ball 76, which featured four boundaries and as many sixes.

Uganda bowlers did not allow Afghanistan to make a comeback as they squeezed the run-flow. Afghanistan scored only 27 runs and lost three wickets in the last five overs without any boundary.

Mohammad Nabi remained the only notable scorer after openers with an unbeaten 14 off 16, dragging the team’s total to 183-5 in 20 overs.

For Uganda, Misaba and Cosmas Kyewuta bagged two wickets each.

South Africa crush Sri Lanka to kick off triumphant T20 World Cup campaign

NEW YORK: Anrich Nortje’s ruthless bowling figures of 4/7, followed by a combined batting effort led South Africa to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the fourth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The Proteas had a contrasting start to the run-chase as they lost opener Reeza Hendricks (4) and skipper Aiden Markram (12) early with just 23 runs on the board in 4.2 overs.

Following the early hiccup, Quinton de Kock partnered briefly with Tristan Stubbs, and the duo, combined to add 28 runs for the third wicket before both perished in quick succession.

Stubbs scored a scratchy 13 off 28 deliveries while de Kock made a 27-ball 20 with the the help of a six.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller then put together a sensible batting stand and got South Africa over the line with 22 balls to spare.

Klaasen remained unbeaten with 19 off 22 deliveries while Miller scored a run-a-ball six.

Wanindu Hasaranga bagged two wickets for Sri Lanka while Nuwan Thushara and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva’s decision to bat first against South Africa at a tricky Nassau County International Stadium’s surface did not bear fruits as they were bowled out for a meagre total in 19.1 overs.

The Asian side had a dismal start to their innings as Pathum Nissanka (3) perished cheaply with just 13 runs on the board in 3.1 overs.

Following the early blow, Kamindu Mendis joined Kusal Mendis and the pair looked to anchor the innings with a cautious partnership.

The duo, however, could not pull Sri Lanka out of trouble as Kamindu fell victim to Nortje in the eighth over after scoring a scratchy 11 off 15 deliveries.

Kamindu’s dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse as Sri Lanka lost four more wickets in quick succession including their mainstay Kusal Mendis to eventually slip to 45/6 in 11.2 overs.

All-rounders Dasun Shanaka and Angelo Mathews then offered brief retaliation with a gutsy partnership for the seventh wicket.

They added 23 runs at a brisk rate until Shanaka was cleaned up by Kagiso Rabada in the 15th over.

Mathews followed in his footsteps an over later as he fell victim to ruthless Anrich Nortje after scoring a run-a-ball 16.

Sri Lanka’s batting tail then crumbled against a disciplined South Africa bowling attack and thus the Proteas booked them for a paltry total.

Anrich Nortje led the bowling charge for South Africa with four wickets, followed by Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, who bagged two wickets each.
